I think you shouldn't see it as their responsebilety to educate themself. Rather if one has the knowledge, that person is responsible to educate others where the knowledge of something is lacking. Some things seem elementary to some but are unknown or complex to others.
If you don't like peoples ignorance on a field you carry knowledge (some people enjoy it to lift their egos) you should always struggle to share rather than point out.

Nah, I've learned that, much like "common" sense, "common" knowledge really isn't all that common. So if I mention something I think everybody must know and they look at me blankly, I just change the subject to something else.

[...]I told them to turn off their music, so I could "play something classic." I started playing (Don't Fear) The Reaper and everyone just looked at me. "Who is this?" they asked. "Blue Oyster Clut" I replied. "Who?" At this point I just stared at them, and then I shouted "Educate yo'self!" Then I left, I couldn't bear to sit there anymore.
So you couldn't bear to be with people who didn't know a band that was popular decades before you were even born yourself?

Wow, I imagine you must be quite the popular fellow...
Yeah you sound like a music snob. Granted I understand the point of the thread, but it would be more appropriate to shout EDUCATE YOURSELF with things anyone with a grade 3 education should know.

For example:

The difference between There, their, and they're.

I have heard of the song, and I'm pretty sure it's been playing at places why are was present on multiple occasions, but I wouldn't be able to tell you what it sounds like or even recognise it. I'm also not that into the classic rock scene so that might be why.

As for a situation similar to OP's: Yes I have been in them more than a couple of times, minus the outburst, but including the initial surprise. I'm always surprised when people haven't heard of Depeche Mode, since it was my understanding you were bound to come across them when you're a little familiar with music. But no matter how popular/well known something may be there are always people who are completely surpassed by certain things, or just didn't pay attention when they did hear it.

I mostly avoid those situations now. If people are interested in what I listen to, they'll ask. Until that time comes my headphones stay on.

I despise music "elitists". Your idea of great music is not the be-all and end-all on the subject, and it is not important that people know about it. Your favourite song is not an example of great cultural achievement for your country, it's just a piece of music. That includes classical "elitists" too.

The above is an example of the many, many ways I wish people would educate themselves: the difference between opinion and fact.

yah i always got into debates with this one kid cause i'd correct him for example he once said: "the mustang plane is gay for taking the name of the car." i turnd around and hit him. then explained that the car was named after the plane and didn't come out till the 70's (i think correct me if i'm wrong i had the right year when i told him off) after a 20 min debate my frien who was a ww2 plane buff joined in and after he submitted he said they named the car after the plane cause it was the best in ww1 yah ONE not two one thats what i said. i hit him again and told him the mustang was a ww2 plane and my friend told him he was dead wrong cause it was the spitfire mk9 that was best (really its opinion but i agree [well the mk9{highest kdr} or the hellcat{no shot downs}] i say the mk9 cause it was faster [could compete with the first jets {including a couple postwar ones}). though my fav thing was getting into religious debates everytime i shot down his side (he's hard core christian) he'd reply no your wrong it's true cause it's in the bible ex "me: why are gays bad? him: cause they are! god hates them. Me: Oh i thought god loved ALL his children why would he hate gays he did make them that way after all. him: ....Cause its in the bible." lol (sorry to the religious but suck it up)

So you're saying if a band is more than 10 years older than your date of birth, you shouldn't have heard of them? That's a bit narrow minded and i'm sure you wouldn't say the same thing about other bands.
And it's not narrow minded to expect people to know every song and band you know?
Because that's what it sounds like he's saying...
Not necessarily, but i'd expect most people to have at least a little knowledge of some music from before they were born, either from their parents, radio or wherever. There are just some songs you have to have heard just by living!
Sure, I agree. But which songs they are, that differs for everyone, they probably know some old songs you've never heard of :p
they should atleast know don't fear the reaper. its in Rock band and atleast ONE of those kids should have it though i agree you cant expect them to know every band out there. none of my friends know who ASIA is i laugh at em

Now who needs... how did you prounce it? Edu-ma-cation?

But I've had this scenerio when this guy is obsessed with hugs. So I told him that hugs arn't suitable for everything. He hugged me. I slapped him, then saying "Didn't you hear me?" He buggered off afterwards.

Over the summer, I work at an amusement park, and I've had to explain to my fellow ride operators that a roller coaster doesn't have an engine and, in fact, coasts. I've also had to point out that a wooden roller coaster can't stop just anywhere, since the brakes are attached to the track, and I've had to explain that a full train doesn't go faster than an empty one.

Then you'll have to laugh at me too, I have no idea who they are (though I seem to have heard one of their songs on South Park).
Then again, it's not music my parents like, not my friends so I wouldn't know what the song was if I heard it

I had heard of the song Don't Fear the Reaper, but had never actually listened to it. Currently listening to it on YouTube though, it's a good song.
