Escapist adverts are out of control...

I was just wondering if any one on the escapist has experienced this advert:

I believe it's some type of vertical banner advert, but this is a tremendously awful advert. I don't know if it could be my internet speed or problems with my browser, but these types of adverts will not close. In fact I've had numerous occasions when I repeatedly press the "X" and the add will move onto a video (which itself takes ages to load and go away).

Also, sorry if you can't see because of the low quality image, but the un-closeable add is blocking the end of the article. This just symbolizes the little respect the escapist has for those who aren't members of the pub club. I think how ad revenue is supposed to work is that you attract us to your content and the advertising companies pay you for having adds on the same page. It's not going to bloody work if you block your content from the viewers eyes! People will not want to get content they can't see.

I'm sort of okay with video adverts because I can have a tab open and try my best to ignore them, but this is just shoddy work with obvious signs that very little planning was put into it.

My questions to you are:
1.Has this ever happened to you, or is it just me? (If it is, God I'll look stupid)
2.What it your stance on adverts on the escapist?

It's only boring for me because I never get to see mine. I saw it once in the first week of getting Pub Club, and I've yet to see it in the last few months after.

But I agree: Ads are probably more interesting.

Do you remember what happened to extra credits because the escapist ran out of money, how do you think they make their money

I'm just saying this new type of advert Is actually driving me away from content, so in actual fact, the may receive less money because my page views are decreasing.

The video ads that play before video content are particularly annoying for me.
For some reason they stop the video im trying to watch from loading, so i have to keep refreshing the page until the ad decides to give up and stop starting itself/stopping my video.

Never had the bugged banner ads though

I remember a few days ago Escapist had talking audio adverts... AND YOU COULDN'T STOP THEM!

They're gone now but... I fear they will one day return *shudder*

I can honestly say that I haven't seen that ad, and I'm neither in the PubClub nor using any software or techniques that admitting to would get me banned. From what others have been saying, it sounds like something glitched out for you -- which sucks, but it could be much worse; it could be like the ads we were getting this time last year.

I can understand that The Escapist is having a tough time with money right now.. but i honestly feel like since the inception of the pub club, the ads have been getting progressively more annoying...So on principal im just going to have to endure these ads.

One word: Meebo. Ever since the disaster caused by that, they've learned that there's a limit to how obnoxious the ads can get before people will just say "screw the rules" and start blocking ads. It's been a lot more mellow ever since then; I mean, remember the ad blitz for Mass Effect 2, and the WoW ads that popped out if you moused over them (and that had barely any gap between them and the navigation buttons?) That all happened before the Meebo fiasco. Things have been pretty chill ever since.

I don't think so, after all remember the Meebo fiasco? I don't think the Escapist will go much further than silent banner ads and pre-video ads

I get those ads and they are increasingly annoying because they actually stop you from clicking on the topics on the page ( I had to refresh the browser 5 times to get an advert that didn't block the forum search button) I don't mind the ads, they pay for the site but an ad that actively stops you looking at the site is definitely a bad idea

I get this quite often. It appears to be some kind of bug or oversight at the escapist where vertical banner ads have been placed in a space designed for horizontal ads.

stop bitching about teh ads. the escapist needs money to continue to have good shows and a server in general. if you don't wanna see the ads, just get a pub club membership.
