Doesn't it depend on the water? Like if you go to swim in a pool thats been freshly doped with alot of clorine or whatever perserving/cleaning chems they put in it, you're likely to come out red eyed.

There's a big difference between a swimming pool and a natural and pure lake. The second wont burn your eyes at all.

without goggles its a blurry and bleak mess

so now i always wear my goggles as there is nothing to see and the irritation no matter how minor isn't worth it.

I can keep them open underwater, but it stil burns and is blurry like hell so I don't do it most times. Just because I "can't see" what the blurry stuff is.

Depends on whats in the water. Its real easy in lakes and low chemical pools, impossible in the ocean.

I used to need goggles, then one day I just... stopped. Can't explain it.

A mate of mine went on a Life-guarding course at a pool. FUN FACT: That stinging? It's caused more by piss than it is by the chlorine.
^Truth

its due to a lack of chlorine

Oh God no. If I can't use goggles, I just close my eyes and feel my way around If I even try to open my eyes, they'd instantly shut.

No. Eyes open underwater isn't just a major freakin' healthrisk (as bacterias and such enter as easily through eyes as open wounds(does not apply for water with chloride in it)), but it also stings real freakin' bad.

Ouch.

Goggles, bah! Never really need them.
Salt Water: Never a problem
Chlorine: 30 minutes and it starts getting irritating, but that's time with eyes open under water.

Depends on the level of chlorine. When I used to take swimming lessons when I was little I could open my eyes fine, and swim for long periods underwater with them open. Then I decided to go swimming in the pool when I went on holiday and the chlorine was so bad I thought I'd gone blind. Not sure about sea water because when you're holidaying in Britain you tend to avoid going in the sea if you can help it, because it's either filthy, freezing cold or there's a horny dolphin on the loose.

I can't force myself to open them underwater, I don't know why but I can't. But it doesn't bother me if I do, doesn't hurt or anything. I fell out of a motor boat once, my eyes were stuck open while I was under water, didn't bother me one bit; but if you ask me to put my head in the bathtub and open my eyes I just can't do it.

I can, but I'm really, really sensitive to chlorine and particulates.
I never do if I can avoid it.

Well, if you have contacts, you can do it, since it seems the chlorine affects the cornea, not the whole eye.

I've never had a problem with opening my eyes underwater, except at my college, but the water there is so chlorinated that it would bleach the clothes I put on afterward.
