Recently I've been reminiscing the my time in EVE-online. I remember the good times I had playing it. But I quit, because when I really got involved, I could hardly call it a relaxing game anymore. It seems like it's all or nothing with EVE.
Anyone else have good memories and having doubts about playing EVE again?

I play it on and off.
I do remember the fun times, mission running etc. but there are times when you have to really work at it. I got told off IRL because I didn't leave the game when my dinner was ready, me and a few corp members were flying through low sec and got bubbled.

I read about the guy whole sold all of his guild's (or whatever they are called in EVE Online)game credits for like fifty grand, or something. Does that count?

I played for three and a half years and quit a couple months ago. The game is just getting too god damn bloated with the crap CCP keeps tossing in, and the player base just keeps getting shittier. It's hard to get anything done without dealing with blobs in one form or another, and frankly, I just want to be a maurading space viking, something that really can't be done without a hundred friends to back you up.

I had good times, no doubt about that. I fought with both BoB and The Coalition, helped Goon invade NOL (which resulted in getting banned for three days due to BoB's cheap tricks), and generally had some really awesome fun with people who I'll know for a long while after quitting.

Sounds like you had some great adventures. I played in a smaller corp that was't a part of one of the big powerhouses in EVE. Though we tried to manage a small alliance, but after a while everyone burned out :)That was dissapointing :p

And to everyone's reply which contains: 'Does that count?'..NO (but thanx for the effort).

I got as far as owning a few hulks (backups since I got pirated a bunch) and a few of those "HOLY GODDAMN WTF THAT'S A HUGE SHIP!" sized ships. Not the titan things but a rank or two below. I forget names.

At any rate, I look at EvE online as sort of an enigma. It is a game that I like more when I think about it rather than when I actually play it. Playing it is kind of like punching my own asshole...at least in theory...the idea being that I feel really stupid for doing it and after I'm just sore and embarassed that I spent my time on such a nonsensical endeavor.

EVE is one of the best MMOs on the market, in my opinion. However, it does cater to a particular type of gamer and, sadly, I'm just not one of them. I want to enjoy playing it, but I quickly get tired of dealing the motions of skills, ISK gain, and upgrading ships. It's all slow and the differences are hard to notice in the short run. And I usually just want to play in a big corporation and fight in a war, but it would be months before I had the ship and skills to be any use.

Which is why I'm all excited for Dust 514. If I can't deal with being a pilot, I want to try being a marine. It looks like Planetside for the EVE universe and that makes my pants area tingle.

Hehe, you mean a Freighter or something? Your statement that it's more a thinking game than anything else (except maybe socialising, if you find some chattable people that is) is very recognizable (and eloquently put). The possibilities to create your own saga are right there... But, like in real life: not everyone can be a star. The amount of stuff you need to know and keep track of is almost overwhelming (maybe I'm just not smart enough.)

Why did everyone who finished their post with "does that count?" get a probation?

OT I've never played EVE but I've heard it's very political, which I don't think I'm up to.

Must.....resist urge to end post with "does that count"? xD

The OP had a serious topic of discussion that was mocked by numerous people, all repeating off each other. The trolls were put down.

Agreed that's what I thought when I first saw the Dust 514 trailer

My time with EVE was amazing, I loved every bit of it but real life came into the picture and when I realized that I was putting EVE in front of things like schoolwork and working at my job I realized I needed to cut back and when I cut back on my time I just began to lose interest. If I had the free time and money to go back to it I would in a heartbeat but right now it isn't financially possible for me

I hope I don't get suspended or probation for this...

But I played 3 trial accounts, each with different factions (Gallente, Caldari, and then Minmatar), and the one I had the most fun with was the Caldari one because I got picked up by some corp who liked to give new players 3 million ISK in the hopes that they might join the game and work with the corp.

I got to be a tackler in this awesome fight, shit was so cash. I didn't realize that even someone who can only fly frigates can still help in such a huge battle...musta been 40 people on vent...

I really liked it, but didn't know anyone else who played it aside from a friend who recommended I try a trial account and he quit before I ever got around to it...And I didn't wanna just start over when I already have other MMOs and not enough time as is.

I've played it on and off for several years, and I still play it from time to time. My problems with EVE Online are as follows:

  • - The player community is dominated by aggressive PvP players who equip the best combat ships and travel in gangs. Any hapless person the gang encounters is usually dead without standing a chance.

    - Combat is very unforgiving for the lone player, forcing anyone who wants to survive an attack to join a group. This makes it dangerous to play alone or just jump in a game for a few minutes without trying to hook up with a bunch of other people for safety.

    - NPC combat is completely different from PvP combat, meaning that even good NPC combat players (ratters) will usually get owned by a PvP player equipped for PvP combat.

    - The mechanics of the game world funnels everyone through choke points (gates) which destroys some of the immersion of piloting a ship in deep space and creates perfect conditions for PvP players to gate camp other players.

i used a free trial but i didnt want to get it because its really just a spreadsheet-fest and because i think it ruined one of my friends lives for almost 2 years, he would sit there glued too the screen saying he was having fun... strangly i didnt believe him...

I played it for about 3 months when it first came out, but i got bored of it after awhile, went back numerous times including a two month stint recently, like the OP i found that after awhile it became more then just a game, i guess it is like they say, that it's Eve-23/7.

I played the trial twice. The first time I amassed an impressive amount of money (at least I think so) for a first-timer.
I transferred most of this money to a temporary friend I had gained ingame to get it over to my other trial (he didn't scam me...I was surprised). The second time I knew what to do, trained the appropriate skills or however that worked, and got a really nice ship which was nicely equipped. I met an under-equipped pirate and died horribly without ever hitting him with my doom-ray that was worth just about as much as my ship, and could probably destroy the poor bugger in two hits. It was not because of incompetence that I didn't manage to kill this pirate, oh no. I was in the perfect range from the other ship by my weapon specifications. I had quite a big hull, and nice shields to go with. The damned pirate comes in with some missiles and something that disables your warp engines (and it severely cripples your defensive and offensive abilities if you have it and it's activated!) and utterly destroys me. I shoot at the other ship. more times than I can count, yet it never even grazes the other ship.

I called bullshit and never played again.

Edit: I think that's the one time I've truly ragequit a game.

You fell victim to something known as traversal velocity. His ship was moving too fast and had too small a signature for your uber-cannon to track him, and thus could never score a hit. (Yes, the game is THAT deep.)

I feel your pain though.

I played EVE for close to 4 years, good times. But yes I will agree with you that it is a lot of effort to get somewhere (all or nothing) and I didn't have the time for it. Honestly, in terms of possesions in that game I had about as much as a person could get in a quarter of the time, that and i didn't train learning skills until maybe 2 years in, i was totally out of it. Saying all of this has actually changed my opinion on the game now...
