EVE Online: Worth buying?

So by now, most of us have heard of EVE online. From what I can see, it is a space sim that deals more with slow, sort of boring gameplay, set in a large, beautiful universe. It seems to be geared toward more hardcore players that have plenty of time to put into playing, and for that reason it's not as appealing to as wide an audience as, say, World of Warcraft. Sure, WoW is all about the grind, but this game appears to be more about exploring and earning money than anything.

I've played the demo, but I really can't say much, as I only managed to get a few hours in total. Basically, what I want to ask is, what is your opinion of EVE Online, and is it worth buying and paying for?

The world seems indeed huge, however I could not ever get past the repatativness or boring combat. I've heard mining in Eve is probably more boring than randomly throwing pencils at the wall during detention.

But hey, if you like go for it.

If you're not into free market economics, EVE probably isn't for you.

Even if you are, the learning curve is murder.

Probably one of the better MMOs but it is still an MMO and can get repetitive. At least you can level without playing.

Well, isn't there like a weeks trial still? I know there was one at the very least, becaue I played it. I didn't like it myself, but it gives you a small piece what the game is about.

edit: oh, you played the trial, sorry >_< ermmm... well, I didn't like it, but give it a try if your still curious.

Just watch the Zero Punctuation review.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Benjamin Croshaw(sp?) is not god. He writes funny reviews, but he's not exactly the number one source for good information about video games.

I like EVE and am a long time player. It´s one of the very few MMOs where you can play a few hours a week and not lose anything also you can be useful in pvp as soon as you create your character (and you can pay for your subscription with in-game money).
You mentioned to slow gameplay ans sure some parts of it are slow but the pvp is fast and dangerous.
If you or someone else decides to give it a try they can contact me and I'll gladly explain things and answer your in-game questions,my characters name is Nasferty.

Depends on what you're looking for in a game. The gameplay in EVE is as boring as yahtzee describes, and if you just want a game to play by yourself and you judge your gaming by the interface, absolutely look elsewhere.

However, EVE has one of the most sophisticated political environments I have ever seen produced in a game. In the past month one of the largest alliances, Goonswarm, wrapped up their war with the other of the largest alliances, Kenzoku (previously BoB). That war lasted a year. Now that they've defeated them, they now hold control of a couple entire regions of space. You say you've played the demo, so you have an idea of how much territory that entails. That is just two alliances out of hundreds, maybe even thousands.

EVE is set in a ruthless, cut-throat universe, and short of the worst cases of griefing the newbies, CCP will never step in when a player screws another player over. So thieves, pirates and spies are common. So when you leave station, there is always a risk, and that risk never comes from the NPCs. It's always from other players. One of the best sayings that I've heard in EVE is "If you're in EVE and you find yourself in a fair fight you're not playing correctly." So the universe truly is entirely open to be played the way you want to play.

So while the combat with NPCs is boring as watching paint dry, (and mining is far, far worse), combat with other players is the most exciting I have ever experienced. Bar none. I have yet to find a FPS that even comes close to the adrenaline rush of hunting down and killing another EVE player.

Another thing worth mentioning is that EVE tops the charts for games for people with social lives. This might seem contradictory. But the fact that you can queue up 24 hours of skills to train (plus there are many skills that take up to weeks to complete), you can only put in a couple hours every couple days and still keep up to your friends in game. I often get sent out of town for weeks on end for work, yet I can keep my character relevant in EVE. There are a number of people with families that I play with and they're in the same boat. They can play as long as their lives will allow and yet when they log in, their character has continued to grow.

A mate of mine was part of the Goonfleet for a while. Spend two weeks beefing up a crappy ship, join a hundred others and go hunt down someone who just spent $500 real money on an in-game ship. Apparently, knowing that somewhere on earth a fat little social mutant is flailing his flabby little arms about, while tears of nerd rage stream down his face, makes victory all the sweeter.

People say EVE is boring and slow... it is possible to fly a cruiser by your second day of playing. While only actually logging on and playing the game for a few hours.
To put things in perspective size-wise, let's say that the starting ship is the size of a bottlecap. A cruiser is the relative size of the bottle.
Fun fact: by the same comparison, a Titan is the size of a house.
No joke.
Now that is huge. I want to buy this, because I can just train skills during the day, and when I played the demo, the learning curve was no problem for me at all. Anyone else got any opinions?

I believe so. It costs quite a bit, but if you work hard enough, you can probably make enough in a month to pay for next month.

The game takes some getting used to. It starts off slow but its gets better the more skills you train. A must is to find a good corp (guild) to get the most out of the game.

The learning curve is extremely high though so watch out

You just won the internet.

Yep. If you are very wealthy you can buy time cards from players for 500m-600m ISK. Its a secure trade so you can't get scammed.

EDIT: Also if you are good at poker you can play on a fan site that gives out ISK if you win, of course you need to put your own ISK so you can risk losing millions even billions.
Is 500M ISK a lot? I know the game has billionaires...
