Mayans never claimed that they knew the end of the world.

Experts confirm that no where in the Mayan Calender does it say anything about the end of the world. There's a huge crack on the stone tablet that makes the end of the calendar illegible. The section of the stone where it apparently says the end of the world is December 21, 2012 (which isn't even the end of the calender) is actually just the end of a Solar Era and the start of a new one. Internet rumors and dumb people just spurred on that it was the end of the world, just like they did with Y2K and June 6th, 2006. My family is of Mayan descent and were utterly insulted when people accused my ancestors of being dumb "lizard people" that were crazy. (I was reading the comments on the news report and someone called my people Lizard people which has no connection to the Mayans).

heh, I almost forgot about that Mayan apocalypse thing. Even if they did claim that the world will end in a few weeks, who cares (no disrespect to your family; just saying lots of different cultures and religions have their own stuff about the end of the world)

Thats the thing, they never claimed that they knew when the world was ending.

Technically it'd be a year plus a few weeks ;)
To be honest ever since these rumours about 2012 being the end of the world started circulating I've just thought they were mostly grounded in the film.

Isn't there a Mayan Calender that goes on to 2040 or some such anyways?

Also, it's not going to stop people going "DA WORLD GUNNA END!" they've been doing it for years now after all, Y2K ftw.

We can't possibly know, the crack on the tablet makes it unreadable

Anyone else notice how the 2012 end of the world theory doesn't seem like it'll actually last long enough to reach its own proposed doomsday? I mean, I've heard almost nothing about these days, but it was really popular a year or so ago. If the world really does end in December 2012, I don't think most of us will actually remember to be prepared for it.

Confirmation of what I already knew. Anyway, nothing is going to happen that day. I love watching people panic because of the coming "apocalypse" and making fun of them.

Yep.

And the sad thing is, some morons will actually believe it and do something very stupid. Pretty sure a few people topped themselves in May because that crazy old man predicted the Rapture or whatever.

Yeaaaaah, already knew this. But even if I didn't, I don't think I'd care much anyway.

The end of the world gets predicted every few years. The world ain't going to end, dammit. (Well, it will eventually, but nothing supernatural is going to cause it.)

I think people just like the idea of being among the last humans to ever live. Little bit creepy.

Bah. Everyone knows that the world is going to end in 2038 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem].

I thought it's supposed to end in 2050? I can't keep track anymore. Every generation loves to believe that they'll be the last.

I share this guys view, but it's just as likely to be a load of bunkum as all the others.

Carl Johan Calleman

"My own view is that this is the last chance that human beings will have to truly align themselves with the cosmic plan. It is now or never and if you do not think that the Conscious Convergence has something to do with you you probably have not studied the Mayan calendar seriously enough. Hence, there can be no proxies for your participation in the transformation of the world as the calendar comes to an end."

I'm pretty sure that everyone just started making up a bunch of bullshit facts after learning that the calendar supposedly stopped there. Which is why I laugh in someone's face when they start trying to convince me that something's going to happen. Which is why I am also going to go laugh in my friend's faces at the end of the day and present this new development.

Think of this as a potential world ending which has been averted by the intervention of brave heroes.

Could have ended with the comet Hale-Bopp in 1997 but a bunch of cultists sacrificed themselves. Could have ended in early 2010 with the Fall incurred by the arrival of Nyx on Earth. Shit was averted. Could still end in 2012, because even though someone went back in time and changed the Mayan prediction, there is still Izanami's television world plot to worry about, and that's even earlier, April 2012.
