Eyes open underwater

Hiya escapists.
I went to the swimming pool today; partially to get some exercise, partially to take a shower.

Now, the thing is: When I got to the pool, I realized I had left my goggles at home. Knowing full well I can not really handle swimming without my goggles, I still went into the water and started swimming.

Things went well for the first couple of minutes; but then I decided to get out of the water and take a short break. And from there things went pretty much exactly as expected: My eyes started to burn. Initially only a weak burning sensation, but it soon became nigh-unbearable. I couldn't really do anything but sit at the waterside and wait it out. So, while sitting there, I figured I could ask you guys: Am I the only one? How do you handle being under water?

So can you handle keeping your eyes open under water? Why/why not?

Usually if given the option I wear goggles, but if not I open mine under water a lot. It burns, but it's not unbearable.

I can handle it. It just stings like hell and is blurry. I basically just try to not focus on the pain. Which, admitting, is hard, but it works for me.

Yeah, I always could. I didn't find out till way later that it's something not everyone can do for whatever reason.

I usually don't like too, mostly because the water I'm in is usually salt water or heavily chlorinated, but if the risk of burning eyes is low I'll open them.

Yup, Of course if I keep them open constantly for like 30mins (between small breaks of course)
then they will feel a little irritated, but nothing like the burning sensation like you described.

[small]I'm sure there's somebody out there like you though......somewhere[/small]

I can easily keep my eyes open for a while, i never used goggles as they were always annoying to have on. Goggles were just annoying...

It can sting a bit, but yeah, I keep them open. Never used goggles so I guess I'm used to it.

I can handle if if there isn't a lot of chlorine in the water, although even then I don't exactly like it. So, I usually don't do it very much at all.

I don't know, it doesn't really burn, it's just not a good feeling. It's like the water's tickling your eyes or something... weird stuff, i say.
And i use goggles most of the time, but i can be without too. Doesn't bother that much.

Ever since I was little I'd open my eyes underwater. I definitely wouldn't have if it had burned though lol.

I usually use goggles, but I'm capable of swimming without them, although I have kind sensitive eyes so it starts to get really irritating after a while.
