Ouch, you just brought Timeshift into my head.
Yeah, that's one of the ones that comes to mind. That and Blinx.
Never played Blinx but I know that Timeshift was completely aweful; I can't bare to finish it from the risk of my brain imploding.
Oh, Blinx was okay, but the time control was wretched.

Any plot which involves redemption of some kind is always annoying.

That's why I like God of War's story. You get the impression that Kratos will win back his family after undergoing his various trials but, of course, he killed them. So they're not coming back.

(Not that GoW is the epitome of magnificent storytelling, I just think it managed that part particularly well.)
In Chains of Olympus he sacrificed being with his daughter to save the world.
Damn you ReadyAtDawn, you screwed up a perfectly good fromula.
Oh yeah that reminds me; Ready At Dawn got back thier PSP dev kits last month. I loved Chains of Olympus and Daxter.

Agreed. Likewise the DS touch screen is also epic fail. Nintendo get thier money from cheap gimmicks.
What? No.... Nintendo thrives off originality and kittens, I can't remember the last time they milked a dead cow.

Yeah! *goes to play Zelda: phantom hourglass* (Ironically I am playing it)
Obvious sarcasm aside, the kittens thing probably is right (also dogz, horsez, hamsterz(why do they all have z's?)).

"Elite" units in RTS'es. Somehow they're either way overpowered, or completely useless. In essence they're gamebreaking: either you'll only be pumping those out or you'll be gimped as a faction/race just for having 'em in your repetoire.

Point in case: Mammoth Tanks from Red Alert. Did anyone really build anything else?

There is no mammoth tanks in Red Alert, those were in the Tiberium Universe.
But I agree. elite units are evil, and either mine die really easily, or the enemies just won't die.

Time Control. I have yet to see a game pull it off well.
Have you played Braid?
I played a demo, and I still didn't think it was implemented as well as it could have been. But time control is REALLY hard to pull off correctly.
I'm surprised no-one replied to you with Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. That's probably the best game to pull it off well.

The concept that you could literally do anything in a game has yet to be achieved, though maybe one day...

weapon degeneration. its just annoying no matter what game its in.

it doesnt feel right when it breaks before it kills any enemy (RE outbreak)

and it always costes about three kidneys worth of cash to repair it in RPGs.

Meh, Sands of Time was just a respawn thing. Not really controlling time in my opinion.

Do they really have a game called Hamsterz? Does it have a minigame involving Richard Gere?
I've not bought any of these animal games but I assume that it does.

lol it has sequels.

Yeah, No More Heroes, LostWinds, Metroid Prime 3, WarioWare: Smooth Moves and Okami don't exist. /sarcasm

My contribution to this thread is games that let you truly choose your path. I haven't found any. In my experience they're either horribly limited or they only give the illusion of choice. It's especially jarring when the "evil" route is more of a "selfish jerk" route. Even if you play through "properly" once (that is, actually playing a role rather than just choosing the "best" option), once is usually all that you can do without it becoming repetitive. You can't do anything creative, either, because any creative moves on your part have to be anticipated by the programmer and a reaction inserted into the game.

Really? It's been many years since I've played the game, but I think I recall being able to slow down time during battle and rewind if anything went wrong. I'm not too sure though...

Open world shoot em ups.

Far Cry 2 tried it, gave us the same 4 missions repeated ad-infinitum. Adding in the sense of variety, suspense and urgency that all shooters need is difficult when you can always run away. Plus it didn't work, not the concept, the game just... doesn't... work.

Fallout 3, excellent, but the shooting is more gentleman's duel than circle strafe. Limits the actuall shooter element to the game slightly.

Flatout.
Only played the first one so far and while the mini games are fun, the game proper seems to be in the way and while playing it, it doesn't feel like you're actually doing anything but possibly guiding a car around some corners. Is Flatout 2 any tighter with the controls?
