Not sure if we are doing suggestions or ridicule, we seem to be flopping around.

Anyways, dream suggestion:

UN unifies the world into one country.

Slightly more "reasonable" US-centric suggestions:

-soft cap on lawsuits (like 250,000), with a special panel if your damages legitimately exceed that amount. This will help the medical industry, stop taxpayer dollars from going to people looking to make a quick buck via litigation, and curb the number of lawyers.
-end all lobbying
-term limits for all political positions

I wouldn't ever wish this, but it occurs to me that MANY of the problems persisting in politics today are from old fogies and their Cold War mentality. It's clear the younger generations are sick of it, but for some reason these types keep getting elected all over the world (or just taking power). I think the world will be a much better place once they all die. But again, I'm content to just wait it out.
Yes, and no.

On the one hand, yes, the people currently running the world tend to be old and set in their ways, they weren't always. I don't expect young people now not to have exciting new but similar issues once they get along.

Ah, I shall just state the three supreme laws I will put into effect once I'm voted Supreme Overlord.

1) No coffee except plain black served outside - want something else, make it yourself.
2) No Capitalizing Every Word Of A Sentence.
3) Insulting someone because of their job status gets them your job, and you get theirs (even if they're unemployed, tough break, shouldn't have been a jackass).
Okay who's the retard here with the highest paying job? You're a greedy fuck and society would be better off without you! :p

Oh I see! Crafty people will always find a way to play the system, won't they! Still I'd rub my hands in glee to see all those "I AM IMPORTANT!" stuck up "customers" (to be cheeky, "cuntstomers") that think they have free lease to insult service personnel because of their SO IMPORTANT AND DISTINGUISHED JOB get stuck as burger flippers and baristas.

Not that I think less of burger flippers and baristas, but they seem to, and forcing them into those roles is a kind of poetic justice.

I would suggest requiring that all potential politicians must pass tests in the following areas before they're allowed to run in an election.

1. Scientific literacy (set by the national academy of sciences)
2. Long-term planning
3. Compassion

Fail any of these tests and they'll have to wait until the next election to try again.

What's the estimation time before people start debating the "ridiculous suggestions" they actually support and the whole thread turns into a flamewar?

Personally I'll provide an instructional guide to superior posting:

1. Find thread with sensational headline.

2. Don't bother to read source material to discover problem is false.

3. Post comment bumming about how much of a travesty this is and everyone involved should be castrated and shot.

We've all done it at some point.

Thats ok. I just cant stand these gung ho people who go and kill animals just to hang them on a wall. Unless the animal is fit for human consumption or a direct threat to human safety it shouldnt be killed. Im not an animal rights activist i just dont like to see waste.

I can think of a few contradictions. Eg endangered animals should not be killed even if they can be eaten. If only a small part of the animal eg shark fin is eaten then it is a waste when theres plenty more high quality meat in the shark

MLA? No no no. Chicago name-year all the way. It's the only real citation format.

In fact, I propose that all formats besides Chicago be banned.

Also, any journal publisher that charges $40 US or more for a single-page article will have their assets confiscated by the government, their staff imprisoned for 35 years, and their entire collection of articles made public domain.

To make your inbox swell up even more:

Just for this I shall make it my life goal to hunt you down should you ever become supreme-overlord.
I shall hunt you down and insult you, using your job description as the basis of my insult, thus getting your job and the power to rule the earth.

Immediately, I shall make my first decree:
My first commandment shall be:

That whole job-change thing is only valid from now on if the insulted party agrees to the job-change.

And my second commandment shall be:

You may start serving coffee the way it's meant to be again. With milk.

Yep, I'll just see myself out now...

There was a post I saw a loooong time ago titled 'How to Please Everyone and Stop Wars. It May Work.' The basic idea was to divide countries up by style of government (Theocratic, Socialist, Democratic, Republic etc.) instead of ethnicity.

Had fun picking that one apart.

Population Limits - it would solve so many problems. It really would. If we could limit our population to 1 billion, we'd solve so many environmental problems. We'd be able to raise the standard of living for so many people. We don't need to have such a huge population to be rich - the US has less than China, but it is still richer than China, and even if China because as rich as the US (as it will, soon enough), it will still have a TON of poor people because China has too many people. It simply CAN'T provide a decent standard of living to THAT many people.

With 7 billion people, we can't give a "western" style life to all of them. If we limited our population to 1 billion or even less, then we potentially could.

I favour a 2 child per couple limit. You might think that would just "Stabilize" the population, but in fact, if you wanted to stabilize the population your birth rate would have to be somewhere along the lines of 2.3 per couple. Having it at a flat 2.0 will slowly, but surely, bring down the population. This will occur slowly enough so that we can adjust society.

Having less people means more resources for everyone else. No one would have to die, people could still have children. The change would not be drastic either.

But wait! If we have less people, won't our economy suffer!? Not necessarily! Again - look at the US. Less people, yet richer than China. And although you may not believe it, US manufacturing is still going quite strong - it's just that the jobs are declining because more and more of the workers are being replaced by robots and machines. A US factory today is 100 times more efficient than a US factory in the 1950s and employs a 10th of the workforce. Japan is still a huge economic entity despite shrinking population. Because of TECHNOLOGY. The idea that you have to have a lot of people in order to be rich is wrong. Okay, you do need a certain number of people, but you don't have to have a huge population. These days, having a huge population is a liability.

A 2.0 birth rate for everyone in the world would be the best thing that ever happened to this world. But of course, no one would ever go for it. People want the right to have as many children as they want, regardless of the impact that would have on the future. If we limited our population, we'd solve hunger, pollution, joblessness, and significantly cut back on poverty. But we won't. We won't.

I would ban arguments over the internet. World peace.

If you want to debate, fine. No vulgarities, all evidence clearly cited and no statistics except from governmental agencies.

I would also ban soda and soft drinks and replace them with light alcohol(1%). Soft drinks are pretty bad for your health and too much sugar makes people internet zealots.

Well...I think this has turned into a 'dubious ideas of your own' thread rather than 'bad ideas from other people' thread, which suits me just fine because I can't recall any off the top of my head.

Although I did like that one where I suggested mandatory psychic certification and declaring unlicensed practise as fraud, and someone else in the thread suggested mandatory beating instead.

The main supporting evidence you chose is highly problematic and thus not valid. USA exploited many, many countries to get to where is it today, and China did not start industrialization until 1990s and only opened up to the world near year 2000. China was a victim of US exploitation. US sold opium, textiles, and other imports to China(this is in 1960's onwards), which drove their own industries out of business as well as utterly decimate the working population in China as they became addicted to opium. The income flow out of China back then was astoundingly exploitative.

It's not pure "power and knowledge" that allowed USA it's richness. It's exploitation. Where does your diamonds come from? Where does the gold come from? Not that many mines in the U S of A.

Read about it:

Make every country on earth cut military spending to zero and use that money on a joint space program!

And maybe some money into fusion research too.
