Okay, so the other day me and a few mates were at my house for a party, and one of the other guys there was talking to us about a game that all of us loved and kenw practically everything about, so we were talking and telling him what we knew and asking for his opinion, but all the while he had a look on his face that just told you he was overwhelmed, i should say, and frankly he was
so then, afterwards, after a solid twenty minutes of talking, we decided to play the game and see how good he was at it, how he played, etc.
only after we started up the game and handed him the controller, he was lost horribly, and it became obvious that he didnt know shite about the game
so yeah, that pretty well soiled our good time, for all of three minutes...

so the point of all this is, have you ever met anyone like this? that pretends to know about some game/music/movie/etc. when they really dont? and if you have then what do you think of them?
[sup]discuss...[/sup]

EDIT: let me set something straight, for all of you who dont get exactly what i mean, im talking about people who really dont know a damn thing about something but act like they do
im not saying that just because someone doesnt know every little thing about something that they arent fans and it immediately deams them as "fake fans" until they go and fill their entire mind with nothing but said thing
NO, im just asking if people have met someone like this, that acts like they know a lot about something when they dont know anything at all(basically)

Not so much for games, but it's happened when I talk to some of my friends about music. They'll talk about a band and they'll say how much they love them but they only know two songs.

You can tell a "fake" fan, because they seem to know everything about a bands history, except for the lyrics to any of their songs.

Fake soccer fans are the funniest. Some know their entire team's history, but when a games on there'll always be an excuse, because they just don't wanna watch.

Funniest I've seen is this guy I know who's a Barcelona "fan", but knows very few of their players, pronounces the names of the one's he does know wrong, and, for some reason, keeps mixing Real Madrid up with AC Minal. I'm pretty sure he's never watched a game. Ever.

Not so much for gaming as most fans I've met are genuine.
There's a couple of people I know who are fake music fans (i.e. My Sister). They'll say they love a certain band based on hearing one or two songs and when you mention a slightly more obscure song, they'll just give you a blank look and try to argue their way out of it by saying you made it up...

Where I really see it a lot is in sport. Lots of "Glory Seekers" and "Fair Weather Fans" out there. Its those I hate the most, just supporting whichever team is doing well, particularly when I support teams that tend to suck.

I once walked up to an American who was wearing a David Beckham LA Galaxy strip. He happened to be discussing his love of David Beckham and his stats. So I asked him to explain the offside rule. From the dumb look he gave me, I thought his brain had exploded.

The offside rule! You cruel, cruel man.

Although yeah I hate it when people go for the glory, I especially hate it when people switch between two rival teams, thats like the worst thing you can do.

Lots of people I knwo come across like this. I don't know so many gamers though, and I actually really appreciate it when people try to learn about a game, so they can talk to me about it. I find that quite sweet.

Bands though, urgh. The XKCD comic where he says he sounds really knowledgable until people realise he's just talking about bands from Guitar Hero and Rock band? all the damn time.

I know a guy who thinks he's a hardcore 'metal head'(mostly because he owns Brutal Legend, idiot), and says that Ozzy Osborne is his favorite singer of all time. One day we were talking about music and I asked him to name 5 Ozzy songs. He replied "Well, you know, I don't really pay attention to the names."

I also hate Fallout fans who only like Fallout 3. Fucking embiciles.
Which is why I say I am a Fallout 3 fan until I get the willpower to play the other ones.

Sorry forgot to post a response. I also dislike the fake fans. My friend's the worst about absolutely everything, especially things girls say/do.

I seem to remember talking to someone about Final Fantasy after they said it was an "epic franshise".

I asked them which games they'd played and got the response:
"Ten and twelve. I haven't played the one's before them because they're old and look like shit, so they're probably not worth playing"

I suppose its sometimes to fit in, i can see that but not the best way to make friends. But when they're bull shitting to make themselves popular or the center of attention annoys me, but at the same time its brilliant to build them up and watch them fall >:D

How hard did you punch them in the face? They no longer have a nose, right?

I haven't met anyone like that in a very long time. Isn't this something only kids under 10 do to impress their playdates?

Pretty much this. There's no excuse for that, especially since they've re-released the originals in a ten dollar pack.
