But then how did anyone ever find out (at the ivention of swimming technique) to learn it? they would be tought by someone! Maybe someone in the vault had passed-down knowledge that they give to the player? Cuz not many people would learn to swim from a book. The same person maybe also taught him how to swim with quintuple his body weight in equipment too.
When most babies are born they can swim but then we loose it along the way and have to relearn it.
I remmber reading in the manual that came with the game(yes I actually read those things) about how it seemed to come off as a vault guide on how to surrvive in the outside. It talked about traps, food, people interactions, radiation and all that. Maybe if the vault residences had to read said book for school or what not. And if your not happy with that then his dad taught him just incase.
Three thoughts on this one.

I doubt that. Your survival instinct isn't big enough to instantly learn something unnatural like swimming. While it's natural for a baby to be able to swim at birth, this ability gets put away and has to be relearned at older age when not maintained.skcseth said:
Good question. Maybe that could explain why he/she cant hold their breath for more than a few seconds. Ive died by drowning while trying to get to Pinkerton more times than I care to admit and almost died leaving the sub in Point Lookout (was trying to be close enough to watch it explode).

Well there were some inaccessable areas of the Vault 101, so maybe there is a swimming area. And in the G.O.A.T exam it mentions the Vault having a baseball league and the vault does have baseball equipment lieing around, so maybe theres a sports room aswell?
