A happy, retarded dumb place (although I'm not saying it isn't already ;o).
Proportion, please. Console warz aren't even remotely close to debating the Enlightenment... far more often than not they're silly exercises in blind partisanship that the Internet would frankly be better without, the equivalent of "Enterprise vs. Star Destroyer" slapfights.

All I'm saying is that the medium isn't as important as the content, and if we stopped obsessing over brand-name boosterism we might actually get some real discussion going.

I hate people like you.
So do all normal people. And by normal people I mean non-douchebags. This tread is about console wars, not console vs. pc. Why don't PC-bots like you wait until a thread comes along that actually involves you?

PS3 and 360 are more or less the same.
(yes the PS3 has more power but it doesnt show so wtf?)

BUT the 360 is mucho cheaper.

If I wasn't a PC gamer I would buy a 360 (although I despise MS).
Buying a PS3 is an irrational move right now imo.

As to whether I'm exaggerating the problems or not, I honestly don't think so; I think a lot of PC partisans are blind to the little things that really are obstacles for people who aren't as technically inclined.
Perhaps, but I think you're either underestimating the technical knowledge of the kids on this forum or I'm overestimating that.
Aha; I see part of the source of our disagreement. I wasn't restricting my commentary to members of this forum but to the game market in general. I think that folks here are more computer literate than the general population as the Escapist tends to draw a more sophisticated gaming audience.

Myself, I went with my Xbox 360 over a new gaming rig for two primary reasons:

  • [li] My current desktop is ancient and already upgraded as far as it can go except maybe to squeeze another gig of RAM in; I'd have to buy an entirely new computer (and probably a new monitor) if I wanted to play current-generation games. It was cheaper and easier to just get an Xbox that could talk to my existing HDTV.[/li]
[li] There weren't any titles I was hankering for that weren't available on the Xbox 360, and a few I was that were available on 360 only, at the time I upgraded. Later a few of those titles did go cross-platform, but only one PC title tempts me at the moment so I'm satisfied.[/li]
The other benefits I mentioned are just perks, and sops to my laziness, for me... but they are concerns mentioned to me by people who don't eat, sleep, and play PCs.

As for keeping discs, I'm old-school enough that I prefer a hard copy even for my PC titles and tend to buy retail anyway. If anything, keeping console discs is easier than my PC discs... console discs are in standard-sized DVD cases that slot in right next to my videos whereas my PC games come in either jewel cases (which are fine) or weird-sized boxes to contain all the manuals and stuff.

And none of that is Sony's fault, it's the developers fault for not including voice chat and not being able to keep a good FPS on their game.
Actually thats only half true. It is Sony's fault really. The developers may be too lazy to put in these things for PS3 games and they can get away with it because Sony doesn't require it. Microsoft does. All games released on the 360 HAVE to have achievement support, voice chat for multiplayer, etc. All those bells and whistles that Xbox players take for granted and complain about the PS3 not having, Microsoft DEMANDS that they be in the games, while Sony does not. It's something that Sony should really change. Not everybody cares about it, but the majority of players would prefer it be available.
Though the funny thing is, people on LIVE always complain about the little bastards that scream in the mics yet they complain that the PS3 doesn't come with one because I would assure you the same thing would happen.

But I personally don't care to much for Mic support because A)All the games I have have Mic support and have yet to find a game that doesn't and B)I use it only to talk to friends.

Personally I find the community on PSN a bit homely and nice, not to many people scream "You suck!" or the like (though people do use the voice changer and it gets annoying). Most people communicate mutually in games especially in team based game like Metal Gear: Online. If I do use a Mic then it enhances the experience alot, but when I used LIVE and used a Mic it seemed pointless because everyone was just pissing on everyone else.

But I do see what you're saying, however I don't think it would change much if they required (could you prove this? just asking) Mic support or gave one out of the box (which would most likely be a hunk of plastic crap), and you can use any Bluetooth headset you have lying around so you don't have to buy a new one.

I think I may know why that's true. It boils down to two factors: 1.) Most kids under 13 own either a Wii or 360 due to the PS3's high price, as evidenced by the amount of them online. 2.) The popular 360 games with online play tend to be fast-paced shooters, raising everyone's adrenaline and testosterone levels, making them more aggressive. Aside from the Resistance games, I don't see any other games like that on the PS3.

I consider myself to be a half-fanboy. While I'm open to playing on other consoles (and I do enjoy games like Grand Theft Auto and Halo's multiplayer), I find myself preferring Nintendo consoles over the others. It could be Nintendo's proven track record, or it could be that I've been playing Nintendo consoles since the day I could hold a controller, but my love with Nintendo over the other first-party companies will never change.

Silly old fanboys.
I own a 360 and I used to own a PS2 (However my brother decided to try and 'fix' the disk tray when it didn't open except for at a certain angle) - However, I'm more of a PC gamer, and I don't really see the point in being almost literally conscripted into a never-ending battle between three factions full of social rejects.
I mean, you'd buy a games console to have fun, wouldn't you? Not to argue with people who prefer a different pile of metal and plastic over why your pile of metal and plastic over which is better.

i am a self-admitting PS3 fanboy, and i hope i can represent the majority of fanboys (although probably not) in expressing our point of view in a mature, understandable way (instead of "YEAH BOI PS3 RULEZ XBOX AND WII SUCKS YEAH BOI BOI")

for me, i went for the PS3 because of power, games, graphics etc etc, but the 360 also has this, and i knew i wouldn't get it before i even knew its specs etc, because of my biased opinion against Microsoft (sorry but each time i think of the company i think "money grabbing bastards making unreliable software and monopolising the market until the lone hero Apple comes along and goes into a pitched battle in the fires of mount-Vista, ipod as sword and ibook as shield..." sorry im getting sidetracked Yahtzee style lol) i very nearly got a Wii, and now realise that i made the right choice of getting a PS3 sicne their recent abandonment of the hardcore market, and the reducement of the Wiimote to a simple gimick.

also, the console wars in general tend to be rather enjoyable for me... makes me feel like a loyal soldier, fighting a great big battle against other fanboy-warriors... and each arguement i win against a 360 fanboy is my Sixaxis plunging into their RRoD'd throats... so basically i like to entertain myself with the console by usng the imagination, (its sad, i know, but hey, im a fanboy, it was written in the job discription) maybe other fanboys are the same?

i pick stupid things like company loyalty cause its fun, it makes me feel like im pledging allegiance myself to one massive faction, and that im part of that massive faction fighting other massive factions, all exciting and stuff... bit like a real war, except without the horrible horrible deaths, orphaned children, massive amounts of poverty, chaos, moraly questionable political actions etc etc.

i realise that there is a necessity to summarise all that i have just said, so here it is, simply put:

i am a fanboy because i enjoy arguing against others, pitting my best points about PS3 and worse points about 360, and vice versa: when i can have a well executed argument with a SMART fanboy, its enjoyable.

so yes, go PS3! woooh! XD

Don't take this as an attack but microsoft has monopolised the market because Apple make things too expensive and refuse to support gaming, low end market segments or custom building.
I have heard that USA is cheaper but the Mac book air costs £1100 in the UK and I'm sorry but that is just rip off when an ASUS Eee pc can be picked up for a 1/3 of the price which has VGA, three USB, Ethernet and a memory card reader and a choice of Xp or Linux.

First off, if you like the PS3, thats fine I have no problem with that. That said, don't think I'm attacking you when I say this.
A) Sony is just as much of a monolithic, money-grubbing, soul-less company as MS. And Apple. And all the rest. Some hide it better than other, but they're all business' and are run by business men.
B)You spent all that money on a PS3 just because you like to argue? Seriously, join your schools debate team or something... just channel that argumentative energy into something more useful.
C) "...i pick stupid things like company loyalty cause its fun, it makes me feel like im pledging allegiance myself to one massive faction..."
Really? good for you man, you will do well as a pawn in one of those monolithic, money-grubbing, soul-less companies. I really mean that. I know from experience that being a free thinker in The Corporate World will only ruin things. You'll do well and I'm truly happy for you.

I know that all looks really sarcastic and mean, but it's not. Your cool, even if I disagree with everything you stand for.

This. All companies are as bad as each other, and considering Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft, Sony or Apple to be more morally upstanding than any other is, at best naivety.

What about the Apple iPhone?

Web browsing, email, music, movies, productivity applications, games.

Oh, and mobile phone calls.
