I still have Atlas Shrugged on my bookshelf, ready to read after Ulysses, and my degree.

It's a shame that a movie couldn't pull off a good enough adaptation, so I'll have to trawl through Rand's writing to get at her message...

I like how apparently Bioshock, a videogame, captured Rand's philosophy better than a movie dedicated to her work.

Go games I guess.

Oh, wow. I didn't even know that they were making a movie of Atlus Shrugged. As I guessed, it's probably terrible.

Not much of a surprise that a movie did a poor book adaptation, but I'm interested to see Dorian Gray which looked kinda interesting.

My take on Ayn Rands objectivism, I personally don't believe we can trust people to do the right thing, it's just human nature for people to put their interests first before anyone else or society. I have the same feeling about Reagnomics. Not to say that EVERYONE is a self centered jerk, just a lot.

I don't even think the books that great but that looked awful. To be fair the books is well written when it's not having characters give massive speeches but as fiction its far too heavy handed and as philosophy it's just bad. Really her philosophy is pretty much Nietzche's but toned down which makes it less abohrent but also less interesting.

But once again the movie just looks awful.

I'm not surprised that The Fountainhead (1949) was a better movie. That's mostly because Rand wrote the screenplay herself.

Maybe this move will inspire someone to make a reboot with a better screenplay and a more well known cast.

Until he mentioned it at the end, I was confusing Atlas Shrugged with The Fountainhead. I read the latter and I can't remember if I read the former. But I fucking hated The Fountainhead. God. Damn. Awful. I mean, I still loved Bioshock, but I tend to detest anything associated with Ayn Rand, the pretentious, ruskie ****.

Well, if it's so bad it's boring I find that to be worse than if it's a disaster because seeing a disaster can be quite compelling (see Battlefield Earth).

On Rand though, I found her to be a childish hypocrite unaware of what a society needs in order to actually function. Like Fontaine said "somebody needs to scrub the toilets".

I actually like how Bioshock was probably the best adaptation and deconstruction of the works of Ayn Rand during its best parts and achieves what this movie could not do- too bad it's from an 'inferior' form of entertainment and doesn't just give Ayn Rand's novel a tongue bath, so the political wingnuts on the right would never know anything about it.

I suppose I am biased, though, since I read Atlas Shrugged for an extra-credit reading group in high school and was one of the handful of people in the group that didn't think it was anything to write home about, let alone something that deserves all the attention that it has gotten along with Rand herself. All I ever read and saw of Ayn Rand was an astronomically selfish, racist *****, constantly avoiding criticism and other realities with an equally ugly personality to match her fugly appearance. Also she died while on Medicare AND Social Security... Couldn't even follow by example

That's pretty disappointing, if not entirely surprising. There is a spot of hope, though; that the creation of this film might open the way for more capable people to make a better adaption in the future. In the mean time, I guess I'll just read the actual book once I'm done trucking through The Fountainhead.
