End of Metal Gear 3,(and 4)
Shooting the Boss made me *really* cry, and the ending of 4 "Where's snake" at Meryls wedding and then epilogue with Big Boss

Also Ico, and the Shadow of Colossus, just the entire games were emotionally engaging, that's part of their magic.

Ending of Half-life 2 Ep 2. Halo 3 too...
Bioshock not the ending, but when you confront Ryan.

Also the end of Red Dead Redemption, is amazing...

So I just finished Red Dead Redemption. I don't want to ruin it for the people who haven't finished it yet, but I actually found myself very emotionally invested in what was going on. I didn't think I would feel that way, truth be told: RDR is an amazing game, for sure, but I didn't feel involved in the story to any great extent. I was taking part in the story, playing as Marston, but I didn't feel like I was invested in what was going on.

Then the ending came along and kicked me in the teeth. Honestly, I felt a little betrayed by the end of the final cutscene. I'm assuming that's what they were shooting for, but still. It was an emotional voyage for me.

I've encountered a few other games where I've been emotionally invested in what's going on. Shadow of the Colossus is a great example of that, as is Beyond Good & Evil, or the Brothers in Arms series (Road to Hill 30 and Hell's Highway, in particular). Even the ending of Half-Life 2: Episode Two had me near tears. There are a few others as well.

So the question is as follows: have there ever been any games that you've been really emotionally engaged in? If so, what are they?

(Search bar provided a topic from a year ago, but I figured a newer one wouldn't hurt.)
Did you play the stranger mission in Blackwater after?

Planescape: Torment was very emotional in multiple places, especially the whole ending section. Absolutely brilliant, just brilliant.
What can change the nature of a man?

For me im either going with Baldurs Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal.

You spend the majority of the game believing Yuna is the one who has an inevitable doomed fate and is willing to cede her life for Spira. The cliche would seem her being rescued and not having to summon the final aeon however the plot does an excellent job in gradually revealing Tidus will be the one to sacrifice himself for Yuna. Her running through him as he begins to disappear and their subsequent embrace was absolutely beautiful. Tragedy done masterfully.

For the life of me I can't remember the name, but I had a horror game once for the Xbox. It was set in an American high school and was kind of party based; you would select a character and a partner (it could be 2 player if you had a friend, AI controlled if not) and leave the rest of the characters at "base" while you went out and followed the plot. If anybody can remember the name please post it...
It's probably this one Obscure [http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/obscure/index.html]
Yep, that's the one. Cheers.

So, yeah, basically you got the least impressive endings.
Although I do see why you would be frustrated at the reveal but I actually thought it made sense in the main picture and was a pretty well-played twist with a lot of awesomely subtle hints.
Youtube the worst endings for Ethan.
Note to OP: Apologies if this is derailing your thread. Just say the word, and I'll shut my yapper.

This intrigues me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. The one part I hated about the epilogue is that Ethan got back to his sickening happy-go-lucky dad-of-the-year routine. It annoyed me in the prologue, it annoyed me in the ending. So if he gets an ending that sucks, good! I dislike that guy.

And I do agree. Watched from one angle, there are a few very nice subtle hints at the Origami Killer's identity. However, it also requires that you overlook a few things. I'll spell them out here, since we're getting into more detail.
*The game claims he's 48 years old in a news report in the epilogue. This is wildly inaccurate. Scott's year of birth is 1967, same as his twin brother John. This makes him 44 years old in the game's events.
*No way Scott Shelby looks anywhere near 44 years old. The designers have purposefully made him look at least 55, if not 60, simply because if he looked 43, he'd be in the running as a candidate for murderer.
*If we believe the news report claim that he is 48, that would make him four years older than his brother. Let's assume for a minute that the "twin" thing is just a misunderstanding for Madison, and a sentimental thing for Scott. That makes him 14 in the flashback cutscenes. No way is that a fourteen year old kid, based both on appearance and how they act. I'm forced to conclude they lie about his age in the latter news report to somehow make it more consistent with Scott's in-game appearance.
*The Butterfly test. Obviously, it's been arranged by someone at least as athletic as Ethan, or it'd be impossible to get all that broken glass through the tunnel. Scott Shelby is overweight, an asmathic, and wouldn't stand a chance to arrange this test.
*The sheer funds necessary to arrange all these tests for Ethan are never addressed. Sure, we could speculate on how Scott, on the meager pension of a retired police officer, can afford all this stuff. But I don't think we should have to; it doesn't make sense, so it should've been explained.
*Whenever you actually see the Origami Killer on-screen before the reveal, it takes a huge leap of faith to believe that's actually Scott. While the Origami Killer has a slightly stocky frame, he's certainly not overweight by any means of the word. Scott is. Besides, Scott's asthma, which the game designers use heavily at the start of the game to provoke sympathy, seems like a problem in the situations he gets into.
*I swear that Kid Scott has been designed to look as much as a child version of Lt. Blake as humanly possible. Take a look at that kid and tell me he doesn't look like him, I dare you!

I could list for a while more, but I don't think I will. Overall, the whole reveal with Scott is both dishonest and full of plot holes, which made me go "ah-wuuuu?" when it was revealed. It's sad, because they wouldn't have had to do a -lot- of changes to fix this. Let us know his age early on, in a subtle way. Make Scott a little less overweight. Give us an impression that he's living comfortably in private, or at least some idea that he has more money than you'd expect him to. All that'd be a start. Cause, the thing is, you're right. In some ways, they -are- absolutely brilliant. They wouldn't have had the need to resort to petty misdirection like this, because the mystery would stand on its own. I'm pretty sure 95% of the people playing the game wouldn't want it to be Scott, and would leap to accuse Blake.

With all that said, I did enjoy the game. It just annoys me that the big reveal wasn't pulled off as well as the game deserved. In my humble opinion, of course.
1. Imo, most of the complaints are negated if we just assume that the news report is a fuck-up. That's it, either they've implied that the newscaster made a mistake or they themselves weren't too attentive.
2. The Butterfly test - Scott Shelby might be overweight and asthma and all, but lookie at him - the guy can really fight and, during the course of the game, kicks more ass than many of the regular action stars do in their movies.
The guy is in pretty good physical shape and, as for asthma, it doesn't make you completely useless, now, does it (a bit asthmatic myself).
3. The overweight part - well, there are belts to reduce that. Just saying.
4. Lt. Blake - I really can't believe anyone would frame the guy. He is reluctant to catch the killer, sure, he is an unbalanced psychopathic asshole, sure, but he doesn't really fit. Besides, when the game goes all like "It's Blake! Go frame him", it's extremely obvious he's not the killer.
5. Ethan Mars was actually my favorite character in the whole game, so the bad endings for him were incredibly painful to watch.
Also, subsribe to MY newsletter? What did you mean by that.

I liked Mafia, but the driving mechanics threw me right off, and I couldn't really get back in the game. Pity. Those cars steer like shopping trolleys, which is realistic for the time period, but I just wish there'd been less driving. It was really infuriating me.

Ratchett and Clack - Crack In Time. I'm a sucker for the "Best Friends Forever" style ending. Also, I had so much fun playing the game I was just sad it was over.

Stalker Call of Pripyat actually made me feel rather bad on my first ending. See, I din't do the quest to get rid of the Bloodsucker lair, or defeat the Chimera (the one Tracker gives you), and I didn't do everything for the mechanic in the Skadovsk so what happened in the ending was that
the Skadovsk got really popular, but then the Bloodsuckers attacked and killed everyone in there. Tracker was killed hunting the Chimera, and the mechanic (who had left before the attack) went searching for his dead friend, never found him, and ended up dead in the Bloodsucker attack.
Started the game again straight away to make that right.

Dragon Age: Origins. The part where all your squad mates start talking to you and getting psyched up got me emotional. Plus ofcourse the actual ending. Great characters and story.

Mass Effect. Awesome ending, FUCK YEAH EXPLOSIONS. OSHI-. Then a yay!

Final Fantasy X - Sad and very emotional, one of the first games to get an emotional response out of me.

And ofcourse, Red Dead Redemption.

FFVIII defo'defo'defo. Uhm, FFIX too I guess. Probably other Final Fantasies that I have yet to complete. Final Fantasy games are the only endings I found emotional, really.

Mass effect 1 and 2.

RDR

So when it initially happens I was really sad. Almost feeling betrayed by rockstar for it. Then I started the remember my family quest.

Upon arriving at the lake I hog tied and dumped his wife into a lake.
Spread his brother's brains across the land of mexico.
Then finally let him float downstream.

Ross had cost me a family and now the debt had been repaid.

So many times throughout that game I was like. "Cause I'm a fucking cowboy!". The ending wrapped that up nicely.

I was kinda bummed at the end of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Also, April Ryan's demise

I found the ending of Syberia 2 to be very heart wrenching for some reason.
