It's probably just for the good looking in game map, but fingers crossed for DLC. and why is vvardenfell there? red mountain blew up when that flying stone in vivec crashed into the island and caused red mountain to go nuclear.

Hammerfell is pretty much the same size as Skyrim:
It's just that the scale is all over the place. If we are to believe Daggerfall, that Iliac Bay area between Hammerfell and High rock should be about half a million square kilometers. And in Oblivion for example, the whole Cyrodiil is (if I remember correctly) about 25 square kilometers. (I don't know how big Skyrim is.) And based on Arena, the whole Tamriel should be 6 million km[sup]2[/sup].
So Arena and Daggerfall fit together just fine. The rest, not so much.

I know, it's not really important. It's just that these kind of details tend to bother me a lot more than they should.

Anyway, I can't really think of what they'd do with that. I mean, all of the areas around Skyrim have been covered in previous TES games (though only a part of High rock and Hammerfell, if you don't count Arena). Who knows. I'm sure there's going to be mods though.
The scales used for the different games were quite different, that's true. Arena and Daggerfall are comparable with one another, as are Morrowind (25 sq km) and Oblivion (40 sq km), but as these four games were made using two different scales they do not compare between these two groups.

I reckon (and this is pure speculation) that we're gonna see more of the Aldmeri Dominion in future DLCs. One of the more interesting books I've read in Skyrim covered the history of the Empire vs Thalmor war since the beginning of the Fourth Era, and I was surprised how much the political geography of Tamriel has changed. The 'Empire' now consists only of High Rock, Skyrim and Cyrodiil. Hammerfel and Black Marsh are independent nations, and Morrowind has simply collapsed after the Red Mountain crisis and is unable to function as either a member state or independently. Valenwood and Elswyr (which is now the twin principalities of Anequina and Pelletine) both belong to the Aldmeri Dominion.

I'd be interested to see not only how this conflict works out, but also to see a Thalmor run district operates. Valenwood, for example, was subjugated. Elswyr, on the other hand, willingly ceded to the Dominion. I'd like to see these Thalmor principalities in future DLCs.

I'm guessing hammerfell and high rock are more likely DLC candidates. They're smaller and somewhat self-contained.

I'd buy "adventure packs" in a heartbeat - new regions full of people, side quests/extensions of guild storylines, and no main plot threads. Maybe with new economy factors like trade or real farming being made available. Somehow, though, I expect we'll just see more "mini stories" as DLC instead.

Interesting I feel mods coming on. If they were testing areas and aren't used in upcoming DLC (which I think they may be because they said they were just gonna do BIG dlc no horse armor) then mods will make them accessible and populated.

Hopefully it is for DLC, it would be badass to visit (a small part of) Morrowind again and it would be a cool callback to how Skyrim was a small part of Elder Scrolls 3 with the Bloodmoon expansion.

But I think the extra landmasses is just for having "something" in the distant landscape, instead of a water texture or the like.
I gotta go check how much of this can actually be seen from the intended playable parts of the map.

Just yesterday I was thinking how incredibly awesome it would be if, just like what happened in Pokemon Gold and Siver, when you finished the main plot of Skyrim a whole different province opened up for you to play in.

Imagine how excited I was when I saw this thread.

And wasn't it only the island of Vvardenfel that got obliterated when Red Mountain went nuclear?
Now wait a minute, I don't remember anything happening to Red Mountain like that. I remember beating Dagoth-Ur and the blight cleared up. When did it blow up?
From the official lore:

4E 22 - Red Mountain erupts; Vvardenfell is destroyed.
In Vivec's absence, the Ministry of Truth becomes unstable. Vuhon creates an Ingenium that uses at first dozens of dying souls, then a small number of living ones to stabilize the rock. The soul of Sul's wife Ilzheven was among them. In a fight to free her, the Ingenium is destroyed and the rock crashes into the city of Vivec with all the energy it originally had. The impact causes Red Mountain to erupt and destroys the entire island of Vvardenfell, as well as causing massive destruction to the rest of the province.

Yeah, Vvardenfell done got screwed.
So it's a desolate wasteland with few survivors? I think I know Bethesda's next title:

That's odd... There shouldn't be anything left of Morrowind at all...
Morrowind isnt gone
c The Ministry Of Truth(A asteroid, held aloft by magic) Fell onto the capital of Vivic city in Vvardenfell causeing the eruption of red mountain covering Vvardenfell in ash and lava for over a year. The Nords and Orc invaded from the north (Prolly from Solshteim may not have been the Skyrim nords)Then vengful Argonians invaded the rest of morrowind considereing the argonians were the staple of Morrowinds slave trade if i were a Dunmer i would want out too.
For more info.

I just assumed the whole area became uninhabitable after the Red Year, and even more after the Argonians came along and got their revenge at last.

And I meant that jokingly, seeing as Daggerfall's total map area is "twice the size of Great Britain" while Cyrodil is a couple of hours' drive across and say, Vvardenfell is a good day's camping/hiking trip from one side to the other...

Morrowind DLC for Skyrim. I think the sheer amount of awesome would red ring my Xbox instantly if ever such an event was to pass.

I'm 90% sure it's there so that you don't just see a big whole when you get to the border, and so we all squee when we see Lake Rumare.

Perhaps they will make it so you can travel from one area to the next by simply inserting the relevant disc... ie Oblivion is already complete and would only need updating to bring it to the same timeline as the Skyrim story.

Actually it's not all of Tamriel. A good chunk, but not the whole thing. The reason why, is so when you're on a tall mountain on a clear day, you don't see a big hole, or endless, totally inaccurate bodies of water. If you look towards Cyrodiil, you should be able to see it in the distance. And that's what they did.

I'm gonna have to agree that it's probably just scenery. Bethesda seems to enjoy creating new content, not back tracking and recycling ideas...which I personally appreciate. I came across that gate to Morrowind as well, and it reminded me of the gate in New Vegas at the NCR base in the SW part of the map. I guessed that it would lead to a DLC area later that would most likely lead to California and territories from Fallout 2. BUT as we all know, that never happened. I doubt we'll return to old areas of TES and Fallout for a while. I do however think that High Rock could be possible. As much as I'd like to see the entire world of TES off of the Skyrim engine, and think the province of Skyrim, in it's present state, is already massive and complete, I doubt we'll see Cyrodil or Morrowind. However, it's hard to imagine what the expansion content could be within the Skyrim territories. That's why I put my money of High Rock, simply because it's close, and we haven't been there yet. It's also a good sized chunk of land that would be similar in appearance to Skyrim. All you cheaters should start looking to the NW to see if anything is there.

Perhaps the next DLC is a sort of liberation of Elsweyr? From my point of view many people are willing to go there, the only other option I keep seeing is Hammerfell. If the Aldmeri Dominion truly does have a hold on Eslweyr, then perhaps thats where we go next.
