um... what exactly were you expecting Bob? with this much talent behind it, what other reason would it have for being in Dump Month(January) than the plot going Full Retard? honestly man, WB and Columbia set up a fake mystery with the trailers in order to put asses in seats for a genre movie, covering the religious angle for fear of scaring atheist action lovers off or getting backlash when the bible-thumpers walk in to find a hard R actioner. and you fell for it. that's between you and the marketing company, it's not the movies fault that you were expecting something it never intended to give you. i figured that what you described was more than likely the plot, but i could give a shit. i wanna know how Denzel does as a badass post-apocalyptic monk, how Kunich is as the action-girl sidechick. i wanna know if Oldman's cranked it up to 11 to hit full Zorg/Stansfield mode. is the action cool, is the cinematography good, that kind of shit. and how is a post-apocalyptic movie looking post apocalyptic a bad thing? "b-western re-enacted by the homeless?" vegetation's scarce following major earth-shattering kabooms, as are raw materials for clothing and other necessities, meaning shit gets used and patched up til it can't be patched anymore.

you sound like i did when i walked out of Funny People after Bana showed up. yeah, it wasn't the movie you walked in expecting, we get that. we also get that once you realized that it wasn't the movie you'd built up in your head from deliberately(and rather blatantly) dishonest trailers and commercials, you simply stopped giving a shit. kinda disappointing is all.

I'm not sure why some people seem to think movie bob is being anti-religious, or why they seem to think that there's something wrong with focusing on a plot in a review.
He did mention the characters and acting.

He said they were one note, and underused respectively. With cliche universe, and straightforward banal plot. A pathetic and shallow attempt at the Faux profound, an empty shell with no true depth or substance.

At least that's how read it.

He's not promoting burning crosses.
Dude, he spent more than half the review saying "Yeah, it's a bible; just a bible. He's on a mission from God" in an incredulous 'How stupid is that?' voice. He devoted about one sentence for each character. It's pretty clear that the entire movie was spoiled for him by the premise, and as I said above, even if you don't believe in God, why should that impact your ability to watch a film about faith and its power? Nothing there saying that YOU have to believe in it.
I am surprised movie bob dose not hate so irrationally on fantasy stuff....

I saw the movie and I have to disagree with you bob.

I thought the dialogue was actually well done, I found the premise engaging, and I found the action scenes to be worth the price of admission.

i hate to say it, but i'm almost on their side with this one. as an atheist, i'd already pieced together what this one was gonna be about, and every other review on the web's confirmed exactly what i was expecting. however, the phrases "cool" and "fun" tended to pop up a bit more. what kills me more than anything is that he pans this one for being one-note and stupid, and then turns around and praises War Zone(which i also enjoyed, despite it being every bit as retarded and over-the top as this one sounds). it's like the morons who praise Boondock Saints as the greatest shit ever and then call Tarantino and over-rated hack in the same breath. inconsistent doesn't even begin to cover it.

I don't care.
I still really, really want to see this.
Big fan of Denzel anyway.
He's not as typecasted as some action heroes, like Clive Owen.

Oh, Clive. You poor, poor bastard.

Makes it sound like a bad/typical game story only with a bible. Lots of grim, badass scenes that happen for reasons that people only vaguely care about, but the devs think is good enough, with an ending that pushes home the point that the whole thing is just bullshit anyway and you should stop playing and do something else. I can't see how a bible would be more clever if it was hollowed out with something in it as that would be even more cliche but since Moviebob seems to like Superhero movies that is probably what he would prefer.

The only thing that I don't hate about this whole situation is the poster who references the Blues Brothers movie. I wouldn't mind watching that again.

really u guys i think the plot is interesting enough to see the film and when has Denzel given a bad performance the same goes for gary oldman as soon as someone mentions religion everyone freaks out and says it must be bad or it must be boring and just cause it uses religion in it's main plot i strongly doubt that is is going to teach the people who view this movie on how to be a good Christian also I feel that Movie Bob has been wrong before with the film the road which I thought was a very well made film but i think that the book of eli looks like a great film and think that it is worth seeing

Yeah, the road is one of moviebob's reviews that I disagree with heavily because the road was an amazing movie. So, something tells me I won't agree with this one.

I was expecting this movie to be pretty bad, and apparently I was right. I rarely laugh at a movie trailer, but this one made me laugh at how dumb and unoriginal it seemed.

Having gotten into a sneak preview of this film I agree with Bob, almost.

He is right, the plot is very flat. If this was the 50s or another era then it might not have seemed as out of place, a guy on a mission from god, but its not.

While I was still entertained by the movie and the wonderful job the actors did that almost made up for the flat plot(except oldman who to me seemed like he was phoning it in), I think the movie would have been miles better if it was not based on god as some substantial thing, but instead on faith and renewing it in the human populace that is left.

As much as I hate to give into peer pressure... this. I was really disappointed as well, since you spent the entire video complaining about the plot, and nothing more. I hope you aren't turning into a professional whiner, since I agreed a lot with your other reviews.
I get the feeling that this was all you really could say about the film. The acting is good, the story is there and there's some good fight scenes. Apart from that...well...it's like Yahtzee reviewing Peggle, what else do you say after enfuriatingly pretty mind-cocaine.?

Possibly...it's not as bad as The Lovely Bones?

This movie just got filed under "Drunken Heckle" material, don't think I'll be checking it out in theaters.

Id probably have burned the book and tried to start a new religion loosely based on christian ideals without having all of the baggage

I'm a Christian and I didn't find that MovieBob was simply religious-bashing. I agree... the premise feels very weak. So the bombs fall and suddenly EVERYONE is anti-religion, burning all the holy books? If anything, I think an apocalyptic war would actually cause an INCREASE in religion.

The whole "only bible left" concept seems very unbelievable to me, especially on a global scale; it strikes me as another case of American films acting like they're the only country in the world worth caring about. Who's to say there isn't one left in Canada? In Europe somewhere? Anywhere else?

I can't help but think about that scene in "The Day After Tomorrow" where the librarian(?) guy is clutching an old bible and spewing nonsence that if the West (see: America) falls, it would be the end of civilization, and he would at least preserve that one book if that was the case.

Oh, and of course, it's the Bible. Christian though I might be, just ONCE I'd like to see a different holy book being used as a plot device...

Eh, I see what you mean. It just pisses me off that it gets marked as bad since it involves God.
I don't think it's just because of that, it's just that it's ONLY that. There's just this guy travelling to some Mountain to ditch this ring...oops...that's the other boring movie. ;)
Also, The Lovely Bones will probably be bad, and the idea was done before, someone helping solve their death as a ghost.
Having read the book...No. It really hasn't been done before. The problem is that it wasn't done right in the film.
