failed badasses...well,Dante's at the top of the list.

one badass i did like was johnny gat from saints row.(i talk about this game to much,i know)
"i said shut up"-tony green from the VK's.
"I got shitty hearing."
*green shoots gat.*"now you got a shitty leg!"
*gat falls to the floor, pulls out his switch blade and stabs green the leg.*
"you too."

...Dante just can't act, whether being bad ass or trying to be remorseful.

Anything from Baird in Gears of War. I loved the game, but everytime he spoke, it made me a little sad inside.
He wasn't meant to be badass he was meant to be the whiny annoying overmuscled killing machine, but not expressly badass

Gears of War. I'm sorry but i couldn't take that game seriously. I only thought there was one badass person in the game (Raam) and thats only because he reminded me of the Nemesis from RE3. (seriously, wasn't anyone else just waiting for him to say "STAAAAARSSSSSS".)

Leon in RE4, he had some pretty sad lines but i have to respect him for not leaving ashley to die. If i was him i wouldn't be able to stand her.

Man, showing my age here...

What about the combat dialogue from the original Starfox...

Alternately, the live action cutscenes from PSX's Warhawk.

Sephiropth.

He could almost be if he weren't so emo.
and if he wasn't so inherently ridiculous. Waist length hair, a 7foot long sword and a fucking trench coat? Riding the train with the guy must have been a fucking nightmare.

Actually the best example of sub badassery isn't a game at all. It's Vin Diesel in the chronicles of riddick.

The line "I'm not afraid of the dark. The dark is afraid of me" made me laugh out loud.

Fortune in MGS2. Shes just plain weird.

ALthough Pliskin (sp?) is pretty badass.
Fortune was supposed to be badass?
I'm not sure whether she was supposed to be, but her attitude towards death and how insane she is suggests she was supposed to be badass, but it just went too far.

Anything that comes out of Ding Chavez's mouth. Finding out that I had to play as that tosser on the X-Box version of Rainbow Six 3 was a huge disappointment. On my mate's PC version he never even made it into any of my teams. Ex-CIA? Big deal. If I'm making a counter terrorist team I want former SAS.
Eh, I would want the entire airforce under my wing, And recon marines.

Failures of the ancient art of badass would have to be Dante from DMC (he just comes across as arrogant and cocky half the time) and Havoc from CnC Renagade (he had only one good line in the entire game, that being 'congratulations kids! we just qualified as a nuclear threat!' upon hearing a nuke is headed your way).

Pretty good badasses would have to be Duke Nukem (he is the epitome of badass), Naked/Solid Snake (any protaganist from an MGS other than 2) and Kratos and Crypto from their respective games (both were pretty much on a mission to kill everyone in their way because their game demands it).

I don't think Raiden was supposed to be badass, therefore he doesn't fail at being it.
Just before we get all the Raiden-hate gangs showing up...

Was anyone else pissed off by the black marine from COD4 (SSGT Griggs)? Every time he spoke I felt like punching him. The fact that he reps over the end credits only increases my blood pressure.

Since when does every black guy you meet in an FPS is an unstoppable immortal badass with the ability to take a full magazine to the head and not die? Are they trying to placate the black community by saying "Hey, look! Black people can be immortal and impervious to harm too." I first saw it in Halo and remember wondering "He's black, EVERYBODY else is white. Meh, whatever" But now it's gone beyond silly. When was the last time a black ally of yours actually died?

Nope haven't been playing MGS2 for long (I'm about 3-4 hours in but it's my first MGS), but so far what i've seen he really doesn't seem to be trying to be badass, in fact most of the time he seems pretty scared.
