I would say I ain't seen shit. Or that I was high and don't remember. They can't persecute you for refusing to testify.

I would never rat out a friend.
Actually, witness is obliged to tell the truth. If you don't tell the truth (or don't say anything at all), you will get punished. In Poland it's up to 3 years in jail.

(snip)... I wouldn't grass on my friends but in the actual police station etc....I think I'd crack.
Yeah I'am with you, I would never rat a friend out, that's just how things are.

But in the cop shop, with everyone looking at you, judging you, waiting on you....that's a lot of pressure...

Well this is vague. I don't even know why he did it. Let's say he beat the crap out of someone and put him in the hospital to get the guy's wallet. Of course I would report him.

On the other hand, I might just help if I knew the a-hole he beat up had it coming. Anyone who denies they would do the same is a liar. If you knew this guy was molesting neighborhood kids, killing them, and burying them in the back yard, you would even do worse than this. Might have to burn his house down Nightmare on Elm Street style.

that would be very subjective, the severity of the crime, for what reason the crime was committed, and the friend, though I am a Lawful-Neutral person it would depend on alot, though I would most likely testify as long as I am not caught up in the backlash of the adjudication.

I agree with most of the people on this thread, it depends on why he/she did the crime and what the crime in question was.

Well you stated the victim is in the hospital, so we can assume it was a severe crime.

So would I turn them in?
I'd probably talk to them first to try to get the to turn themselves in.
Failing that? I'm not sure. If the police came to me I wouldn't lie.
I probably would turn them in, in time.

Being my friend doesn't matter if they are committing violent, hospital inducing crimes. Being my friend doesn't exempt them from the law. What about the victims friends? What if they got revenge? Wouldn't my friend's family and such want those people to be brought to justice?

No, I would turn them in if they didn't turn themselves in.

If it was something small, something that would only put them in jail for a few days, then I would rat on them out of spite, because I expect no less from them.

Hell no. That's not to say that I wouldn't take issue with something terrible like rape or murder, but I would not rat them out.

I would talk it out with them and try to get my head round whatever they did, but otherwise I keep my mates out of prison. Plus, I owe several of them for covering up three murders and an abduction.

Depends on the severity of the crime. Very minor things, I propably would claim I didn't see anything. But a "real" crime? Yes I would.
Well the victim is in hospital does that count as "real" or do you mean if its permanent damage (mental or physical)

Depending on the friend I would ask why (s)he did it. If (for example) (s)he did it because (s)he had a really shitty day (going through a divorce, lost job, family member died etc) and someone rubbed him/her wrong (coming onto him/her after repeated times to stop) and shklee flipped then that would be a good reason not to testify against shkler. But if shklee does it on a daily basis then of course I would. It depends on why, if it has happened before, and if she is putting out.

Context context context.

You can't just say 'what would you do if...'

You need to know how long you've known your friend.
What they've done.
Why they did it.
If it hurt anyone and if so, how much?
What was the person who got hurt like?
Does your friend realise you saw them?
Why do you like your friend?
How long ago was it?

And that's just the tip of the iceburg.

Then you have to take into account personal life experiences and ideology.

Essentially, every decision takes into account more than what the question asks.
