... to both celebrate the life, and mourn the death of NinjaDeathSlap's Xbox 360, Xavier. Who, after an astonishing 6 years of faithful service, tragically passed away this evening after finally falling victim, like so many of his comrades before him, to the Red Ring of Death.

Xavier lived an honest life, always being there to banish boredom and melancholy whenever was required, asking only for a few updates and a well ventilated room in return. He shared in the toil of my efforts, the frustration of my failures, and the elation of my triumphs. While he may have been a construction of metal and plastic, through all those memories, stretched out across his long life-span, he became something more to me. He became a creature of true soul, a companion, a friend.

He will never be forgotten. While life shall go on, and newer, shinier, 'better' models shall be acquired, I fear it will not be the same.

So this is my Eulogy to him. God speed Xavier, may you rest in peace.

*Ahem* Yes, so, discussion value: In these modern times where new models are rendered obsolete and replaced quicker than ever (with the apparent exception of the current generation of consoles) what is the longest you have ever held onto a single piece of tech? Have/Did you, during that time, ever feel that, to you personally, it had become more than just a machine? Also, if we are talking in the past tense, how did you feel when you were forced to say goodbye?

(P.S. For those who may not recognise it and may now be itching to tell me to grow a pair, I am dramatizing this a little, and am not in genuine grief because my Xbox is bricked. However, I won't deny that I will always associate a lot of memorable moments and highly charged emotions with that console. I was genuinely surprised at how moved I was, which led me to the realisation that, yes, it did mean more to me than just the sum of its parts.)

oh yeah my xbox died and was replaced before that so maybe its not as long as i think it was can't recall all the details

Thank you, you are too kind. :)

At least I still have my laptop, if that went too I really would be depressed right now.

I've always regretted letting my brother have sole ownership of our PS2 when he went off to Uni. A lot of good memories from that as well, and they did last...

Mind you, I spent enough time on my Xbox as it was, with a PS2 in the mix as well I'd have never got any work done.

Anyway, I once had a phone that lasted me 4 years. I don't see the point of getting a new flashier phone when the one I use is perfectly fine.

Hmm... the oldest piece of tech I've owned...

Well, you know those big, ugly brick gameboys? Basically one of the first gameboys ever made? I had one of those for 15 years. I got some nostalgia feelings to play it one day, so I dug it out of my draw and went to turn it on...
and it didn't turn on. Seems I accientally left the batteries in it, which after a few years of not being payed attention to decided to leak battery acid into the gameboy's surprisingly delicate hardware, completely corroding all of it's electronics and rendering it unplayable. I felt bad man - that thing had seen a lot of punishment in it's time, so seeing it die because of my forgetfulness just... cut me deep.

Thankfully Gameboy Advances can play old-school Gameboy games, but it's just... not the same. The magic's gone, and ain't no way it's ever coming back.
15 years? Wow. I know we've still got a Game Boy Advance around here somewhere. No idea if it still works though. I was never much into hand-helds as I discovered.

Thanks. That's true for me as well, my phones getting on a bit now by phone standards, but it still does everything I want it to do and the contract is a friggin' steal, so why should I replace it?

Mind you, it does seem like half the apps or updates for existing apps on the HTC store are now no longer compatible with my model, so I probably could do with a change.

I still own a fully working Spectrum.

Although it hasn't seen much use since the early 90's.

Trying to remember, but i cant think of any piece of tech that i had break on me.

My 6 year old candybar phone, still working, got it replaced with a fancy new smartphone. Its now living the rest of its life as a GSM garage door opener.

Had an old digital watch, owned for 6 years, lost during an unfortunate camping trip. My current analogue one is coming up to 7 years, 2 battery changes.

I am fairly sure that my Playstation 1 still works, maybe not the controllers. And my gameboy mini too.

I tend to replace my gear before they break....

I'm probably showing my nerd-embryo status in embarrassing fashion here, but what is a Spectrum?

6 years is a good run for a 360. I gave up on mine. In 5 years of ownership I had 6 consoles fail on me.

4 died from RROD - due to overheating. I even made custom fan kits to improve cooling and still failed.
1 decided it wanted to try and make friends with three dvd's. It pressed the laser assembly up so far it gouged the disks. M$ nearly refused to accept the problem till I took it to a certified repair facility and they verified the issue.

last one the HDMI port failed and M$ did repair it but I sold it as soon as I got the replacement in.

6? In 5 years? Were you like, cursed or something?

Out of the people I know the most failures that have happened to any one person is 3.

hmmm

i still have an original gameboy kicking around here somewhere (screen fell off and the buttons are kinda dodgy), a GBA that i still use, Gamegear, sega Nomad (best handheld EVAR!), sega saturn that still works, and one of those sega cd/genesis combos that is about as big as a cd player (i think)

6 years is a long time for a 360, most people would thank their lucky stars for their 360 to last 2.

This isn't exactly my longest lasting piece of tech, but I bought one of those LG Chocolate phones at launch, and the damn thing still works. I don't use it anymore, I traded up to an Android smartphone, but my dad uses it now, after his last phone crapped out on him after only 2 months of use.

So yeah, I have a cellphone that's been working for 6 years without a single problem or defect. I'd say that's pretty damn impressive in this day and age.

Nice. I still have a late model C=64, although the FDD is getting noiser and noiser as the years go on. I used to have the Commodore Monitor, but that died, luckily for me my dad bought a C=64 to VGA converter that I can borrow.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I didn't have too much trouble fixing my 360 when it red ringed, although I don't really trust it anymore so I don't really use it for anything but dvds anymore, I have a gaming pc so I don't miss much anyway.
