I just read a huge preview of F.E.A.R. 3 and it has effectively killed any expectations I had of the game.

It has co-op campaign.

This in itself will mean the scares are even less frequent than in F.E.A.R. 2, but it gets worse...

Player 2 plays as Paxton Fettel. That's right... a ghost. And he can't shoot. Nope. He sees the world in a wierd red haze, can find hidden stuff and possess bodies for a few seconds.

Honestly, the game is off my 'might buy' list now.

Did people enjoy F.E.A.R. 2? Can you imagine the game with co-op, and do you think it's a good or bad thing?

And for discussion's sake... what games had really good co-op campaigns?

I say give it a wait and try it out before you judge, or tell any friends that might want to play with you to fuck off in fear that you might have to play as Paxton

whatever works for you

Well, for the last part, I thought Modern Warfare 2 had a good coop element, and so did the first.

I think that any non horror game, but especially sandbox games, could be improved with the addition of coop.

But yeah, that's not gonna work for fear.

I thought that Gears of War had an excellent co-op campaign. I had so much fun with that game with my friends.

Timesplitters was another great co-op game. Still one of my favorites to this day.

Doesn't sound like Coop would be a good element of FEAR 3, but how would the game story hold up when you're not playing Co-op? I'm willing to try it.

I agree, I love co-op campaigns. But not in horror games, because, well, you're not gonna be scared with your buddy beside you offering you another beer.

At least they're trying something different. Kind of strengthesns my theory that Monolith have no idea where they're taking the story and never did know, but whatever. At least by having the original point man they may be heading onto the right track of the original story. Presumably.

I have no idea, F.E.A.R 2 put me off the F.E.A.R franchise to be honest.

Hell, even having another person in a horror game can ruin the mood, imagine random matchmaking with 12 year olds...

The horror[footnote]The irony is meant entirely[/footnote].

I'm a fan of the FEAR storyline, so I just want to see how Day 1 will proceed with the plot. As far as the co-op goes, I'm giving it a wait-and-see approach with a healthy dash of optimism. The co-op sounds really intriguing and will definitely be something people haven't seen or thought of before. It could end up being utter crap, but you still have the single-player and multiplayer to tide you over.

What great co-op games are out there? Off the top of my head, there's:
the Halo series
Modern Warfare 2 (the only bright spot of that game)
Gears of War 2 (the only bright spot of that game, too)
Timesplitters 2 & Future Perfect
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (Conviction is pretty good, too)
Earth Defense Force 2017
L4D2

When I read the ghost thing I instantly thought of Giest, which was a pretty awesome game.

Time and time again you'll notice I frequently show my complete and utter disdain for FEAR 2: Project Origin. Just so many things wrong with that game.

I was slightly put off when I found out about the co-op campaign, but I'm not going to give up on it just yet.

From the looks of things however, you don't have to play as Paxton Fettel. So I guess I'll be buying FEAR 3 for the single-player campaign alone, since that's all I'm interested in. But on the other hand... cinematics? Eww. I hope by "cinematics" they really mean "cutscenes". Cinematics don't belong in FEAR. Period. I find myself hoping they don't dumb it down like they did with Project Origin. And that the voice acting will be so much better this time around.

Like you, my hope for this new sequel is dwindling.

when I first saw that they where making F.3.A.R(no, I will not let them live down the fact they used chat speak for that), it looked great. It looked like a return to F.E.A.R one, back when it was actually scary, now, it's about as scary as the care bears Halloween special. Seriously, take back what you said about F.E.A.R one being none cannon and make more games like it, not more like F.E.A.R two, which was "F.E.A.R., as directed by Micheal Bay."

Nope, F.E.A.R 2 did that in less than an hour. I'm a big fan of F.E.A.R but I will not be buying number 3.

FEAR 1 was original, flashy, scared the shit out of people at times, and was a technological breakthrough of sorts, with a nice looking (and laggy at times) game engine.
FEAR 2 was just an attempt to cash in on the fans of FEAR 1
FEAR 3 is... meh? I can't even justify its' existence... let alone buying it. Not even worth pirating imho. =)
