"Fair" gaming

It crossed my mind the other day how people's definitions of what's considered 'fair' multiplayer conduct tend to differ a lot. I have been reading over some forums for Unreal Tournament 2004, as well as chatting ingame and realized how a lot of players tended to bash a lot of weaponry for being "unfair" and "noobish" (god I hate that word).

Admittedly, I didn't care much about it until I stumbled upon some bitching about my beloved Flak Cannon. In every match where a Flak Cannon is within good reach, I usually get the reward "Flak Monkey", which I've always taken as a compliment. Deduction; I kill a lot of people using a weapon. Means I'm good with that weapon, right?

Actually, no. In some circles, it's considered an insult.

Here's a paragraph zipped straight out of Urban Dictionary. Now I can't really tell if he's trolling or being stupid on purpose, but I know there are people around with this ideology:

flak monkey

In Unreal Tournament, what experienced players call newbies who favor the flak cannon. It annoys them, because they learned long and hard to aim like bots, and with this weapon it's possible to win a matchup just by knowing where the enemy will go next.
It is then implied, that aiming were the highest of all gaming skills, and thus it'd destroy the game if you can make points without it. Ironically though, any simple bot can aim like a pro, predicting where an enemy will go next is beyond the abilities of any UT bot I know of.
I'm curious as to how he refers to bot aim as the ideal way of combatting. "Oh noes, he's ruining my aimhax with his Flak Cannon!11!".

I know this may sound hysterical but I had a point with this thread somewhere. Ah yes.

What do you consider to be unfair conduct in gaming? Examples?

In my opinion, if it's part of the game, you are free to use it. Some things are more annoying than others, yes, but I elevate myself above it knowing that I get more satisfaction killing the grenade launcher-hogger once in CoD4 than he got on his 10 previous times killing me combined. Cheating, however, is the unfair part of gaming. Why anyone would do it is beyond me, and again, the satisfaction part springs to mind;

When cheating, is there not a single pestering thought in the back of their heads that tells them that they're kinda ruining the fun for themselves here? Will they really think "wow, I'm awesome" when winning a match?

Run discussion.

If it's in a game, why not use it? Developers put it there for a reason, and if it truly is overpowered then it will be nerfed before long. Those who ***** about said weapons or tactics being nooby should find a way to combat it... or something.

Except martyrdom.

Grrrr... Martyrdom...

agreed, thats annoying, kill some in CQC, then run like hell, get blown up by it anyway.

OT: Any one who glitches under maps and outside maps in multi-player = arses.

Well, that's sort of like cheating I guess. It sure as hell weren't implemented by the creators. As for martyrdom, I don't really know why people get so worked up about it. They're sacrificing a lot of other, more awesome possibilities when choosing this perk, mind you.

I beleive the term "all is fair in love and war" fits pretty good here considering that each match in Multiplayer is like a little war

Unless I'm cheating, I'm not cheating. It's not cheating when I pop an ACOG scope onto my AK-47 and start destroying people. It's not cheating when I'm constantly picking off the two players I'm fighting against solo with my Dragunov.

i'd consider it unfair to shoot people at their respawn spot...
if you just died and after the wait a moment bar has filled you get back in-game to get shot the first second again. even though it's possible i would say it's unfair.
and it doesn't really make you feel like "i'm awesome"

Only glitches and mods are unfair, anything else is fair play IMO. The people who call a weapon 'nooby' or w/e are the noobs for not being able to fight against it (and no, I don't use those weapons).

What's wrong with having a pre-cooked grenade for 1 (or 5) extra kills? Picking up grenades FTW! >=)

If it's in a game use it.
It's people that glitch outside of/under maps that piss me off...

Fair gaming is the opposite of Battlefield 2; a world populated entirely by aimbots, glitchers, and little arseholes who persistently call anyone with a scrap of talent a cheater, and spend their entire games trying to get good players booted. [/rant]

I disagree, as I imagine do most who prefer RocketArena to Quake3, etc. Never played Unreals long enough to get what this monkey thing is, but I do know that players in many FPS games that horde all the weapons early on are very good at either winning the match or staying on top for a long length of time so long as they have a relatively good level of skill (but not necessarily great).

And I wouldn't say they'd be 'nerfed before long'. Some devs don't care so long as they've made their money. Or on the contrary if they aren't making enough why bother?

I guess you could consider it not fair when a gamer finds a flaw or glitch in a game in order to win cheaply i.e. anyone remember the old Street Fighters and Mortal Kombats where a foe would trip you up and then just keep tripping you up over and over again before you have a chance to block, escape, etc? Pretty much like those scenarios.

I think semi auto snipers are preety damn cheep. the way I see it, if you cant get a headshot (WITHOUT using aimbot) then why are you using a sniper. i always go for a Bolt Action sniper, because I aim for the head.

I dont know any game that has this (except the Resistance 2 Campain) But anything that is invisible and can get 1 hit kills annoys the hell out of me, I'm looking at you you god damned chameleons.

hmm, killing people at their respawn point is unfair. they should have a chance to play before getting killed. The one exception i have found to this is COD4. sometimes people just spawn in front of you. Running past them and letting them kill you doesnt make it any more fair.

Other than that however, everything put into a game is fair. everything not intended to be there is unfair (cheats, hacks, glitches). I myself have never been happy about somthing getting nerfed. Sometimes its very rewarding to kill the people that rely on the easy overpowered stuff. plus the overpowered stuff can help keep noobs in a game long enough to learn how to actually play it. The closest i have come to liking a nerf is when they put an endurance meter in L4d to help stop shiva stacking. For those that dont know, the survivors would pick a corner and melee constantly. this would make them very hard to kill. with the endurance meter, the survivors had to take turns meleeing and work together almost flawlessly to achieve this same effect. so that nerf worked out ok.

something being "cheap" is irrelevant.
if it IS PART OF THE GAME, then grow a pair and learn how to overcome it.
Calling somebody "noob,nublet,nub-muffin" or any other variant of the word is simply the most "nooby" thing you can do, if you really consider yourself good in any sense of the word then you should have no problem getting rid of somebody so "nooby" regardless of what weapon they are using or weather or not they are sitting in the same corner every time.

However any illegal additions (aimbots, wallhacks, speedhacks) are completely unfair.

I just hate it when people do crappy things like camping (which is not the same as sniping) and spawn-camping.

Ah, I've read it before.

I'd have to specify that I don't view "cheap" as synonymous with "unfair". This guy has some extremities, for one; his view on fun is something along the lines of 'winning is the ONLY way to have fun'. There are several ways to win, and some ways are more fun than others.

This thread reminds me of my time in UT. I was completely destroying people with the handgun Enforcer. Getting Gunslinger without fail and winning every game with ease.
Somehow people kept calling it cheap, and said I had no skill.

I still don't understand this. It takes me several shots with a slow handgun to kill them, while they can kill me with a single rocket or flak cannon shot.

I even consider glitching fair. It is in the game. The developers either chose to not test their game properly or considered it not important enough. If glitches ruin the game, then that means the game is bad because to win you need to do stupid glitches as per the game rules.
