My brother was an AirForce firefighter. He was stationed in Al Asad.

OT:

I doubt very much I'll ever join the U.S. military. I'm not much of a nationalist, and am probably moving to Europe anyway. If I were to join, I'd hope to be stationed in Germany. That is a very easy deployment.

I have a feeling that actually being in a firefight would make me snap. I've already got psychological issues, I'm not going to push for more and become the fat guy from Fullmetal Jacket.

On a side note, I have a friend who's joining the military. We're all terrified, because he's an ass, and when he comes back he'll have the physical means to back up the jackassery.

This song sums up my views on the military perfectly (Rise Against are incredible)
I hate the military, I see no heroism in it, just hurting other people and being hurt in return and accomplishing absolutely fuck all
Soldiers in Iraq right now are being literally blown up left, right and centre and for what?! I have no idea. Is it for their oil? Or preventing them from attacking us?

In the words of The King Blues: "Going to war to prevent war was the most stupid thing I ever heard"

I would never join the army, just not really my thing. I wouldn't mind it too much it's just, you know, not all that fun.

There really wasn't much against the military in that rant, mostly against the war and politicians.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann probably has some of the most epic putdowns ever uttered by man.

I believe Marine Mike is one of the answers to the thread.

I'd enlist if my country was threatend with a serious enemy, But i dont class terrorism as a valid threat, It mainly hysteria.

I'd probably join the Peacekeepers, but I'll be honest: I probably couldn't carry all that shit all day, so I'd end up being something like a... potato peeler?

There wasn't really anything against the military in that rant, it seemed to be mostly against politicians and this individual war. I don't really think you can argue against the vitality of a nation having a military, and if you do have an argument that isn't cantered around the "why can we be friends" argument I would love to hear it.

PS: Rise Against is one of the preachiest band to date, that isn't a complement. You also need to fix yuor code, take out one of the "=".

Grandfather aced the NAVY electrical engineering exam and was set to go be a sailor till the Korean war broke out the ARMY drafted him and he went and became an army engineer. My mom was in the army national guard and helped with Katrina's aftermath. My ex husband his dad was in the air force and went to vietnam and his grandfather was a sailor in WW2.

In retrospect, Marine Mike may be the definitive answer to this thread.

Hell no. I will defend my country if it is directly attacked but detest any soldier who goes elsewhere to fuck with some poor other country and its citizens.
To me, if you participate in the war in iraq then you are every bit as guilty as that lying fuck Bush and should be branded a war criminal.
Well congrats, you broke the golden rule. "Hate the War Not The Soldier"

I have no will to join in Canada's Armed Forces. I mean, I'd be fine with defending my country and I support the peacemaking effort, I just don't support the military system in general.

I don't deal with stress well, at all. If I were to be put in a training environment, I'd probably be the one who loses it and end up either going AWOL (and fucking my life over even further) or killing myself.

Yeah! Also, every petroleum engineer anywhere in the world who operated an oil rig at some point is responsible for the Deepwater Horizon spill, and they should all be made to pay compensation and have their jobs stripped from them.

Also, every person serving in the police force should be held responsible for any case of police brutality, or corruption, anywhere in the world, ever as far as I'm concerned; no justice no peace.

Oh, and that terrible Transformers 2 came out last year, that was so horrible, let's just be done with it, round up every movie director from Peter Jackson to Uwe Boll, line them up against a wall and perforate their skulls.

To me, thats the only that I can see this working, they're all as guilty as each other.

Thats not the golden rule... Thats actually a pretty stupid rule.
Soldiers sign up for a unfair war so therefore they are war criminals. They support it by joining. Thus they deserve every scrap of hatred thrown their way.
That was my lame attempt at a joke but I digress...

Many of the Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, and Sailors who fought in the war were already in the military before the war began, so many of them had little choice in the first pale. You also go to the wild assumption that none of the servicemen and women are going there with the intention of trying to help, which even if the war is a "crime" you can hardly call them guilty since they are going with the best intentions. And lastly when you generalize an entire war; especially a complex one like Iraq as completely good or bad, you usually are completely wrong. I don't think we should have started the war in Iraq in the first place but even I will gladly acknowledge that Iraq now has a good chance of becoming a beacon of light in the middle east within the next decade.

I would like to join the Canadian military. But my health (psychological and physical) and physical fitness (athletic-wise, I'm not overweight or anything) would keep me from being accepted.

And what about the soldiers who enlisted before the war even started? Do they deserve that hatred too? As far as I know, they get sent overseas. They don't choose to go overseas.
