EVE Online is more than just a game. It's an investment. It takes a great deal of time and effort in order to make it into something worthwhile.

So if your average time spent with a game before you forget it ever existed is ~20 hours, then no; EVE Online is not for you.

So with this whole "pay from in the game" thing, how does that work?

Also, what is the difference between Eve Online and Eve Online Tyrannis?
The in-game payment system, known as Pilot's License EXtension (PLEX) allows players to buy 30-day allotments of game time redeemed through items of the same name. These items are bought using the in-game currency (ISK, or Inter Stellar Kredit). Currently, a PLEX runs for anywhere between 350-450 million ISK each (To most new players this seems like a lot of cash, but in reality, veteran players earn this amount minimum on a weekly basis).

PLEX are not seeded in the in-game market by the developers. PLEX are created when an EVE Online 60-day time code (which can be purchased from trusted sources for $30 each) is converted within the game itself into two 30-day PLEX items, which are then put on the market by the player who owns them.

Players should also take note that these PLEX can in fact be legally stolen from other players by attacking their ship when it is carrying a PLEX; provided it survives the ship's destruction, it can then be looted from the wreck.

Ahh Eve... every year you call me back, and every year you hurt me the same way...

I like Eve. I like the spaceships, the intricate market, the player based factions. But it really is a lot of work for not a lot of fun.

Try it out... if you like it, then good for you. As for me, well, I like to spend more time playing a game than preparing to play it.

Might have been said but here it goes.

Eve is one of those games where you love it or hate it. WoW is the kind of game where if you die you don't really lose much. Eve when you die you lose whatever was in the ship you were flying and if you get your escape pod (called pods) killed you lose whatever implants and you may lose skills. There is the risk/rewards to PVP. Now you may asked "What can I do with proffessions" and to that there really is none. You do whatever it is you want to do. Whatever ship you fly you can fit whatever you want to the thing (mostly) However there is guidelines to what ships should do due to what bonuses they have.

Most people are cut into 2 groups PVPers and Miners/Mission runners (carebears) however PVPers will do carebear things to make money so that really does not matter. And there are 3 basic places to go.
1) Highsec is basically the "Safe" starter zone where a lot of trade happens and missions are run. PVP can and does happen there due to suicide ganks and wardecs which is legal warfare in restricted zones.
2) Lowsec is Where pirates live, there are reprecussions when you attack players but people will attack you.
3) 0.0 here there are no rules other than the strongest rule and the weak either do as they are told or die.

Now you have to find a good corp or you may not enjoy the game. And you have to find people who are willing to teach you how to play. There is much to learn and even after like 4 years of gameplay I still don't know everything. Eve has one of the steepest learning curves in any MMO I have ever seen. But again the only way you will find out if you like the game is by playing it. I had to play it a few months before I decided if it was a good game for me and something to keep playing. The 14 day trial is nowhere near long enough for Eve.

are we referring to the glowey blue chemical used by splicers to shoot lightening and pain from their fingertips? - in which case, awesome.

are we talking of Adams third wife in the garden of Eden? - in which case, get in there!

or are we talking about that MMO that would have been awesome if you actually had say, freedom. on it. and if it was less WoWesque formulaic. - in which case, i was disappointed also.

Eve is a buggy, over-complicated mess with a corrupt development team who would rather spit in your face than fix their weird design decisions.

Now that that's out of the way I have to admit to having an active subscription, and enjoying it. It should never be hailed as anywhere close to perfect, and if you're used to the way Blizzard communicates with players then CCP are going to seem like the devil. But it is an MMO version of Elite, to which there are no real competitors, and no one who does it better. If you're enjoying it then it is worth its flaws and foibles. But be careful you're not just "Going to work" by opening the client.

Find the fun, and stick to it.

The best thing about Eve, in my opinion, is that when bored of one area you can skill up in another and go try that out. Personally I shift between missions/exploration/wormhole raiding/industry on a fairly random basis. Not many other MMOs let you jump your focus around like that and remain worthwhile.

Oh, and find a good like-minded Corporation to join. As in all MMOs, being in a group enhances the fun by a factor of ten at least. If you're playing Eve solo, well, you're not playing the real game.

now qoutes...

WoW holds your hand from 1-80, and makes sure you get a cookie regardless if you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place.
Is WoW hated in the "hardcore MMO" community, or do people just think it is easy?

I play WoW. WoW is easy, but not at first, with most new things you feel lost and overtime you get better at it.

well yes but feeling lost and having a guy blow you up and take all your stuff are two different ends of a really shit covered stick...

i will however admit that to begin WoW is pretty ok to start with

One more time then off to bed:

What is the difference between Eve Online and Eve Online Tyrannis? Besides that one is one steam, unless that means that steam has its own Eve server, which is a big thing to point out

There is no difference - Eve Online is the name of the game, Tyrannis is the name of what was until yesterday the most recent Eve Online expansion. Incursion being the newest one.

It's a step above all the other mmo's, in terms of its learning curve and difficulty.

I played it for a while, a while being the trial. Didn't like it so I left it.

People were mean to me :(

I'd rather be lost and be hated in the eyes of the "hardcore mmo" community then play a game that (based on what you're saying) can cause that level of frustration.

Although I have always been interested in Eve...

I found I couldn't get started til I found a corporation to support me, but once I got into it I made a good living doing solo stuff. I setup a lab making and improving blueprints, and I spent most of the time cruising around in my tiny little exploration ship, finding hidden spawns and minerals belts and selling the locations. Got to be pretty well known in a small corner of 0.1-0.3 space and no one would attack me cause they knew I was fair and selling good intel. It paid for my subscription and the fuel to keep my lab running.

And some days, I'd join the corp in a big hunt and run an interceptor or EW ship for the fleet. Or run hauler on a mining op. There's always a huge list of diff things you can do.

I also had a ton of other ships, cuisers, interdictors, recon, battlecruisers, and a few big battleships too, but I don't find those nearly as much fun to fly. I like the little fast advanced frigates, preferably with a cloaking device.

Sadly, I haven't been able to play for ages, stuck out in the boonies on a job, only have internet at work.

Just get a job as a chartered accountant while you play a space sim. It's basically the same thing.
This, basically. I've tried to get into Eve three times, because the basic game idea seems really awesome.

But, ya know... it turns out that it's just another JOB. That you have to pay for. (Thanks ZP). And you grind your sorry gamer ass to death. And then some complete and utter bastard comes into trade-hub and blows your ship up for lulz or whatever.

And I AM a chartered accountant, so I know what I'm talking about! :p

I have a friend who swears by it, but I am resistant go games like that. The ones that theoretically can take up an infinite amount of your time. If you're into that kind of game, maybe.
