Lots of people I knwo come across like this. I don't know so many gamers though, and I actually really appreciate it when people try to learn about a game, so they can talk to me about it. I find that quite sweet.

Bands though, urgh. The XKCD comic where he says he sounds really knowledgable until people realise he's just talking about bands from Guitar Hero and Rock band? all the damn time.

There you are.
Further proof that there is an xkcd comic for every situation.

I also hate Fallout fans who only like Fallout 3.
Pretty much this. There's no excuse for that, especially since they've re-released the originals in a ten dollar pack.
What if you own a game & still don't like it?
I'm guessing Fallout 2 is majorly awesome, but I'm never going to know because my dude can't fucking kill anything worse than a small radscorpion.
Start again, or keep killing radscorpions until you can kill other things.

I seem to remember talking to someone about Final Fantasy after they said it was an "epic franshise".

I asked them which games they'd played and got the response:
"Ten and twelve. I haven't played the one's before them because they're old and look like shit, so they're probably not worth playing"
How hard did you punch them in the face? They no longer have a nose, right?
I think a few people stood there looking at him in disbelief. Then he caught on and quickly added:
"Oh, but I've also played that one with the guy in the red coat with the three guns in one. That was a good one"

The topic swiftly went on to something else after that.

Okay, so the other day me and a few mates were at my house for a party, and one of the other guys there was talking to us about a game that all of us loved and kenw practically everything about, so we were talking and telling him what we knew and asking for his opinion, but all the while he had a look on his face that just told you he was overwhelmed, i should say, and frankly he was
so then, afterwards, after a solid twenty minutes of talking, we decided to play the game and see how good he was at it, how he played, etc.
only after we started up the game and handed him the controller, he was lost horribly, and it became obvious that he didnt know shite about the game
so yeah, that pretty well soiled our good time, for all of three minutes...

so the point of all this is, have you ever met anyone like this? that pretends to know about some game/music/movie/etc. when they really dont? and if you have then what do you think of them?
[sup]discuss...[/sup]
So you're saying you met a person that was possibly a fan of a game, just from a distance?

Yeah there are people like that, and that doesn't necessarily make them out to be a poser.

It's like that astronauts/astronomers speech I remember from Jurassic Park 3 (the very few things good about movie)

Oh and don't forget there are different levels of fandom. I use to think I was pretty Star Wars savvy until some guy tried to call me out as am "impostor," screeching it out like the pod people in the movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers when they detect a non pod person just because i misspelled midichlorians....0o

Self-proclaimed Final Fantasy "fans" that have never played a game prior to/after Final Fantasy VII annoy me to no end. Recognizing that VII was the game that got you into the series is fine and dandy, and actually somewhat common. From the point that one learns of the franchise's other games, though, neglecting to even try games I through VI or VIII through XII is just disgraceful.
Thank you! I was going to post something along these lines but you just put it better than I ever could. I would give you a cookie but I appear to be out of them...

Ah, It's so very, very wonderful that FFVIII was the first one I played and that I disliked it that time. Now I can say that both VII and VIII are my favorites and I don't have to take the "just because it was your first" argument for either.

Anyway, FFs from I to III are very far from what the series is about today. Even FFIV is pretty cliche ridden, engrish by today's standards. Just not aged very well, though with the remake that's probably not an valid excuse anymore, if you have a DS.

The fanbase is the most broken one I've ever seen anyway, though I have to admit that not even bothering to see what the older games are about... I believe the term "graphics whore" might have originated from old-school FF fans. Amusingly, many VII fans are using the term today. Not sure who that proves wrong.
But anyway, I'd say that a definition of a FF fan is someone who has plays each FF even if only to hate it completely. I mean, I clocked over 100 hours in XII. I think that kind of dedication to hating something makes you worthy of being called a fan of the game.

With a series this long, it's however also a bit natural that many fans haven't played every game. Some will lose intrest and some get into the series late. FF is very open to the latter thanks to there being only a few direct sequels.

EDIT:
Ditto Resident Evil. The series' appeal changed a lot in RE4. It's perfectly reasonable to start liking the series from there. The old-school fans can call themselves old-school fans... But what can RE4 and RE5 fans call themselves?
Again, I suppose it wouldn't be much to ask that they'd at least give chance to the old games, but what if they completely hate them? I don't think the older fans change their complaining a lot.

Coming into the series late is expected, and certainly isn't a crime with a series this long. I'm talking about the people who come in late, play one game and declare themselves "fans". You can't play one game out of a series of 12 (minus off-shoots and spin-offs) and call oneself a real fan of that series. It's like saying you're a Michael Jackson expert just because you bought the Anniversary Edition EP of Thriller off iTunes.

I agree with you, the older Final Fantasy games haven't aged all that well. I still think they're fun, personally, but they can't offer even a fraction of what today's RPGs can boast. Even so, a true fan of the series would make it their business to play them. Even if they don't enjoy them as much as the later games, it's about knowing and understanding the franchise's roots.

All the twats who support Manchester United that I know. Because we all live in London, you only like them because they are good, you have never been to a game, and you probably never will.

Ohhh! I hope you punished him. It's a bit depressing how much people rely on graphics for fun.

With all respect, it was TheSpoonyOne's fault I never played Final Fantasy VIII until just recently.

.. He was kinda right.

All the kids I've met these days claim to be Pokemon-fans.

And yet none of them know about any first generation Pokemon.

I'll kick their ass one day... I will.
