Our comrade professor forgot one small detail...the US State governments already maintain a healthy amount of self-rule. In practice, the federal government is only as powerful as the states' willingness to cooperate with it.
Or perhaps the professor never heard of the first Civil War? Because if he had he would already have known why this is.
America is coming apart at the seams, but not in the same manner as it did before, where a significant portion of the population separated into two mutually-exclusive groups. I still believe that the "nationalism craze" finally started to die out in our country during the 70s.
If America does break apart, it will be due to outside influence within the private sector*; certainly NOT through civil war.
(*which in turn, holds a considerable chunk of power in congress through committees and special interest groups; this is why I advocate sacking all of the incumbent politicians and put some people who aren't fucking lawyers and business administrators in the representatives seats.)
