I better not catch you guys buying $20k worth of twinkies!
How high do you think a 20k twinkie mountain would rise?

OT: Good luck in the surgery Alison! Hope Extra Credits continues without problems but I'd understand if they need some time off.

Wait. How large is a regular twinkie, and how much are singles? We can solve with with math. And science. It's important.

sorry, derailing a bit but I can't help myself

..."dimensions of a Twinkie (2.7 cm x 9.9 cm x 3.8 cm)..."

Normal Twinkie volume: 2.7 cm x 9.9 cm x 3.8 cm =101.6 cm³

For those curious, the five grand was donated by a company called Stack Exchange [http://stackexchange.com/] according to this tweet. [https://twitter.com/#!/codinghorror/status/86277774121250817]. Now, where is James going?

Perhaps if we keep going, we'll be able to afford a superior robot arm for Allison, able to not only produce art at speeds unknown to human mechanical limits, but also assist with various everyday tasks, such as letter stamping, electronics repair, and disposal of enemy law enforcement.

...However, Allison's insurance is playing the "pre-existing condition" card so it might cost more than he intended...
From what I hear the first thing any insurer does when they get a claim is deny it on some trivial ground, the reasoning being that if the claimant isn't serious they'll go away and the insurer wont have to pay. Keep at it and they might eventually cave but either way, fuck those guys. I mean yeah, it's a pre-existing condition, she has a shoulder, the potential for it to be injured was always there. :/

The generousity of this community is only rivalled by the tight-arse-ed-ness, (it's a word now,) of the insurance industry.

Exactly. When my mother got a serious hip problem, the insurance company claimed an existing condition, one which translated to 'hips get older, and old things have problems.' She fought it though, and got treatment paid for.

Sorry to hear, hope Allison gets better soon. Having just undergone a rather serious surgery myself (and therefore being unable to work for quite some time) I'm incredibly broke. All I have to offer is my condolences, and a sincere good luck!

This is truly mind blowing. We have already gone over and above what they originality needed in only a few hours.

Will sign up and donate once I return from this morning's lecture. This show is just too good to disappear like this, and it'd be a horrible waste of potential for a talented young artist to lose her career because of some random medical condition.

EDIT: There you go - 50 bucks. Hope it helps. Get well soon, Allison! :)

Wow. This much...? This fast...? I am truly proud of this community, and I am honored to consider myself a part of it. I just went and donated, but already seeing almost $24,000 there before I even heard of the project really just brings joy to my heart. Way to go, everyone!

Now, let's keep on going! FULL STEAM AHEAD!

That pre-existing thing is basically criminal. Insurance companies use that and recission to basically avoid paying what they're obligated to pay.

Sadly, I've gotten good at this, as my wife had a six month fight with cancer. But with time, I successfully got the insurance company to pay most of what they owed (the majority of the rest, I got the hospital billing department to dismiss). It's about persistance and never taking no for an answer.

Bottom line, contest. And the insurance company will come back and say "We asked around the office if we owed you money, and everyone said no, so we processed your claim correctly". Then send them another letter (ALWAYS get everything in writing) in which you use the words "medically necessary" and possibly "negligent". Note that Alison's career and future income depend on the correct processing of her claim. Reiterate that it is NOT a pre-existing condition. Letters from doctors help.

Finally, if this fails (and it might), get a lawyer to draft another letter. Know any videogame fans with a law degree? Might be able to swing probono (I did). Send a letter describing the insurance company's negligence and intransigence to the state insurance commissioner and cc the insurance company. Lessee...top notch graphic designer's career up to retirement age is probably worth several million dollars. Yeah, that might get their attention.

Bottom line, never let the insurance company dictate the narrative. The only successful and proper outcome is when they pay what they owe. Any other answer is a non-starter.

Gosh, can't tell I feel strongly about this issue, can you?

Wow. It's extremely impressive that an individual donated $5,000 to help them out. I hope it isn't a mistake or the person doesn't back out at the last minute.
