Just go offline. Mostly I stay offline and just reply to things via the message service if I need to.

It's good for talking to people you actually want to talk to, though.

Isn't that one dying now anyway for the 'new' model, the Google plus?
I know,I know,I'm trying to invite people to Google+ as fast as I can but they just don't leave!

OT:Facebook chat allows you...erm,it allows you...fuck I can't think of anything.
I can think of an obvious one...it allows you to chat with the people added to your friends list.

I only friend people I know in real life or known over the net for years. I don't superficially try to inflate my friend count with people I don't know. Even then I don't frequent FB too often. I've had quite a few meaningful conversations over the FB chat.

I generally don't use FB chat... and when I have, it's usually been for hours on end catching up with people I haven't spoken to in a long time (friends from school/undergrad days etc.).

A lot of it is either political ranting or academic discussion, so it has its uses, I suppose.

What you've effectively said here is something I see very often. Someone will dislike something simply because the fans, or people who populate the website are, to put it nicely, mildly lacking when it comes to intelligence.

Your problem with Facebook seems to be with the people. I have absolutely no issue with the chat, I just hate people who have no grammar, and/or talk like "HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII BAAAAAAAAABEZZZZZZZZZZZZ HRU???"

There is actually a way around this though. You can create specific friend groups, and put people in them, then limit your availability, so that you appear online to everyone except the people in that group. It's something I do when I want to avoid people, but not hurt their feelings.

Don't blame the chat, if it's actually your friends that are dumb.

Yes, I have people like that on my friend's list. I'd delete them, but they're actually family and relatives mostly. But yes, I do use the chat for regular instant-messaging with regular people who have meaningful things to say and WHO DON'T TYEP LIEK THIS BAI :pPPPPPP

I sure have. I've gotten tips for my workout, planned times to hangout, and some other stuff.

I don't know anyone who types like that either so that helps. And I don't use it too often, most of the time my friends and I just text or call each other.

I just hate the whole site and what it does. I got Google+ and while its infinitely better the Facebook I still never use it.

That isn't the chat's fault. I use it all of the time to talk with friends. It is a decent IM system.

I feel ya man. I have a few friends (most of them I never even see anymore) who always want to chat on Facebook. If I log on and see that they're on I try to check my messages and such then get off very quickly before they can start a chat that will lead to nowhere. Luckily most of my friends are cool and don't do this sort of thing but a few of them still persist *sigh*.

Oh well, over the years I've mastered the art of keeping a conversation brief without coming off as rude...most of the time.
Did you know that you can go 'offline' in chat? Play around with the options. That should solve the problem.

Facebook, the nexus of anti-intellectual behaviour.

You notice how girls always post hearts, "beautiful", "sexy" etc on their female friends' profile pictures whenever they change? You want to know why? Well, the whole point is to be the centre of a close group of friends. So what you do is constant name-dropping, where that name is your own. The whole point is that if you spam other people enough with complements, then they'll feel obliged to comment back. Of course, there is rarely anything interesting to comment on (seeing that most facebook photos are utter crap), so you get more of the useless "sexy", "gorgeous" bull. What you end up with is an endless spiral of approval- and recognition-seeking, where the comments steadily progress to uncharted lows.

A meaningful conversation is not what facebook is about. Facebook is about "staying in touch" with your friends, aka promoting yourself to make sure people can't avoid you, ensuring your position as the person with the largest amounts of comments on your profile photo.

So there you have it. The recipe for facebooking success: Get a good camera.

Please tell me ONE thing facebook chat is good for.
Absolutely nothing!

Anyway, my chat sessions last no longer than ten minutes, tops.

I don't see how the chat is stupid when it's your friends that are the problem? It isn't exactly the chat's fault for what your friends type into it.

I use facebook chat to...chat with friends. And thus, it does its job!

It's not the chat. Find better people. If someone you don't really care for is your friend on facebook then just dismiss them on chat. That's what I do. Or go offline. I really don't think you can blame the chat dealy, though I guess you aren't, really.

If this is your most common experience on facebook, then you must keep some obnoxious company. I the last facebook conversation I had was about existentialist nihilism.
