True, but it's so hard for me to cope with the idea of anyone else even attempting to play the joker. In my mind no one will ever be right for it. But you're right, the joker is too central to the Batman franchise to get dismissed like the Scarecrow was. I guess I'll just have to let Christopher Nolan make these tough decisions and trust his judgement - that is until the movie comes out, then I'll be a judgmental bastard.
For what it's worth, I severely doubt we'll see Joker again in any capacity in the current "run" of Batman movies. That clearly wasn't the plan, his final dialogue in "Dark Knight" is clearly setting up an ongoing confrontation with Batman... but that dialogue was written for a still-living Heath Ledger. Even if they were to try it, what actor worth anything is going to volunteer his body for the innevitable flaying he's gonna take no matter how good he is? If he's anything less-than-perfect, people will have a cow, and even if he's good no one will want to admit it for fear of disrespecting the dead. It's a lose-lose, no one in their right mind is gonna go for that. I'd be very, VERY surprised if we saw a new Joker... at least not until there's a new Batman, too.
Which, incidentally, IS going to happen. I don't think we'll see more than one more Batman movie in the Begins/Knight continuity, and at this point I doubt that Nolan will direct #3 (he'll produce and work on the script, someone working "under" him will direct) because, again, another lose-lose scenario: TDK's massive success was a once-in-a-lifetime thing that won't be duplicated, which means that #3 is almost-garaunteed to not be as huge of a hit, which means that it'd go from "Nolan is the Bat-master!" to "Has Nolan lost it?" With someone else directing, he wins either way - if it's good: "Good call, Chris!" If not, "Man, I guess Nolan WAS the key!"
Either way, I'd imagine that most of the main cast (including Bale) will be gone after Part 3 and there'll be new people playing Batman etc. It's NOT going to be like Bruce Timm and Paul Dini's DC Animated Universe, where a mostly-consistent cast and crew keeps a single continuity going through five interlocking series over 20 years... not gonna happen. MAYBE Warner Bros. will get the idea that you don't need to reboot an origin again and they'll just keep things going in a vauge sort-of continuity like the original Bond movies. But at that point, I think, is when you'll see a new Joker.
