You don't have to choose between just "man" or "woman" on Facebook anymore when picking your gender! There are over fifty new options! FtM, genderfluid, agender, gender questioning, non-binary, etc. Sadly, this is only on the U.S. English version.

Also, as Doctor Teatime was kind enough to point out, you can choose more than one thing from the same time, emaning there's literally millions of different ways to identify yourself. Last week, we had two options. Now we've got millions.

Yes, talk in all caps, surely that will help, you frustrated fellow.

Anyway, I'll admit I don't fully comprehend the transgender community or issues around it. As far as I'm concerned, they can do whatever they like, doesn't bother me, so long as they don't infringe on my personal rights, which I think is highly unlikely.
Man/Woman/Turtle/Lion, etc, whatever you preferred to be addressed as or seen as, it's cool.

Have a good day, and I hope your thread goes more peacefully the second time.

I made it in caps to make sure people see it this time. And maybe, just maybe, respect it.

Good luck. Anything remotely related to gender, sexism, etc, tends to go off like firecrackers made with napalm on this site. Well, peace dude. I'm gonna sit the rest of this one out.

I knew they had extra options, but 50?

Wow. That's a lot.

Still, it doesn't affect me,

Here's the full list if you want to gawk:
Agender

Bigender

Cis Male
Cis Man
Cis Woman
Cisgender
Cisgender Female
Cisgender Male
Cisgender Man
Cisgender Woman
Female to Male
FTM
Gender Fluid
Gender Nonconforming
Gender Questioning
Gender Variant
Genderqueer
Intersex

MTF
Neither
Neutrois
Non-binary

Transgender Female
Transgender Male
Transgender Man
Transgender Person
Transgender Woman
Transmasculine
Transsexual
Transsexual Female
Transsexual Male
Transsexual Man
Transsexual Person
Transsexual Woman
Two-spirit

Most of these seem really pedantic, I mean, as a heterosexual guy I could technically be Male, cis male, cis man, cisgender male, or cisgender man. I don't see a difference there that's going to cause anyone sleepless nights if they had only the option of one of those.

I like Cisgender Man though, that makes me sound like a really unneccessary superhero.

Fighting for the rights of the first-world hetero white guy, it's CISGENDERMAN

I have to ask, is facebook doing something like this really important enough to warrant a new topic about it? I mean i'm happy for those who feel "whatever-it-may-be" gender and that they can now show it to their friends list on facebook, but this really seems like such a small thing. (I can understand one topic, but a second one after the first one got to quite many pages?)

Or is there something i'm missing? :/

It is a big deal insomuch that it shows that these issues are finally getting more mainstream recognition.

Why all the options for Transgender and Transsexual? Whats the difference between a Transgender Male and Transgender Man?

Anyway guess for people who fall under a category other than male or female it's nice. Doesn't really affect me much.

I also only give this thread a couple more hours until either a mod locks it for a repost or another argument kicks up.

Just like i thought, a ton of those are basically interchangeable. I mean, are you gonna tell me that cis male, cis man, cisgender male and cisgender man are not the same thing? Isn't cis just short for cisgender? Aren't at least cis man and cisgender man for example the same damn thing? Meh, whatever, i don't even use facebook that much.

A lot of the terms are indeed pretty much synonyms. I think FB figured they might just as well add lots of variations of the same concept so that people can pick the one they're most used to.

It's the symbolism of it all. Facebook acknowledges that not everybody identifies as a man or a woman. And it's not that I'm starting a second topic; it's more that I'm continuing the last one.

It looks like they just put every abbreviation and way of saying an orientation they could find to me. I'm fairly sure there is no difference between cis woman, cis female, cisgender woman and cisgender female but maybe I'm wrong on that. Still good on facebook.

I actually find it interesting they included "Two Spirit" in there. If I remember correctly native american culture had their own concept of transgenderism and in order to explain why this happened they said the person had the spirit of both genders. I find it interesting that facebook would acknowledge that. Are there many people who consider themselves to be two spirited today?

Now more on topic.. I don't mean to come off as rude, I respect people's right to live how they like. I support the transgendered community despite the fact I don't quite understand what it is they go through as well as they do. But do we need fifty different descriptions in order to get the message across? Things like "Gender fluid" and "Gender nonconforming" seem like the exact same thing to me. And again, sorry if I come of as rude, but I usually find you referring yourself as "Cis-female" or "Cis-Male" in every day interaction kind of pretentious.

Things like Gender fluid are fine, that's an accurate description of some people. Transgendered Male and transgendered female absolutely. Two Spirited I even respect because it's a part of culture. But what does "Non-Binary" mean exactly, and why would "Transfeminine" (which I assume to mean feminine male) and transmasculine be their own gender rather then a description of them as an individual? Maybe I'm just ignorant but a lot of these feel redundant to me.

It had a bunch of posts and then got locked, I doubt this one will be much different, even with the all-caps and bold.

But either way this is all good. Can't say I'm effected by the issues or understand a lot of the differences in the titles (Trans male+man along with Transgender male+man for example [sub][sub]And anyone reading this please don't quote me to inform me of the difference I'll call people what they ask but I really don't want to learn god knows how many different terms to remember and what they all mean[/sub][/sub])

Though researching "Two-spirit" it's certainly... different.

It is worthy of note that you can choose more than one thing from the list, transfeminine and transmasculine in particular I've mostly seen used in conjunction with other terms as to further specify what you're trying to convey. I.e, gender nonconforming, transfeminine says more than just gender nonconforming.

Like I said in the last thread, It's great Facebook is giving people the option to make their profile what they actually want.

That said, I fundamentally believe they are doing this so they can build a more accurate personal profile on your data and sell it to advertisers and governments, not because they're a super cool socially progressive company.

Celebrating that you can choose I can understand. Praising Facebook, on the other hand, is your call. I truthfully do not believe the motivations behind the move were altruistic.

There's a fantastic quote from one of Facebook's software engineers. "There's going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world,"

And that's really all there is to be said on the subject. For some people in my life this is wonderful news. It makes them feel better. For that reason alone this is great. I can't imagine a single reason to be mad about it. I know people are, I saw the other topic from yesterday. But I can't figure out a legitimate reason for it.

50? Fifty?

Now I'm actually starting to think Facebook is actually trying to have a laugh there and make the list as over the top as they possibly can.

Pretty much my thoughts on it.

What the fuck is "gender unconforming" and what exactly is "neither" supposed to mean when there's 50 options? And do they really need to have different options for abbreviations? Female to male and FTM mean the exact same thing, you don't need both.

Facebook was purposefully trying to make the list as bloated as possible because clearly long lists are much more impressive than short ones. Someone could cut that list in half without losing anything whatsoever.

I am quite perplexed by the redundancy of some of those options. While I can certainly see the advantage to having male, female, male to female, female to male, intersex, genderfluid, two-spirit and the like...Why on earth do we need Cis and Cisgender when the former is literally just the abbreviation of the latter? And why do we need variations for both of those for 'man' and 'male', 'woman' and 'female'? For most intents and purposes those options have no qualitative or symbolic difference. Similarly, is there really any qualitative difference between genderqueer, gender nonconforming and gender variant? (Honest question. It's my understanding that genderqueer is pretty much a catch-all term for anyone 'outside the gender binary', and by appearances the latter two seem to be similarly broad).
