Damn this last few month, I hate to be excluded of those great games because of exclusivity.
Its so sad when you barely can afford one AAA games and there is basically only few exclusive you would want to play on a console. There no way I'm spending that extra 300$ for the console just for that few games... its even worst when the 4 or 5 games all are on different console.. DAMN IT...
ok im sorry for this rant its just I feel like we had quite a surge of great looking game that were exclusive.
to name one or two on each console
Ps4: Horizon Dawn Zero, Nioh, Blood Borne
WiiU or Switch: Zelda
3DS: Pokemon, Zelda
so hard to choose only one console :(

Just be more like your hero tippy2k2 and do what I do!

I buy my "primary" system first. This is the system that I am most comfortable with and will play the multiplatform releases on (this gen and last gen was the Xbox, last last gen was the PS2 and PS1). Play those exclusives and the third party games to your hearts content. Wait for your secondary systems (so systems you are buying for first party stuff exclusively) to drop in price.

For me, I bought the PS3 once Uncharted 3 came out (so a little over 5 years after the PS3 came out). By that point, the PS3 had dropped significantly in price AND there was one hell of a cheap backlog that now opened up to me.

I intend to do the same thing with the PS4 and might pull that trigger this year with some of these killer games coming out for it recently...

When the PS4 came out, first thing my brother did...was buy a PS3 :p

yes, but I can barely name 5 games per console I would want to try/play
Nintendo maybe has the most but most games don't really last more than few hours (unless you really go the collect all routes)
And that without saying I could spend those 300-400+ on a new computer to play those exclusive too (witcher, fallout)

I guess my choice will go to pc unfortunatly, still not enough incentive to go to any console.
I guess I have to try and borrow one from a friend :p

I bet if you really really looked (not anything personal here, I'm just assuming you're like me and going off of what you know about the games on each system and there's a ton of stuff that slides by the radar), you'd find plenty of games that you would want to play that you can't elsewhere.

I suppose if there is literally just one game that you want to play and have zero interest in anything else, then you're kind of stuck either waiting for next gen (you can get a Xbox 360/PS3 for about $75 used or $120 new at this point with the quick Google search I did), mooching from a friend, gritting your teeth and taking the hit, or not playing the game you want :(

considering there few exclusive to start with (besides nintendo), I don't think I can really name 10 games that look slightly interesting on each console to try them out.
Maybe I'm just too selective :p (yes, I'm a hard pleased gamer)

Pokemon Sun and Moon sucks ass. only worth picking up if you're into the competitive pokemon scene. never been a fan of top down zeldas either and link between worlds does nothing to change that for me.

go with either the Switch or the PS4.

The only problem I could see having is getting left outside because my friends would all have this or that console and its games and I couldn't participate in talking about them. That is if I had friends. Besides, over the years it has become more and more "childish" to be so really excited about a game to really really want to play it. Marketing and hype doesn't bite like it used to when I was a kid.

Don't bother with a console and save your money for a decent gaming PC. Most Xbox exclusives are now coming to PC so not only will you get almost all the 3rd party ps4 and Xbox stuff but you will also get the Xbox exclusives too.

True, but the console versions are vastly inferior due to extremely limited mod support in the case of Fallout 4, and the console versions of both Fallout 4 and Witcher 3 suffer from poor performance. Unless your PC is even worse than the Xbone and the PS4 there is no reason to play either game on console.

To be fair most mods actively make the game worse, and a version designed for standardized hardware tends to run smoother.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions is going to have to be something I play, but since it's tied to the Wii U it might end up being a worse value purchase than my Vita.

Haha, good one. In the total number, sure, most mods will most likely not be to your personal taste. Which isn't a problem because there are so many mods that you will almost always have dozens of mods which greatly enhance a game for you.

My bad, I didn't meant to say witcher or fallout as exclusive, but rather non-exclusive, so its not worth buying a ps4 and witcher it I could just do the same for pc and its will cost about the same
and yes I would prefer pc (for mods for eg).
oh well, *shrugs*
:p

PS4 in just the last 3 months has had The Last Guardian, Nioh, Horizon, Yakuza 0, and Gravity Rush 2 (I realize 2 of them aren't Sony developed). I'm not even a fan of most Sony games as I only like 1 game out of the God of War series and 1 from the Uncharted series. It's just that Sony releases more games than Nintendo and Microsoft combined.

I don't know about Fallout 4 but Witcher 3 runs great on PS4. Something like a higher framerate and better resolution is nice, but it doesn't make the game better. It's like watching a movie on blu-ray vs DVD doesn't make the movie actually better, a bit more enjoyable sure. And with how average at best Witcher 3's combat is, it ain't getting any better with more fps either. There's nothing with the combat that requires precise timing along with the fact that the hitboxes are bad and CDPR doesn't understand action combat and proper use of i-frames.

There's a lot of games I'd love to play, but I certainly feel you, the console exclusivity is a pain in the dick.

Oh well, I just won't buy them. Controllers are too hard for me to use, and even if I was on a fair ground as everyone else, there's no way I can drop the money on a console when a HW upgrade for my PC is less than $100.

This is true, I just finished making fun of a mod for Stellaris [http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=818053151] that gives you the ability to build a disgustingly overpowered unit right out the gate. (2000EC, and 800Min for a unit that can 1-shot everything during an invasion? Really? Look at that shit. Laugh at it.) But there are a lot of amazing gems for games that have been modded in, like "The MOCX Initiative" [http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=870593225] from XCOM2, which adds a very tough and exciting challenge. A lot of times, a good Total Conversion mod can even make the game worth buying, like Long War, or the billions of 'mods' that were released for UT99, or Half-Life. (I use the term loosely here, because those mods are within their right, a full game to be sold alongside the base game, and some of them even grew to do just that, wheras others pissed away their chance by saying 'no' to valve.)

Mods sell games, and when you find the right one, it can really change the experience, or provide a new challenge, or generally increase the quality of life for a game. Something as simple as the "Tiny Outliner" [http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=810204739] for Stellaris quickly becomes a must-have, and doesn't give the player any clear benefit.

It's not just "console exclusivity", it's platform exclusivity as a whole.

A lot of times the narrative flows from the PC gamers, how consoles are keeping games away from them that they want to play, but it's something that effects everyone on every platform. There are games on PC that a person with only a Nintendo console would like to play, there are games on Xbox that a person with only a PlayStation would like to play and so forth and so forth.

With Nintendo, I feel like they're doing it on purpose with their hardware. There's tonnes of games for Nintendo consoles I'd love to play again and again, but emulators just don't cut it. And I'm not buying a bunch of new-ish consoles to play them.

When I said what I said, I didn't mean it in the sense that "all games need to be for PC, I can't touch them because of master race." I do agree with you that most games should be available for all platforms. We've gone beyond the hardware limitations and trying to keep things unique with fancy controllers. The consoles now-a-days are basically pretend PC's with a controller that's essentially the same. I'm waiting for the day that you have the option of buying a Mouse/Keyboard combo for your consoles, as we're already way beyond the point of buying a controller for your PC.

Sadly, there are some games that simply do not translate well to a controller, and some games do not translate well to M/KB... But that's the nature of the beast. You also have the problem of players using one device or the other at a straight up disadvantage vs the other.

EDIT: Actually, I'd love for some game companies to adopt a "Universal License." You buy it once, and you get it for every system it supports. Windows, Linux, Android, Xbox, PSx, Nintendo... I feel like that would help players reunite with friends, regardless of what console they have.
