Where do you get you're knowledge of gunplay from, cos it sounds like movies. Guns are a lot harder to hit shit with than you think, even at close range.
True, I've never fired an actual gun, but lets take a BB gun for example (which was also featured in fallout 3). If I stand 5 metres away and aim a bb gun at someone's body with ironsights I hit them, hopup or not (eventhough I'm not very skilled or anything). If I stand 5 metres away in Fallout 3 and aim my bb gun at someone's body (with low small guns skill) and I fire, I have like 40% chance for the BB to miss. How this would be realistic I have no idea.

I assume firing guns is actually more predictable than firing BB guns (judging by velocity, room in barrel and general aerodynamics) so lining up ironsights with person on body from 5 metres should be viable enough even when its the first time I'm firing a gun, am I right??

Hence the VATS statistics getting significantly higher the closer you are to your target.
This has nothing to do with what I said.. Besides I was complaining about actual gunplay, not the overpowered VATS system..

Its an okay game but the gunplay really sucked..
No, it was just more realistic than most noone can hold a gun truely steady or rotate as fast as in most FPSs
Realism doesn't include dicerolls whenever you point a gun and hold the trigger..
That's an attempt to simulate how unpredictable a gun is.
But it shouldn't be to this extent, sure a cone of fire is okay and it is very realistic as well. Aiming for a full bodyshot from 5 metres with low 'small weapons' skill and MISSING is not very realistic though...
Hence the VATS statistics getting significantly higher the closer you are to your target.
And if you don't use vats since its broken it still sucks......still its not a bad melting pot of a game...even if its more shallow than it needs to be...

Last I checked Fo3 has no dice rolls on hit just damage and everything dose minimal damage verse's the armor/prek/whatever of the target.

I don't own it, don't plan to. I played the first two fallout games and fallout tactics more than was probably healthy. I'm not sure if I can bring myself to deal with the changes that Bethesda made. But its not like I'm lacking for games to play anyways. I might try it once my friends get finished with them and borrow it for a bit just to see, but I'm probably not going to buy unless it makes it to the value bin.

Yeah, I own it. I just bought the Collector's Edition for 360 actually for $47 (thanks to a sale on Amazon). I then sold my regular edition for $40.

I got it and I love it! Its simple to mod and although the original combat is lame, my Fallout 3 Reborn mod fixed that. Its very modable.

I did own it but sold it. For some reason I couldn't get myself to beat it a second time
After my first playthrough, I couldn't either. However, I've had a few months off of the game and just recently got back into it.

The time off helped because it all feels fresh and new again, well, as fresh and new as an irradiated wasteland can feel.

I own it. It's fun.

It's weird how sometimes game will come out that seem to transcend gaming. People you would have never imagined picking up a control are playing the same game you are. I don't really know what type of game does this... though I certainly know JRPGs never get this kind of attention.

No it's not. It's to make more of the stats meaningful. It doesn't matter. VATS made it less of an FPS, and more of a turn-based RPG, just like the first two, except with the ability to strafe and fire will you're waiting for you action points to fill up again. Either you like it or you don't. Also, what made you think that his complaint was the realism?

Yes, and I've lost countless hours of sleep due to it. I'm not too surprised that you've heard "non-gamers" talking about it as has become very popular very quickly as it is a game that can be instantly picked up and played (and put down again - should you want to) no matter how into games you are.

I think I'm starting to get withdrawal symptoms... need... to... play... Fallout 3...
