I like Tarantino but this movie was pretty bad. It's an insane jewish revenge story. Luckily Jeffery Goldberg also agrees with me and seems to think it appeals to a lot of jews who fantasize about killing nazis and hitler http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200909/tarantino-nazis , which for some reason makes it a good movie.

Not being jewish I don't think I really connected with the movie at all. And for the first time in a Tarantino movie I predicted the majority of what was going to happen in each scene.

I didn't like this movie.
Tarentino's movies are usually action based according to my friends. This had too much talking, a few minutes of action then more talking.
Some scenes were okay, but I won't be seeing it again.

@Belle1960 - That's awefull, you missed out on quite a lot.
@EmileeElectro - Didn't you think Death Proof had more talking. - Also, LISTEN to the talking, it's very well written. (Death Proof talking I believe was just about nails, it was aweful)

@Moviebob, Hi, been watching a while (also on Screwattack), decided to finally signup.
Christoph Waltz blew me away in this movie, his performance was very very convincing and I was truly immersed in this film. I believe the man deserves every award he gets (see his Golden Globe acceptance speech).

@Moviebob (again) I liked, Kill Bill, I like pt. 2 more after I saw that, but then, I wanted to watch them again on DVD, but couldn't quite realise why anymore... it was just... OK to me.
I guess that it was just hyped too much for me.
But I believe that, for me, this movie had it all, Tarantino finally made it right. Good action, great talking, excellent compelling convincing performances...

If ever you get the time to do a review on a not-new movie (like Heavy Metal a few weeks ago) could you share your thoughts on Stardust with us. I found it to be an afternoon very well spent.

I have to say, after having it built up for me for some time, Basterds left me cold. There was certainly a lot to enjoy in it, but frankly, it felt like it was all down hill after the first brilliant scene.

In a lot of ways, the movie felt less polished and more derivative than what I've come to expect from Tarantino. Recycled music from Kill Bill? Recycled fonts from Kill Bill? A sudden and unnecessary narration by Samuel L. Jackson? A stylish intro montage for a completely insignificant character? It all felt like Tarantino going through the motions of his well honed style, but not really putting any heart into it.

But what really left me cold was the ending. I'm a Jew and all these friends told me I would get a real kick out of it. And I like violent films. I loooove Kill Bill. But that just seemed like masturbatory sadism to me. Nothing really satisfying about it.

Although, one friend made an interesting point: that maybe having that scene make people uncomfortable was part of the point, and that maybe he was trying to make us think twice about our readiness to indulge in Nazi bloodbaths. But if that were true, it would run contrary to how a lot of people are viewing it.

Really, two things make that movie for me: Chistoph Waltz and the scene in the basement. Probably will be the first Tarantino movie I don't buy.

Eli Roth wasn't Tarantino's first choice for Donny, it was Adam Sandler, but Sandler dropped out due to scheduling conflict with Funny People.

Wow moviebob, you prattled on just as much as the movie did. There could have been about 1/2 as much talking in this film as so much of it seemed to rehash the same idea, or talk about the same occurance as another one. Yes, I did like the movie, would I suggest someone else see it? That depends on the person.

Just sayin'....

Possibly somebody else has already said it in this topic, but not every WWII German soldier was a member of the nazi party. That was something that a lot of American WWII vets felt was important to differentiate (German Soldier =! Nazi/SS/Gestapo), as you can see in the interviwes in Band of Brothers.

So, about half of the Basterds bloody actions were probably unjustified, which explains the movie title.

Pratically nodoby in that movie is squeak-clean as for as morality goes.

Forced to disagree with this one, I thought Kill Bill was shockingly poor, and Eli Roth almost killed this movie for me (not saying he's a bad chap or anything). This, for me, was a series of really great intense scenes that don't actually work together to create a coherent or engaging narrative. It was an OK film, but felt like it really could have been great. Still hopeful Tarantino will make the awesome film he's capable of doing, but very disheartened to learn he's making Kill Bill 3. In my mind he's just a bit of a sell out...

umm... There were quite a few References to 70s films...

Ed French= Edwinge Fench
Antonio Marghetti= Look him up

and there's a bunch of other stuff too. Even the name is from an Italian Dirty Dozen knock-off. The Tension Sting Music was taken from The Entity.

How?

He's still doing what he's always done... The writing has gotten slightly better but that's probably just because over time he has perfected his craft.

Thank you MB.

I saw the film first, and found myself unsettled and a little confused. Also the right hemisphere of my brain wanted to scream, and then run outside and set cars on fire; in protest of the film that the Nazis were premiering.

Then I watched your review, and it became clear to me. My right brain has put the torch down, pledged to go peacefully, and willingly do community service to pay for the nice State Trooper's squad car.

I would have felt better if Mister Wiki could assure me that powerheads were developed before 1945...
... but that's Hollywood for ya.

I want to watch the film again, but now my right brain has an irrational fear of it. It was hard to watch. In a much different way than how 'Borat' was hard to watch. I'll call that a good thing.
