Our comrade professor forgot one small detail...the US State governments already maintain a healthy amount of self-rule. In practice, the federal government is only as powerful as the states' willingness to cooperate with it.

Or perhaps the professor never heard of the first Civil War? Because if he had he would already have known why this is.

America is coming apart at the seams, but not in the same manner as it did before, where a significant portion of the population separated into two mutually-exclusive groups. I still believe that the "nationalism craze" finally started to die out in our country during the 70s.
If America does break apart, it will be due to outside influence within the private sector*; certainly NOT through civil war.

(*which in turn, holds a considerable chunk of power in congress through committees and special interest groups; this is why I advocate sacking all of the incumbent politicians and put some people who aren't fucking lawyers and business administrators in the representatives seats.)

History repeats itself.
The Roman Empire collapsed.
Same thing might happen to the USA.
It all depends on the people and those in charge.

It's a pretty crappy situation. If I remember correctly isn't the Right basicly just going to filibuster anything Obama tries to do, and when the other side is in power the left does the same thing? (It was a Time article, not sure which issue.)
Remember Bush? If we'd been LUCKY, the Democrats would've fillibustered the GOP's dumber ideas. Instead they rolled over and rubber-stamped a lot of terrible policies.

That's how "bipartisanship" works these days:
When the Democrats have a majority, they have to do what the Republicans want.
When the Democrats have a minority...they have to do what the Republicans want. :p
You know that 57 Senate seats are held by Democrats and 2 by independents, right? If it was really a case of right wing filibustering and nothing more, then they should only need one vote from the right to get anything done. But the fact of the matter is that neither side likes what's being done in any case.

America's feckin hearty, but it'll be hit hard when we run out of oil.

It isn't exactly the only one in that boat.

Not by 2010, but eventually something will happen and China will overtake it. It is inevitable with all countries really, different ones rise and fall over time.

So while browsing another forum, I came across this [http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123051100709638419.html] basically predicts the United States would break apart by the end of 2010.

Personally, I do not believe this for two reasons:

Less serious 1: We're too lazy to break apart. Would be too much effort for us.

More serious 2: Yes, we have internal problems, but not enough to "break apart".

It should also be noted this was predicted by a Russian. So yah. Take it as you will.
That's two years old...

Regardless, not much will occur from this because

1) His agenda is pure Russian
2) Secret data is probably pulled from his nether region
3) KGB. Nuff said.
While it may be two years old, he states the end of U.S. will occur this year, so it seems relevant enough.

agree

Haha, a Russian wrote this? Russia is so much closer to internal collapse than the US. 9/11 showed us that we may have varying opinions and beliefs but we still are a very unified nation.
Why do I get the impression that you think Russians are stupid?
No, I don't think Russians are stupid. I think their leaders are rash and I'm still a bit peeved about their attacks against Georgia and their prior massacre of the Ukrainian people (I have a Ukrainian friend).

Personally I feel it's far more likely the UK will break apart by the end of this year. I really don't like this country

Perhaps this gives him greater insight into the signs of collapse? Your comment just shows how not ready America is to join the rest of the world, and how unaware most Americans are of their surroundings.
Wait, what? How is America not part of the world now? That makes no sense to say that the sole superpower is not part of the world. If I were a true "American fiend" (probably what you believe about American citizens, at least taken from the context of your post), I would claim Europe isn't part of the world, nor is Africa, or Asia, or South America, or Australia. Please consider what you are saying before making false assertions.

No offense, but have you not heard of the Cold War or the current issues the US has with Russia? Obviously not. If you had, you would see the bias in his words. Perhaps you are not ready "to join the rest of the world" if you haven't even seen this.

Id like to point out "more hate mail" if you dont want more hate mail stop posting things that you know will provoke people = no more hate mail = problem solved = stop whining about something with a simple solution.

OR you could carry on posting things that you know will make people retaliate, complain about them and then defend your self with a "I can say what I want". Then slowly but surely, as the hate mail piles up higher and higher, up until the point where deleting it is nolonger an option. and as the hate piles up, the selfloathing begins and you start to fall into a dark pit of despair, wishing it could all be reversed. Calling out across the cold black threshhold of your own mortality is a voice: "Kill me" "KILL ME" it repeats you try to block it out, its no use "kill me, kill me" the words wrapped around in your contiousness like a serpent. You pick up a large blunt object, thrust it towards your skull, AND BAM!

You wake up, unharmed, at your computer. Theres an unposted comment on screen, you must have fallen asleep while typing. You look closey at the words sprawwled across the internet browser and notice that the sentence might offend some thus provking more hate mail. You delete it and retype a new comment, less likely to cause disaproval.

When you return the following day, you notice something. 32 new messages, upon reading them, you notice they are not of the usual hate spam, but of love and affection, you smile slightly.
The end
(this is a joke as i am very bored and tired)

Well we can live without Texas.
Pffffff, yeah, right.

In the scenario in which any foreign power invades the continental U.S., Texas will be leading the rebellion, since everybody and their dog has enough guns to shame the military.

This is actually the lightest message I've received. But no I will never stop posting It's not my fault I have a different opinion then most the escapist, people should learn to be more tolerant.

Hm. Well that is interesting.

Still, we'll know whether he's bullshitting or not in a few weeks. Although it's only a "45-55%" chance, so meh.

There is nothing better for patriotism then a big disaster like that happening, it makes the people scared and more likely to follow the goverment whatever they plan on doing. If anything patriotism went up 1000% after 9/11, united against any perceived threats (you even had a go at the french at one point for not supporting your war, renaming french fries, etc).

Otherwise im not american, so have no clue, but im under the impression UK is far more likely to be broken up then USA, scots want to break off and if they succeed, wales and northern ireland might get similar ideas.
I think it will happen and it will be the same as the Soviet Union (let me explain lol)

the biggest country (russia) inherited all the political power of the SU, while the smaller countries (kurdistan, estonia, georgia) were left by the political wayside and fell into the political and economic blackhole

England will inherit all the political power and influence that the UK holds right now, and Scotland (I think the only one who I think will take devolution) will vanish into political/economic obscurity ala estonia and other eastern bloc states
