I was wondering has anyone here ever played a game obsessively for many, many hours for weeks on end, not willing to stop, even once you've asked yourself "why do I even play this game?" and unable to come up with an answer?

For me, it's been Harvest Moon for the Gameboy SP. I spent weeks/months playing that, constantly just waking up in the morning, cutting down tree stumps, collecting milk and eggs to slowly but surely build a small fortune to buy a bigger house. But I honestly can't think to this day why I cared less about getting a bigger house.

Anyone?

Yeah, when a games being particuarly bad I ask myself that.
Then when I can't find a satisfactory answer I just turn it off

Animal Crossing.... I spent 50+ hours playing that game, and to this day I still couldn't tell you why.

World of Warcraft.

Its a drain on money, a social destroyer, and a devourer of souls.

So why do I like it so much?!
Reminds me of this:

OT: I can't remember ever having that moment, probably because I've never bothered with MMOs

Oh wait, Diablo II...

The Sims, all of them.
any fighting game.
NFS: Undercover and Shift.
GTA: Vice City.
Test Drive 6 and Off Road 2.
Star Wars Battlefront 1.
Superstar Racing, an open-wheel racing mmog.
Give me time and I'll think of more.

Jackass the Game would be here if it wasn't for one thing, making the idiots hurt themselves really is quite fun.

The Sims. So many wasted afternoons...and for what? I could have cheated my way to it all so easily!

Only with Call of Duty 4. I was playing it at release, enjoying the multiplayer, but now I can't go back to the online because I realized how ball-breakingly frustrating it is to grind 55 levels.

I got an off road racing game and I liked playing the easy tracks, but then the tracks got more difficulty and did so in a very cheep manner usually by installing jumps right before 90 degree turns. Thus the chances of a horrible failure on that turn were greatly increased. I originally got the game to casually waste 5 minutes for when more in depth games were not an option. However after a few controller throwing tantrums I asked the question "Why do I even play this game" and after realizing I had no good answer I quit.

Same here. I played that game for six months straight.

Some others for me would have to be The Sims and Forza 2. I spent hours playing those games. Why? I have no idea. They were fun, but I was basically doing the same thing over and over again.

It's happened a few times with World of Warcraft. I got over it though.

I've felt that way about Harvest Moon. It doesn't even give me the satisfaction I get from building neighborhoods out over long periods of time in a Sims game or building large regions in SimCity 4 (which, let's face it, can get really cookie-cutter if you're not careful). It's just "build farm, marry anime chick, lather, rinse, play again." I want a game that gives me something tangible for my efforts.
