Eve...is it worth it?

When I first saw ads for eve, they seems like spam ads, so I ignored them.

Then I saw videos of eve traiers, and I ignored them.

Then I talked to friends, and they had mixed views, so I ignored them.

Then I played it.....Wow.

I don't mean wow like, what have I been missing. I mean wow as in are there ENOUGH buttons to click. Enough menus to go through to get to what you want. One friend told me he played for a few months, thought he had a good ship, them came up to one so big in comparrison it blocked out the stars to him and he had thought he glitched. My question is, is the game worth playing and devoting time to? Can you go through doing as you want. Instead of doing the whole clan war thing can you be a trader, can I be an explorer, can I survive not doing the conquering thing it seems to want me to do from the demo. And finally, am I ever going to use all these menus?

td;lr: Should I play Eve (like subscription wise) and why/why not? I currently play WoW if that means anything.

I tried it, it was all right, but it felt a bit dull as I'd just finished Freelancer.
Never got back into it.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't answer the question, I think that if you enjoy it, try it for a month or so doing whatever the hell you want to do for a bit of fun, and if it turns out a bit crap, don't renew the subscription.

It's mostly based around economics then the game itself. It takes some time to get used to it but it's pretty enjoyable when you do. But as I said, to get a lot of things you have to be good at economics.

eve is amazing characters name? btw if you played wow you are going to hate it when you get in PvP none of this rules and shit.. eve can be harsh and painful but its worth it, yes you can do all those things you say you want to, the ads make it look cool but are very rare to do those explody conquering things =P yes youll use menus

The hardest part of Eve is getting settled into it. It's during the first few months that most people burn out. This is often because they treat it like any other MMO and expect to be told what to do next and where to go. You can do whatever you want in Eve so it's a matter of going out and finding out what your niche is. There are many community based groups that have open enrollment that you can get started in. Ars Technica has one, I dunno if Escapist Magazine does. PC Gamer has one, etc. Go hang in Rens, Jita, Amarr, etc. and you'll easily find corps advertising for members (and people trying to scam you).

So yeah, stick with it, find a corp and you'll have a blast.

This is not true in the slightest. Only people who game the market have to be good at economics. If you're not a trader, then you don't have a whole lot to worry about. Just haul your shit to a place with decent buy orders and unload your stuff. My main is a 5 year old PVP toon and my 3 year old alt handles the PVE, at no point have I worried about market behavior and all that crap.

A Mercenary? Those two just came to mind because of my wanting to play Old Republic but they are good category names I suppose.

Yes and yes. There is a bounty system and locator agents that you can use to help track people down. There are also dedicated mercenary corps that you can join, but they tend to only take people with some prior PVP experience.

There's really not much you can't do in Eve. Trader, manufacturer, miner, mercenary, bounty hunter, security guard for an industrial corp, etc. etc. You can spend your time just running missions or spend your time scamming people. Right now I'm in a corp that operates out of a wormhole and we split our time between running sleeper plexes, roaming through low sec/0.0 randomly killing people, and sieging other people's Player Owned Stations so that we can steal their shit. We're basically space vikings that never know where we'll end up from day to day.

Eve is just a sandbox, whether you have fun or not is up to you.

0o so it's really not THAT relatable to wow is it? I mean WoW is a bit linear no? You are your class, you have 1 of 3 jobs, and you can make some gold if your a mage or have a good profession. Eve is more of...If you ever wanted to live in space, here you go and do whatever isn't it?

Eve is a different experience in MMO's compared to say WOW

You can take on many jobs and roles throughout New Eden, but it depends on your own choices, you can be a huge load of professions, all of them take time to improve at though.

The tutorials introduce you to most of the professions at a basic level, i'd recommend deciding early a job you want to be good at and specialise.

Take things easy when starting out though, Eve doesnt hold your hand and can be unforgiving if you decide to try something new - make sure you have a sufficient clone in safe space [high sec or empire] so you are fine if you lose a ship - it will happen

1 little rule though i'd offer is in high security space, don't shoot at anyone first, if someone targets you ignore them, Concord blasts the person who shoots first [i.e the agressor]

I'd advise against trying Bounty Hunting until you have a few friends and experience at Eve though, most of the really high Bounties are people who've been playing for years and have huge resources to defend themselves with [their own skills and powerful ships notwithstanding] this includes corp-mates, entire fleets of friends etc.

the reason some of those bounties are that high is that even getting close to the player in question is going to be worth a lot of lives and ships trying.

That said [this is a bit of an essay isnt it] enjoy Eve for what it is :a game which offers options for players, you can do whatever you want just be prepared for losses
