Anyway, yes, I often find myself arguing with people who think the definition of "fact" is "whatever I think is right," which causes me massive and irreparable brain damage as I try to refrain from unleashing bone-melting, God-killing, skin-flaying rage upon them.

Release your rage upon them Max. Its for the good of the hum... I mean you... its for the good of you.

And I have done it. It's great fun, and the look on their faces after you ripped down, tortured, and murdered their arguments is priceless.

One of my friends said Monkey Island was a bad game. That ticked one of my nerves. You do NOT talk about Monkey Island like that in front of me.
Not only that, he had never played it, he simply dismissed it because it was old.
For further information, this friend calls himself a "gamer", but has a PS2 which he never uses, thinks FF7 is the best game ever, and the only games on his PC are Crysis, Crysis Warhead and Crysis Wars.

I've done it several times, with most people I meet on a daily basis in school have the intellect and depth of a two-dimensional boy from the caveman era.

Take this for example: I was talking to a friend of mine (he's not an idiot really, but he talked so dearly about something he doesn't even have any bloody information about), and we were arguing over good game series. For some weird reason, he thinks that every FPS the latest years are ripping off Halo 3, and he doesn't even own a 360, he's only played parts of the multiplayer with me and some friends, and he hasn't even seen that many FPS's.

Doesn't it strike anyone as a blind shot for someone to accuse Rainbow Six Vegas 2, a tactical modern-day shooter on Earth, with normal army weapons, fighting some secret organization or something (haven't played through the game), to be a rip-off of Halo 3, an FPS with purple, weird-shaped weapons set 500 years in the future, where you fight against some big alien cult that believe that rings equals gods? It's like comparing Gears of War to Doom! I know that it's fun to argue, but if you haven't got information about any games, you already know that you will lose against someone who's played games his entire life! This is just like categorizing an entire game genre as a ripoff of the first game IN the genre! Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to hit my head with a frying pan.

Um, it IS ripping off of Halo. Have you ever played the original Rainbow Six games? NOTHING like RSV. The original games had no regenerating health, no 1-on-30 terrorist hunts, and a hell of a lot more weapon and ammo loadout selections.

That's one of the biggest things I've seen Yahtzee be right about: games are trying to be like Halo (even if it's subconscious). I feel bad for not reading the thread before posting, but you are accusing your friend of being an idiot, and he isn't exactly wrong. There is a lot more to "being like Halo" than just the space-age setting. Gameplay mechanics, weapon selections (it doesn't matter if they are spitting plasma or bullets if they do the same thing functionally), health systems, grenade mechanics, and melee options all come into play when making a FPS. If more than a few match Halo closely, he's got an argument.

I get factual evidence to back up my points and they simply dismiss the whole thing once they've lost as "not important anyway."

I used to argue with idiots a lot but ultimately found it not worth the effort, so nowadays I usually just browse the forums and move on and only post if know I can piss someone off royally in an eloquent and intellectual manner. This is one of my rare posts which isn't primarily meant to annoy.
