I gotta disagree with Bob this week. Not about the screening thing, he is right on the money with that. About Rango.
Rango is an excellent movie, and is certainly in the upper echelon of animated movies. First thing's first: Rango is not a kid's movie. Bob never really pointed that out as a flaw, but a lot of his commenters immediately jumped to that conclusion. Fact is, Rango can't even begin to be understood by a kid; they will absolutely love it, because it's beautiful, and genuinely funny a lot of the time. It takes an adult (not measuring that by age, I must emphasize) to really get half of the visual language and references that Rango uses. From the reference to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, to much of the overarching ramifications of the plot itself, Rango is not really a kid's film.
Does it have a lot of depth? This is an area that I can agree with Bob. No. Rango is over-long, though it always manages to keep you hooked well enough to not outstay its welcome. Understanding the movie requires an adult, but it's not like that's because it's such a deep meaning, it simply requires some thought. Yet, this movie's characters were endearing, well-acted, its jokes mostly came off right, and the clever references peppered throughout it really served to enhance the whole damn thing. A great movie, with a madcap plot (not that the narrative is the most important thing here).
