The ending to Ass 2.

Seriously, that ending suuuucks.
Not only did it suck, but it barely made any sense and the boss fight was the equivalent to a bar-room brawl with a fat guy.
A drunk fat guy in his 80s.

I don't care how awesome it sounds in theory, if it's not fun, then it's not awesome.
I think suitably epic music would've contributed to it greatly.

*Speaking with Morgan Freeman's narrator voice*

But just as Marter had said it, everything around him began to fade away. He did not know what happened, nor how to react. He simply stood there as the world around him disappeared.

Until suddenly, he woke up in his bed, dripping in sweat. The Escapist.. had all been a dream.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

That means, all that time spent, all that effort wasted, all didn't happen.

...

Wait, that's good.

I have my freedom back! This is the beginning of a new life for me! No more wasted night posting on The Escapist!
Suddenly, Marter woke up. Hubilub's comment... had all been a dream
Well played.

I should stop waking up. Living in a dream world is easier. Although, maybe it's all a dream...

That's an interesting point. I've seen many people complain about that kind of ending, yet I can't personally think of anywhere where this ending deployed.

Well, except St. Elsewhere, but that was more a giant mindfuck than anything else.

The scene after the God of War 3 credits.

So he finally kills all the gods, and kills himself since he's finally succeeded in his mission and wants peace, and to finally do some good to try and atone for all the evils he did. But after the credits it shows a blood trail, most likely Kratos's, which means he lived on. Completely negating the whole killing himself for the greater good thing and denying him his peace.

You could say he just jumped off the mountain, as a nod to the first game, but why didn't it show it? That would have been a far better ending scene. Instead its highly possibly that they used that as a jumping off point for more sequels.

Just fills me with so much god damn rage.

Super Mario Bros. 2 had it.

Eternal Sonata. Although that isn't a plot twist, it's established from the very beginning that it's Chopin's final dream.

Although I still rank it because the premise of having a game set in my favorite composers final dream sounds fucking awesome, but was executed so damn poorly.

Any movie in which they spend the entire film looking for something, only to find out they had it inside them all along. Like The Wizard Of Oz or Transformers 2 (the latter of which I consider to be the worst film I have ever seen)

There is only one movie in which I have wanted to see that ending, and that film is Finding Nemo

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

"Hey! Thanks for saving all of our whiny asses so we could have our retarded little festival. We know you went through a lot. Solving puzzles, getting your butt kicked repeatedly. Solving a lot of people's problems and all. But... um.... you're not invited. In fact, if you were to stick around, it would really kinda ruin the whole thing, so.... gtfo.

Death note.
Awesome hero. gets killed. by total looser. and little kid with doll obsession. Series should have ended the episode before, with the sound of Near keeling over as Light reached zero.

I know I'll probably get some flack for this but the Legendary ending of Halo 3.

honestly I would have much rather had the Chief die in some glorious manner then float through space and leave the possibility of Halo 4 open if he lands on that planet that he is floating towards...seriously, story closure is a good thing, and a hero's death would have been fitting. I mean honestly, just because you kill the Chief doesn't mean you can't continue to make Halo games, there is plenty of canon out there for them to explore

I always thought that that was such a cliché that it's never actually ever been done.

OT: Assassin's Creed, mainly because I wasn't sure if it had ended or not. Loved the ending to the second game though (apparently I'm the only one who understood the stuff with Minerva), a great cliff-hanger leading into the third game that still provides a satisfying (albeit sad) ending to Ezio's adventures - at least until Bloodlines.

Border-fucking-lands.
I was quite excited to play out an epic adventure with my mates... And it was fun. Until it got to the end and the game spit in my face and refused to give practically no closure what so ever.
