First of all I am sure that it wasn't Grand Theft Auto that encouraged this inhumane act of violence. This guy is obviously some coward dick head who couldn't refrain from beating up his girlfriends kid. Now dont get me wrong, I would be pretty pissed off if my GTA save file was deleted, as i'm sure you guys would, but to put an 8 year old in a coma? This guy should be shot, repeatedly.

Now, news articles like this put a bad reputation on gamers, and the developers of such games. Forever in a day this 'media vs gamers/publishers' argument will be discussed.

What are your thought's on this, guys?

PTSD?

Didn't read the article but that's the impression I get from the "ex-soldier" part.

I blame the videogame, not the traumatic and life altering events that can come with being a soldier.

Immediately after seeing "Daily Mail" I'm a little sceptical.
But I'm a poncy Guardian reader, what do I know about this kind of thing?

Jesus Christ the details are pretty brutal. That kind of abuse is different from being in a bad mood to begin with and then snapping. If it was something like he gave the kid a black eye then immediately apologized and realized how much of a jackass he was, I would say it may have been an isolated incident (though still worthy of punishment). But this was a pretty serious attack on a child. I don't think you can be rehabilitated from that, even if you were to try to give him a second chance at freedom some day.

As always though they had to sneak in "Grand Theft Auto, an ultra-violent video game", as if its somewhat relevant.

I admit to being a little too emotionally attached to gaming, but that's a bit excessive.
...did GTA even have gameplay aspects that couldn't be recovered within a couple of hours? I might understand shouting at the kid if it was a Dead Rising or Disgaea file you poured 50 hours of your life into, but for fucks sake, all you did was lose one lunch break. Someone get this guy some fucking anger management before he kills an inmate.

The content of the game is irrelevant, but it does seem to be the case that people get far too emotionally invested in games in general.
The problem is not that its violent, but that it has such a capacity to get people addicted enough to do something like this.

Chris Benoit anyone? I'm sure it wasn't GTA behind that though...

See for something like this, he probably just beat them for no reason since he's a pissed off tool, and blamed it on video games so the media would get a stiffy and he could claim shellshock.

As usual I find myself agreeing with Soundwave
We'll be agreeing again next month when we're both going on about how awesome Dragon Age 2 is!

Wow. That's just... Wow. How can you do that? Especially to an 8 year old ki...

Wait a minute! That's reported by the Daily Mail? I'm going to stay on the speculative side of this. I mean, it's still horrible. But this is the Daily Mail we're talking about. The paper on a crusade of truth and justice against video games, racism, Labour and immigrants!

Regardless of the paper, I hope the kid gets better soon.

I'm guessing his army experience was not at all traumatizing or violent, I say blame the game!
And think of the children!

Well honestly these are the sort of people you use for front line cannon fodder, can't think of a reason why they let him go back home.

I lost some save data to a hard drive crash. I learned my lesson to make back ups more often.
Save data for GTA Vice city was lost. I didn't punch anyone or anything in my Anger, because i'm not a moron. Well, not that much of a moron.

I think i may punch this Guy in the Face. He knowingly damages the reputation of a medium that brings entertainment to a lot of People. This guy is worse then Fox News, they offer some jobs for their People at least.

No, but I see what you did there.

OP: I find it funny how media thinks a violent videogame is more important to this than the guy being a soldier, someone trained to kill, and praised for it.

Are you kidding? I love re-playing that game, so what if he lost his data, video games are meant to be played more than once! I say they tear out his organs and give them to the kid.
He even looks like the sterotypical bad boyfriend!
This enrages me, I'm serious, if he has so much time in jail, give his organs to the kid. That's justice.....rrrrrr I am just so angry right now. Instead of punching a kid, I think I will use video games to cool off, as they deter violence by offering a healthy alternitive where nobody gets hurt.
