Having recently joined my country's military (or more accurately, Defence Forces, since they pretty much only take part in peacekeeping duties overseas), I'm interested to see how many Escapists have served in their national armies, and if deployed overseas, where.

I expect a surprisingly high amount so prove me right.

Why do you? This is a gaming site, I can't imagine a great number of us would take actually being shot at when we can just pretend to get shot at in a game.

I'd never join the army; I could never wake up that early.

OIF: Feb-Mar 2003

Did things and didn't do things that I regret doing and not doing.

That's all I'm going to say.

When I was young it was always either going to be The Police or The Army now I've settled on it being the Police though, so maybe in another life.

You'd think that, but a lot of countries, some of whom have a few representatives on this site, still have national service. Germany, for example.

I'm with you on the early starts in any case. I had no idea half six in the morning existed until recently.

I live in Israel, so I don't have much of a choice. In a few years, I have to either join the IDF or leave the country for like ten years.

I wouldn't even consider it. I know myself well enough to know that I couldn't handle the pressure, and late nights and "early" mornings are bad enough, without the mornings actually being early. Insomnia is not a good thing.

Well, I was going to join the reserves at some point. I was thinking about joining the regulars if college ever fell through, however, it doesn't look like it will.

Irish, by the way. Like yourself.
Recruitment embargo might put the kibosh on that. It's across the whole DF at the minute.

I'd recommend the Reserves, it's a good way of mixing college and the military.

I hope to be accepted into the US Air Force Academy after I graduate from high school. If that doesn't work I'll either do AFROTC at a college studying aeronautical engineering or go to Annapolis if they accept me.

Do they not have any alternatives for conscientious objectors? I can't imagine a stint in the IDF boding well for pacifists.

I'm a non-violence, peace loving hippie, I would never join the army. Also I have Crohns so I doubt they would take me...or at least I know they cant draft me.

The Ultraorthadox, the Arabs, and anyone who has some medical condition that prevents their joining, don't have to join. Pacifists do, but there are tons of jobs to do in the IDF that don't involve fighting.
As for alternatives for anyone who isn't part of the above groups but doesn't want to join- prison, or the aforementioned leaving the country.

They made a secretary out of an attack pilot? Thats some BS right there. I don't blame you for leaving.
