Aww, I was hoping for The King's Speech, the movie that's going to sweep the oscars.

Rock on. I have girl crushes on both Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried, so seeing them both in one review was awesome. Also, I was really hoping this movie was going to be good. I generally agree with your opinion, so now I have a reason to go see it :)

Interesting review, it's good to see MovieBob mixing it up a bit.

The only bit I'd mention that Romcoms or as I call them "Chick Flicks" are a successful and constnatly produced genere because that general characture of "what women want" or what someone's mother is like, tends to hit enough women with a shotgun effect that they come and see this movies, which make enough money, that they continue producing them to make even more money.

Typically, I can deal with a lot of the cliques, except for the bits where people awkwardly but profoundly try and express their feelings for each other. It rarely works, feels natural, or like something anyone would ever say. I find such scenes can cause almost physical pain when I witness them.

I feel such things are best expressed abstractly, a lot of that stuff can be said with a look, and come accross much better in the flow of a movie, than sitting there for ten minutes talking about feelings in a way that makes me want to beat myself unconscious on the row of seats in front of me (or with the nearest blunt object if I'm at home).

I guess girls like that kind of stuff though, since they keep selling it, and a lot of girls seem to think that's the best part of these movies, which is why it kind of qualifies as the chick flick equivilent of a "money scene" that sells the whole thing. An example of the differances between men and women in action.

The problem is, films like this will be alienating a large portion of their potential audience; such as myself. Sexual Conservatives like myself are driven away by all the promiscuity and debauchery going on- I'll be finding it almost imposable to connect with the characters.

Roll on January, the King's Speech looks like where I am gonna be enjoying- a good old-fashioned cast, with a nice, morally agreeable premise and plot.

I agree with Therumancer. I think movies need to display love more subliminal. Love forms in your head, not because you talk about it.
I think bobs view of romances is confusing. "Hollywood has this crazy idea of a strange Mother figure that likes these kind of movies". Yeah, so why are romance movies that successful and why do many women, old or young, like them so much? I think that point doesn't quite hold. Fact is, that they have a market and appeal to us in some form or another. That is not an invention of Hollywood.
I think real sexual attraction towards your lover is an important part (notice, a part) of a real relationship but if the movies have the same hollow formula and cliches just with sex scenes of good looking celebrities thrown in...then whats the difference? Eye candy? It's easier for women to drag their boyfriends into the movies because a hot actor is seen naked? I don't know, seems like the same old thing. It wouldn't matter to me.
I think good old Bob is getting mesmerized by boobs again. :p

Are you seriously saying we have to overlook everything you said in your 'Yes' tirade, describing every romantic comedy cliche in existence (The only thing it's missing is her gay friend, apparently), just because they have sex?
No. But we do have to overlook it because, look, Anne Hathaway is totally not wearing anything.

Seriously though, I did not get this review either. I don't really know what types of rom-coms Bob's thinking about, but, hell, plenty of them have to do with sex. The only thing that apparently separates this movie from the rest is actual nudity.

Colour me unimpressed.

Glad to hear a character focused chick flick that actually focuses on realistic characters. I've seen several chick flicks that weren't terrible, but nothing I'd see multiple times. It'll be nice to see if this film changes that.

Sooo... You only liked it because you got to see Anne Hathaway naked and having lots of sex? Seems like a rather shallow reason to recommend a movie.

I was sold at "Anne Hathaway as a sexy free spirit." No Offense to all the other lovely ladies, but IMHO Anne Hathaway is the most beautiful actress of this generation. I could gaze into her bright smile and eyes all day.

I was a little worried her talent was getting relegated to the "Pure Virtuous" Typecast.I am not at all completely familure with all of her movies, but I watched her go from Princess Diaries to Bridewars to Devil Wears Parada to...um...Get Smart. (Lets face it, not a good movie) Yeah, she has a sexy moment in Devil Wears Parada, but its just to contrast her loyal character. In Get Smart, her character's sexieness just felt contrived because of the omoage to the original character she was portraying. (And yeah, Anne's characters all had spirit, but it took a back seat to the virture in those movies.)

But as a genuine, sexy, free spirit... Horray. I guess what I'm looking for in this movie is her spirit taking the lead over her usual virtuosity... oh and her hot naked body.

OK, Mr. Movie Bob, I usually take your recommendations on blind faith, but for a Rom-Com I simply cannot go that route this time. The problem I see with Rom-Coms is that they rely on emotional pablum (a.k.a. 'the Hallmark crap' you see in most of these movies) to manipulate the audience. Perhaps this movie's motivations are grounded in reality (sex), but if that reality still bends to accommodate the standard Rom-Com emotional manipulations, then I can't see myself enjoying this movie. Although I will keep it in mind if I happen to find myself a date in the next couple months - which I also can't see myself doing. Looks like another night of MST3K-&-bong-rips sophistication for me! 8D

EDIT: Case-in-point to demonstrate my weariness: I saw Morning Glory recently on the promise that it would offer a glimpse into the world of television production. I got a decent taste of that, also got a nice shot of Rachel Adams in a very sexy pair of panties. But seeing what I came to see with a side of hot booty did not overshadow the emotional manipulation in the movie - the obvious cues for girlfriends to coo and go "Awwwww! Isn't that SWEEEEET??" Harrison Ford resolves the movie by cooking a fritada on the air. There's no fritada in the world that would keep me away from the Executive Producer's job on the Today Show and the huge bankroll that comes with it. NOT ONE FRITADA, ANYWHERE, MADE BY ANYONE.

Good review, but I'm not seeing the movie. I'm far too much of a cynic and had my heart crapped on far too many times to sit through the myriad of terrible cliches you mentioned. Love stories are only good when they are tragic, or at least involve tragic occurrences. Love is like faith, not truly interesting or worthwhile until it's been truly tested.

That old picture of you at the end is kind of nice. And you've worked in retail for 13 years? Dang... And now all you have to do to get paid is complain about stuff. And review movies. Nice!
