I was at Gamestop yesterday and saw that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was $12 used, so I finally decided to buy it.

The only reason I bought it was because of how cool Skyrim looks, and I don't want to be left out of that excitement.

Now given that the game is going to be 4 years old this year, will the experience at all be tarnished by playing more advanced titles like Fallout 3 and New Vegas?

I played it for about 5 minutes yesterday and was overwhelmed at the amount of information there was to take in. I felt so lost. But I am sure I will pick it up.

Is this game worth playing now? Or should I just wait for Skyrim and play that? Is there continuity?

For $12, I know I can't go wrong, but I still want to know if it is actually worth playing.

To be honest, Oblivion IS overwhelming, particularly once you've left prison.

I tried playing it several times before I actually made it through to the end. Give it time, and check out the guilds for spiffing quests.

Its a very good game, but there is no continuity between it and Skyrim.

Just take it one bit at a time, and you'll be fine, there is a wealth of stuff to do in it so you can feel overwhelmed, but just follow the compass bearings and do a few quests and you'll get the hang of it... as for where to start, my advice would be to leave the city alone and do quests in a few small villages first less realms of info and more gameplay.

It sure is worth 12$.
its a bit buggy and it doesn't live up to modern standards, but it has been a milestone in gaming just like any other TES game.

I know it's an awesome game, but what I am saying, with the 100+ hours playing time, is it worth it to play it now, or just wait for Skyrim? Is the continuity from IV to V relevant?

Seeing as how I don't know the story of Oblivion yet, I thought I would ask for a yes/no answer.

I would also ignore the first post, as he is trolling.

The game is absolutely fantastic and the first 3 times I started the game I felt exactly like you. In fact that is exactly why I restarted the game and I am pretty sure the forth time I got it right. The game definitely takes some getting used to, and a lot more information that the non-elder scrolls player might have. I would recommend looking online for guides and suggestions on character builds just so you have a greater understanding on how the leveling works. This is extremely important, bc overskilling a stat MAY be detrimental. Hope this helped.

5 years old in march I think.

Yeah, it's good. Might want to mod it.

Skyrim won't require you to have played Oblivion.

Oh I'd say it is really worth it.
Start out in some of the towns until you get the hang of it.

Not too sure how relevant it is going to be in the scheme of things. In Oblivion there were references to elder scrolls 3, but nothing shattering, and if you didn't play the game let them go right over your head.

The game is still fantastic on its own merits and I think should be given another try.

Also, are there any hints on how to persuade people? All I did last night is piss people off.

And Thoromir (?) I had no clue of how to get him to spill the beans about his stolen stock!

Meh. I found it to be deep, but hard to get into.

If you like a huge-world, some interesting quests, and creepy facial-animations, it was worth the $12.

Those are massive helpful if you plan on going bigshot and wanting to OCD freakout when you realize how much you can play with

Also:
1. On the 360 its beast as you can get all the DLC -even the rare and POWAFEL Horse Armor)

2. Also the coolest house "Fighter's Stronghold"

Oblivion -> Skyrim is 200years

Suppose you can roleplay as the Grandfather or such to the next Hero of Skyrim (as in I play a Nord...so I call it fair)

If that's the dude I think it is, you follow him at night to meet some dude. Or you wait til he's not looking and steal a log book.

OT: It is definitely worthwhile. It would also be worthwhile to get the shivering isles expansion when you get to a higher level.

I...don't...how is he trolling? Because he doesn't like a game that you liked?

Yeah, persuasion sucks. I've very rarely actually used it successfully, get used to paying people and using spells to make them like you.

Anyway, overall, Oblivion is great, you definitely should play it. There will probably be very little actual continuity, but I've picked up some stuff from trailers that will be easier to understand if you've played Oblivion (like what the hell a "dragonborn" is).

Well I felt that it lost some of it's appeal after I played fallout. When I got around to play it it wasn't as good as I remembered and I was annoyed by some of the features that it lacks compared to fallout. It's still good though.

I was talking about this (first post response to thread), and he did like the game, bu this first line is a little alienating.

SmashLovesTitanQuest: No offense, but why the fuck did you even make this thread.

That's exactly what I am talking about.

But I'm guessing by a lot of the responses for immersion alone, I should be fine.

Thanks a lot guys!

$12? More than worth $12, in terms of content.

I don't feel like making a detailed post on Character Creation...Just make sure you do the Dark Brotherhood questline. :)

AND READ THE MANUAL.

Wait, some DLC is not available for the PS3? The GOTY edition was $40. Does that come with all DLC?
