Eyes open underwater

I cant in dirty water (lakes, ponds, etc) but in pools I can

I dont open my eyes under water, its not good for them.

I can do it quite easily the only problem is after a long swim everything appears to be surrounded by faint smoke which is kinda cool and kinda frightening
