If you've been on the Internet for longer than 2 minutes, most likely you've had something that you enjoyed trashed by other random users for a variety of reasons. On the other side of the coin, you've probably had something you personally didn't like proclaimed to be the second seventh coming of Jesus himself.

To bring in some ethical thinking for a second (why yes, I am in an ethics/philosophy class thankyouverymuch), there's a theory that was proposed by William David Ross about intuitionism. To put it in the simplest of simple terms, you basically have various "duties" and you pick the most important of those to you to guide your actions.

To me, it seems like you could apply a similar way of thinking to what you like/dislike. You break it down to various qualities (music, design, story, etc.), decide which ones you find most important and that helps explain more how you feel about it.

Of course, that makes things a LOT more subjective and we can't have that which makes things a lot more interesting. I've enjoyed some bad movies and disliked other good ones because of what I personally find enjoyable. But that means everything can have different enjoyable factors for different things at different times which complicates the matter more.

...

You know what, just calm the f**k down and let others have different opinions. There, I'm done for my weekly reporting. Where's my f**king paycheck

You'll get your paycheck when you put in those subtle advertising nods I paid you for, goddamn it!

And let people have opinions? What sort of liberal hippy are you? When the Injustice League takes over this forum the only opinions allowed will be those pre-approved to fit with League ideology >:)

I'm pretty okay with people not liking what I like. What drives me bonkers is when they like it for different reasons than I do.

Never, because liking different is heretical and you burn the heretics!

I'm okay with people liking things I don't, but people who dislike things I like tend to bring my mood down. It doesn't anger me, but it does sadden me.

I always prefer a positive atmosphere, though. I'd rather be in a room full of people that love something I hate than a room full of people that hate something I love.

Yes, I agree. That's why when people tell me that they (by some ungodly reason) dislike Taco News, I shall tell them that they're objectively wrong to dislike it, because Taco News told me so.

Taco News is always objectively right. And that's a fact, and therefore scientific. And as we all know, Science=Truth, therefore, Taco News=Truth, so do dislike truth, you must be a filthy communist.

I judge people all the time based on all kinds of things: how tall they are, how drunk they are, how pretty they are, what they like, what they don't like, how old they are, etc. You know why? Because that's how humans understand the world. If somebody tells me they like the Kardashians, I will think a little bit poorly of them because I cannot do otherwise. I do it automatically.

What I don't do is sentence them to some sort of punishment for every single judgment I have (this generally includes not telling them every single way I judge them since they don't really need to know and it may hurt their feelings unduly), because that's ridiculous. So, judge away and don't feel bad about it! You literally don't have a choice as long as you are conscious and capable of perception, and it is incredibly shitty to punish somebody for something they have no control over. But please refrain from sentencing people based on your judgments unless it is absolutely necessary. In short, judging and sentencing are very different actions.

Your move, relativism.

You think THAT makes it subjective? Wait until you realise that not only do we order the qualities by subjective importance, but we also go on to decide which ones are better and which are worse on entirely subjective grounds. Let's say I think graphics is #1 and music is #2 in importance. Not only can that completely conflict with your list of importance, I also have a completely different idea about what graphics are good graphics and what music is good music. Which is why my opinion is much better than yours. It's LIKE yours, but with more... me

When things you don't like get attention instead of things you do, it might negatively affect the latter, right down to it ceasing to exist. YOU DIDN'T LIKE LEGACY OF KAIN ENOUGH, YOU MOTHERFUCKERS AND NOW IT'S NO MORE I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU ALL
*takes crazy pills*
Okay, so where was I? Ah yes. Yeah, opinions and all, but there's a reason why this mindset exists.

Did you just say you enjoyed bad movies and disliked good ones?

Stop making no fucking sense!

No! It's subjective! Shut Up!
