Actually, it wasn't Missingno. that rendered your game unplayable (although it did mess it up a little bit). I've caught one before, nothing really happened--nothing worse than the item duplication glitch.

The glitch Poke'mon M' will mess up your game if you catch it, however. It's not as common as Missingno., but I have seen it.
Oh wow, I completely forgot about M', you are right that's the one that messes it up. However missingno does do the graphics glitch.

In Final Fantasy Mystic Quest on the SNES, early in one of your friends gets infected with a deadly poison, and you have to get some elixir from a nearby temple to save her. When you get there, though, a treasure hunter guy has already taken it. At first he tries to sell it to you for 9000 GP (which is a lot in FFMQ, probably more than you need for the whole game). Since you can't afford it, he makes you go adventure with him in the Bone Dungeon to get it instead. At end of the dungeon, he finds the Dragon Claw, one of the best weapons in the game, and gives you the Elixir in exchange for that.

When I was like 10, someone told me that if you had enough money you could actually buy the Elixir, then go to Bone Dungeon by yourself and get the Dragon Claw way, way earlier than you should have it. I spent a whole week grinding money off the early-game monsters at 2 GP per monster, only to find out it was fake :(

...In San Andreas there was the myths saying to have seen Bigfoot, animals, aliens, UFO's, Pigsy from Manhunt, and the Man In Black from Dark Tower (This was the only true one)...
The UFO myths are partially because you could sometimes see the effects of a plane flying (lights and such) from beyond the draw distance where the plane itself will be visible. Plus, Area 51 is in the game.

The bigfoot thing was told to me by my somewhat gullible brother, so I took it with a grain or two of salt, but in the interest of not having to load if I got torn limb from limb by an unexpected ape going... well... apeshit... I kept my shotgun out and loaded with plenty of ammo when on foot in the forest until I was able to confirm that it was a myth (a few days later, IIRC). I was unsurprised by this, but disappointed I didn't get to gun down bigfoot. But in a game where you steal a jetpack from area 51 and a harrier from a USMC amphibious assault carrier, and do an airborne assault on a rapper's mansion, this isn't a huge loss, there's plenty of craziness to be had.

My brother told me in gta San Andreas, that if you fly south east in the ocean for 20 minutes you can travel to vice city. I still believed him even after 20 minutes.
That Sky-City, whichever game had it, was true though; at least my friend Austin said he made it, and he's trustworthy enough (what would he have to gain or to lose by telling me, someone not so into GTA games, who doesn't own that copy of the game)

There were ways to get strange coloured pokeon in Gold and Silver though, they were called "shiny" pokemon I think. Aside from the red Gyrados, I got a Golduck that was apparently a different colour too in the woods before Goldenrod city (the one with the radio station). I didn't know what colour it was because I didn't have a Gameboy colour :(.
I believe it'll be light blue.
EVERY Pokémon had a shiny colour. You just had a tiny tiny chance of finding one - something like 1 in 162,000?

Apart from Red Gyarados anyway.
And yes, Charizard was black.

or 100 hours in Red/Blue version would bring back the SS Anne. Actually, did that happen? I never actually stuck around to find out.
I was told the same rumor long ago. I was told 100 hours AFTER the SS Anne departed, and that you could use it to reach the truck to get Mew.

I went through several batteries to find out that it never comes back :(

You can get to the cake in Portal.
And you could beat the Marathon Man in Loz:OoT by taking a certain route, etc.
And pretty much all the Pokemon ones. (I love that people still remember Maril as Pikuablu! xD) Actually, one of them turned out to be turn: you could "clone" Pokemon in the old games by taking advantage of a glitch or something.
