Actually, I remimber a lot of this.
Things that stood out for me:
-March Maddness (Almost made me join) seriously, I wanted to vote. Drama not withstanding.
-The Extra Credits debacle (made me "quit" the site for a little while)
-That time we didn't like Jim Sterling.
-Femimism threads galore...and I actually liked reading most of them for a while.
-Gun Control threads
-Would you save the stranger or your dog from the whirlpool thread. And the meme that followed.
- The Mass Effect 3 threads.
-The Brony invasion
- I missed that slow motion show...what was it called? hmm.
- Vault101's ban, but that was pretty recent I think.
- The Dragon Age 2 Review.
Edit:
Oh! And the forum layout change I suppose. But I was actually one of those who liked the new change as the forums were more iPad/iPhone friendly.
Remember when the forum rules changed in 2011? I was there. In fact, I was the one who started the discussion thread that eventually led the Escapist to edit the forum rules again.
Son, I wish I could tell you my war stories, but our terms and guidelines prevent it. Seriously. Several others and myself are responsible for an addendum to the rules.
Yes, the March Mayhem which involved Zynga was a pretty heated one. Probably one of the largest I can think of. I was away from here during the Extra Credits episode, so only learnt about that one on my return a little while after.
There was also that time when Lulzsec were a big thing and they did a DDOS on the website, that affected it for a few hours.
Aside from that the vast majority of them have been recent.
- MLP taking over the forums. Bronies posting pictures/videos/quotes from the show in every topic, regardless of relevancy, a bunch of people losing their heads over it and getting themselves infractions for responding, plus the countless complaint threads about it.
- Anita Sarkeesian which is very kindly still being dragged on thanks to site contributors.
- I'd say the XBone, but that was pretty one sided. I think most Xbox fans did the smart thing and kept their opinions to themselves while people raged.
- Mass Effect 3, like with the XBone it was more of a massacre.
- The White Guy Defence Force strip from Critical Miss, although I am not sure that counts seeing as unlike the above, it was contained to the topic itself. I didn't notice dozens of threads about it like the above.
The only stand out was when the only person i had "friended" on here, Kortney [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/Kortney] was hit by a car and passed away.
I remember seeing the memorial thread made after that. I was only a newbie on the Escapist though, and even now I don't particularly know anyone outside of one RP thread (and also @Colour Scientist:, kinda, in a weird twist of fate). It was still sad to see that thread though, and the number of people that obviously liked her. My condolences.
Lets see, war stories... well, I do remember being on the Escapist when Occupy Wall Street was going on. A lot of people got kind of crazy during that. Now I'm not saying that there weren't a lot of protesters attending that for completely the wrong reasons, but when someone posted a video of an obese cop sitting on a motorcycle parked on the shattered leg of a fallen protester, leering down at him then getting off and beating the shit out of him when he kicked the bike over in panic and desperation... a lot f people on here supported the cop and said that the protester was being excessively violent. Even now, I wonder if they thought it was fucking Opposite day or something. Whatever the protester was doing before that video started rolling, the cop was the one using a shocking level of excessive violence, and with complete arrogance as well.
OT: I remember March Mayhem before I wasn't a Moderator. Hahaha, good times.
Then I remember March Mayhem where I was a Moderator. I saw some shit during that week... *sobs openly*
I also remember when I first became a Mod, and thought "I need a theme." because I'm a sucker for themes.
So I started calling myself Spidermod to see if it'd catch on, and it did for the most part! In a way, I created my own history for myself.
My earliest recollection of a massive site event was the great April Fools joke of 2010. That was amazing and if you weren't there, I feel sorry for you. A lot of people who were involved aren't here anymore anyway so you guys probably wouldn't care. =p
Hmm. Would you mind refreshing my memory. I only vaguely recall this.
OT: I'm kinda the old guy who's been around. I rarely played a direct part in the goings on, but I've visiting this forum almost every day since late 2008. I was there in the background for a lot of big events on this site.
One in particular I recall is the adblock debacle. A handful of users instantly banned for recommending adblock without thinking. They were let off in the end, but the rules of the forum have been changed since, specifically in reaction to this.
I Always loved reading the eternal nothingness threads. Sometimes that name was so fitting, he'd wall of text over nothing. No idea what happened to that guy in the end.

Yeah I remember a lot of people who have come and gone, like that guy who had the Evil Dead GIFS as his avatar. Another guy who had Dr. Frank-N-Furter as his avatar, there's a lot of people who have either left or been banned, it's sad.
They're like Vietnam flashbacks, but obviously worse, because this is the internet, and the internet is far more traumatising than something as petty as 'real' war.
I remember the days of Doraleous and Associates (I still have abandonment issues), and Extra Credits (That was a shit storm). Both of them were great shows, and they will be missed.

It feels weirder for me mainly because I've been around for quite a bit yet can't remember half of what some of you guys are talking about. The biggest things I can remember are the EC incident and the 2011/2012 brony wars.
MM truly was mayhem, wasn't it? Sooooo many flame wars...
I've been an active user for a few years now, and seen most of what's been mentioned above, but there's one incident which particularly sticks out to me - and which does not seem to have been mentioned yet.
I don't think I ever actually posted anything in that fateful thread [small](had I done so, I might not be here today)[/small], but it looked interesting enough that I found myself reading through several pages of it. It concerned a topic which, to me, seemed innocent enough, but which had nonetheless sparked considerable controversy and heated argumentation.
I believe I was trying to form a strong enough opinion on the matter to take a side and join the debate, but somewhere around the tenth page or so, I was distracted by one of those 'User has been banned' - notifications. Which, as you all know, link to whatever the person was banned for. I had never passed up one of those before, and I wasn't going to start now. Perverse curiosity aside, it is also a very good way of improving my own conduct on these forums. I clicked the link.
To my surprise, it took me back to around page two of the same thread, to a post which I had read earlier and then moved on - decidedly unoffended and even nodding in non-committal agreement. And then I looked around the rest of the page.
At least every third post belonged to someone who had suddenly been perma-banned. I moved on to the next page. Same thing. Suddenly, there were more ban-notices on every page of that thread than I had ever seen before. I browsed every page until I was back where I had left off, and was still knee-deep in permabans! I tried to post a quick comment on this, but the thread had been locked.
The management eventually came forth with an explanation for this. I can't remember if it was a mod posting in the thread itself or a separate notice among the Escapist's headlines, but the reason for all the permabans was finally made clear:
The topic of the thread had been ad-blockers. A way to remove advertising from whatever site you were browsing. Which ones to use, and how to use them. I had no idea this was a bad thing. Neither, it seemed, had the legions of newly perma-banned users. However, the notice made clear, ads are how most websites make their money. The Escapist included. Yeah. The community had been openly discussing how best to sabotage The Escapist - without knowing about it!
I spent some time wondering if the perma-banned were still able to contact the moderators and plead their cases. Then I spent some time thinking about contacting the moderators myself, explaining my own view of the situation and appeal on the banned's behalf.
Before I got around to doing so, however, the management posted a new notice: Apparently, the perma-banned WERE still able to submit their own appeals, had done so in droves, and at least most of them had gotten their posting-privileges back. The management realized that it had overreacted, apologized to all involved -
- and, best of all, introduced the Publisher's Club! Anyone willing to join would receive a number of small but welcome privileges such as larger avatars, customizeable titles, the option of watching all Escapist videos in HD - and NO ADS! (In exchange, of course, for a yearly membership fee intended to compensate for the lost ad revenue.)
Only shit storm was zynga in MM one year, the whole "they're a scurge on the gaming industry" and the staff were like "well they make games (and we can't remove them now)".... There was the extra credits payment shit as well.
Other minor shit storms are stuff like the end of mass effect 3 and the many, MANY threads all saying the same stuff.
I think there is a shit storm that can't start, people seemingly want an open discussion about ads and moderation issues but they get locked down with a "contact a mod" written as the last post. Seems like a good idea to me, have a place where things can be openly discussed, mods to community, instead of mods to individuals... Would also prevent repeating stuff, especially if the OP was updated with what and why... Although if that already exists I haven't seen it.
I remember the days of Doraleous and Associates (I still have abandonment issues), and Extra Credits (That was a shit storm). Both of them were great shows, and they will be missed.
