On first time playing a single player campagain I never listen to my own music always the orginal soundtrack would be like going to the cinema and listening to my ipod.

On-line shooters ect its metal and hard rock all the way. And fight night its the rock sound tracks, god only knows why they didt just use that anyway they were never gunna come up with better
I definetly agree with your first point, some games espically long running RPG's it can be fun to try a pick a song to match the mood

I almost always have my own music on while playing games. Especially Fallout 3 & New Vegas.
Fallout 3, some of the songs on GNR were good, so I jut listened to that sometimes. New Vegas, none of the music is to my tastes, so I listen to my own.
Not even "The ranger with the big iron on his hiiiiip..." I love that song, also the spurs song that was awsome

For important boss battles. I play Final Fantasy X's battle theme(sucky game, great music). For games with zombies or zombie-like creatures (Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc.), I have the Undead Nightmare soundtrack playing. Sets the mood perfectly in the subways of D.C.

I usually listen to music only when I'm playing strategy games. With the sheer amount of hours put into Europa Universalis III even its awesome soundtrack gets boring after hour 6

I almost always listen to music when I play Starcraft: Brood War. But I keep the in-game audio audible. Using sound cues to keep things flowing helps a lot.

I'm still trying to figure out a good playlist for SCBW. I have a weird composition of dnb(mostly liquid, though I'm trying to balance it out), dubstep, ambient, *electronic and some neurofunk.

It helps my APM(sort of..). And I just enjoy listening to music so why not ^.^

With most single player games, except maybe Diablo-like games, I don't listen to music though.

*read: songs I'm not sure what to call.

I do especially when I'm playing a handheld console. I did manage to match up El Tango De Roxanne from Moulin Rouge with the scene where Monitor goes a lil kooky in Halo 3...I'll never be able to watch that cutscene again without laughing...XD

almost always. Megaman requires an infusion of Linkin Park (although I don't normally like them), Source Games need HIM or Breaking Benjamin-esque sounds, RTS cries out for glam/hair metal. The occasional classic rock tune is always well accepted too.

if there isn't a story or there aren't any cut scenes, or maybe i've played it a lot before, yeah. mostly because it gets my blood pumping if i'm listening to the right music, then i start to play better

I could only listen to music when I'm playing a sports game, like FIFA or Tiger Woods. In anything else it's just distracting.

Far cry 2- playing "circle of life" you know from the lion king, is both hilarious and epic
I need to try this.

As for myself, it depends on the game. Most games I'll use the in-game soundtrack or music. I generally listen to it when playing MMOs, Civilization V or Minecraft. Just stuff that doesn't require your complete attention really.

Also, for what its worth, this goes incredibly well with EVE Online, particularly on he mission of the same name. :D
