Being British, I caught this film a long while back and as far as I'm concerned it's an instant classic.
Chris Morris is a comedy genius. If you haven't watched Brass Eye or The Day Today,well... there's really no excuse... GO!
Having said that, you can imagine my expectations were high and I'm pleased to say I wasn't disappointed.
Bob is right about his small screen origins showing through... this could have easily been made as a TV mini series but regardless but there's a lot here to love. The characters are likeable and painfully human, the situation is horrific and absurd... like all great comedy, it's that friction that creates all the big laughs.
Alot of the best jokes make very British cultural references but these only serve to make the characters more believable by rooting them in a very firm reality...
This really challenges the concept that terrorists are somehow foreign or alien... these people are recognisably English, and that makes it more scary and more poignant. For anyone familiar with this part of the country, these people feel very real in many ways.
My favourite moment was one character explaining the 'martyrdom' they're trying to achieve as being like skipping the queue at Alton Towers (a well known theme park). Hence their adopted battle cry (and the biggest laugh I've got out of any movie in years) RUBBER DINGY RAPIDS!
Rant over... enjoy
