These epic events in EVE always make for a good read, but considering my last experience playing it I don't think i'd go back just for stuff like this.

hmmm well hopefully there connected enough to reform themselves fast and take back there zones
Heh, you don't get EVE do you. Every Alliance in EVE is trying to take their space. BoB is too unorganized and weak to fight off the Alliances that they used to trample all over. They have no defenses, just their ships. They can't prevent capital ships from jumping right into their core systems anymore, they're totally vulnerable. If they can reform, they'll only be a shadow of their former selves.
So it's more like the US government collapsing, and with it their most powerful weapons system, then every government from China to Canada claims their own little piece?
We still have nuclear/biological/chemical weapons. If we lose, the human race loses. Dont think that because we love our freedom, and "good/right" morality that we will not resort to killing everyone else with us, because if we will. We are just that evil.

EvE died for me when it started to take 4 months to train 5 skills.

Only in EVE can you have one guy click about for two minutes and destroy several years of work by thousands of players.
Well, cept reality :p

I'm wondering if this is the biggest such event in an MMO ever?
What about that big plague in World of Warcraft (not the zombies)? How many people were affected by that, does anyone know?
That "plague" was a one time event and it was local. This will effect New Eden (EVE's universe) for months. More people have been affected by this than there are people per server in WoW.

Seems very interesting form a social and V.R. studies point of view. But also like really fucking stupid game design, why should one man be able to disband an entire structure like this?

Wow.

As epic as that sounds, if I really think about it, it's no more than extremely brutal trolling. Still incredibly interesting how an MMO actually has politics however.
No, its a military victory. They have defeated Band of Brothers. Thats like saying that NATO trolled Afghanistan in 2001.

My EVE Name is the same name as my account name on the Escapist. Send me a message, you can join my corp. We're very newb friendly.

Jesus Christ, Band of Brothers is just gone? I never thought I'd see the day this would happen, but here we are.

EVE is going to be a mad house for the next couple of weeks. BoB owned a very large chunk of space in the EVE universe and now that they can't defend it anymore all bets are off. Every last Alliance and Corporation that BoB has ever screwed over or taken space from is going to rush into their territory guns blazing. It will be all out war.

Keeping with the analogy, think of what will happen as the US collapsing and then every nearby nation running in to claim it's land, starting a war between not only what's left of the Americans but also each other. This will be an interesting time for the game indeed...

The game costs 20 euro to play, per month.

21 days and then I'm out, if not earlier.
no, its 20 euro for the first month, 15 after. You can pay in dollars but I think the cheapness we get in the UK for that is mitigated by the exchange rates.
Any company that charges EU more than US for no reason (we pay more than 15 euro - VAT), and favorise UK over other countries (even ones that won't use euro for another 3 years or more) won't get my money.

I'm looking at you too, Valve.
They are a business, they do whatever it takes to make profits, with the notable exception of making bad games. The UK is the second largest games market in the world, after the US (I think), so even if it is harsh on other countries, you can't really blame Valve.

Should I be worried that the challenging of these entrenched power structures on such a large scale is turning me on?

I'm almost tempted to get back to the game. :3

-they had won almost every single out right war to date

i suppose you are going by the "wasn't destroyed and survived = win" methodology here.

-Sound spretty insane and unfair that one single player can cause such a shit storm.

life isn't fair, the world isn't fair, the game, a product of the previous two pretty much isn't fair either. then again, one single person can still cause a massive shit storm here in reality. here are a few, Napoleon, Henry VIII, Stalin, and Hitler.

-Well isent this something new, i guess that BoB will remake soon enough, bigger and better, they've dissapeard befor, and came back, SHame the there MAX Strat dident work to well, Shame on Goonswarm, not only are they a bunch of bad sports, but they'd stoop this low, "We'll never be like bob....ever" Sorry Goon, your worse, if this is what GS need to do to get on top, im a sure a GM or 2 Will roll it back a week. if not, then the system is balls'd up so yeah, i'v played gor about 2 years on/off and tbh im going off it, this is just another spanner in the works, for bob, but as i said, if the GMs dont roll it back, becuase of this one guy then all is infact lost.

ahahahhahahahahahahhaha, in short, No.
In long, i doubt most of the BoB vet players really care anymore about getting back together, now is the prime opportunity for them to get out and start their own things. I'm sure a few of the corps will clump up together again but overall most will use this turn of events as a launch pad for their own initiatives. Why you'd spit on GS for getting the job done is funny though, especially in defense of BoB. In the end, BoB as a entity, like all entities eventually do, died, in this case of a massive brain aneurysm.

My thoughts exactly. This will shake things up within EVE, but surely there must have been some kind of procedure or feature in place that would stop one man from causing so much havoc?

I don't know whether this is genius, or bad game design. It gives players an amazing amount of freedom, but at a huge cost.

I guess its a good time to get into EVE. I've never even thought of joining it, but now it sounds like a time of absolute chaos and opportunity. Who knows? Dragon Age: Origins and Empire: Total War don't come out for a month...

Tis a good time to start playing. I'd liken this more to a massive reset while all customers keep their stuff. I haven't played EVE, but this kind of thing should happen more often in MMO's.
would you still say that when you realise you spent $400 worth of subscribtion fee on somebody elses 5 min of fun?

The schadenfreude I'm feeling here is like a delicious dark chocolate. Countless hours that were lost to an MMO are now lost even more, the false sense of accomplishment stripped away.

Okay, in case some of you guys still aren't quite getting it, I have a map outlining the current Alliance division of power.

First of all, take notice of that massive list of names along the left side of the map. Three-fourths of the names of that list claim to be part of the Band of Brothers. That's what's left of the Alliance. Small cells of resistance that will probably be destroyed one by one.

Now, looking at the map itself trace your finger from a green chunk of space under the list owned by an Alliance called Suns of Tangra, which is in the middle of the map on the left edge. Draw an imaginary line from that Alliance to an orange one called Curatores Veritatis Alliance down to the right. Now look at the shape of the borders the Alliances below it have in relation to the empty space to it's left. Before this fall last night Band of Brothers owned that entire region of space. Skunk Works and Executive Operations didn't use to be there, they were just the first to take advantage of the situation and immediately conquered what used to be the core of BoB territory.

Is the scale of this starting to sink in now, people?

Haha, that made me laugh. I don't really see the appeal of playing the same MMO every day for years and years, but at least entertainment like this comes from it ^-^
