In my opinion, weapon degradation in fallout3 is worse than that in Oblivion and far more annoying. Immersion is certainly better than Oblivion's, but that's not saying much. The dialogue in Fallout 3 is also pretty bad, at least when compared to the previous Fallout games. If you disliked Oblivion for the dialogue the you will probably hate Fallout 3.

I enjoyed Fallout 3, but I don't know if you will. Take all of the game's flaws and strengths into account and then decide if it will appeal to you.

I hated Oblivion but love Fallout 3. Weapons are easy to fix, there's no fatigue gauge to slow you down (just an AP gauge for VATS and VATS only). Weapons are easy to fix, find the same gun and hit R on it and merge the two together and you'll have recovered a good amount. Most guns have good durability and will last a while, in anycase you'll have more than one gun with you I'm sure so guns wearing out is a bit more rare.

It sounds better than Oblivion and I think I'll quite like it as long as the item decay isn't as bad as in Oblivion. I guess that's the main thing I'm asking ^^;
The amount of weapon degradation depends on your character build and progress in the game. If your character is melee focused, then you will naturally take more damage and as a result your armor will degrade faster. If your a ranged fighter your armor won't degrade as fast, but certain ranged weapon have fast degradation.

Also, you repair weapons with another weapon that is the same or similar. How well you can repair the weapon/armor depends on your repair skill and the quality of the item you are repairing it with. Certain weapons/armor are a pain to find depending on your progress in the game, so repairing them will be annoying and troublesome.

So the system can either be a minor annoyance or an incredible pain.

I didn't hate Oblivion too much... I never got that far into the game to be honest so it might have gotten better as it progressed. I never got past the second Oblivion gate. But yeah, thanks for the comments. I think I'll borrow it from one of my friends to see what it's like first.

I hate Oblivion, honestly. I don't know what it is about the game I don't like... I just can't really stand it.

I do LOVE FO3 though. It's great. Places, people, things... I love it all... that's just me though.

Maybe it is the fact that when you level up in Oblivion, every single monster levels up too that pisses me off. I hate suffering through a level, going and grinding for six levels at some other part of the world, returning, and finding that the monsters are just as hard as when you left. I love beating ass on the return trip. Oblivion doesn't allow that though. Everything is fair. Always.

I didnt enjoy Oblivion as much as I do Fallout 3.
Only played Oblivion for about a day but have replayed Fallout 3.

Ive ranted before here why and whatnot, ill just say it is possable to enjoy Fallout 3 if you didn't like Oblivion. (Combat was mostly my issue with Oblivion, not a problem at all in Fallout 3, kills are beautifully satisfying.)

I hate to say it but Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns, to a certain degree.

In oblivion the item decay mechanic was an annoyance; a gold tax designed to force you to visit a town every so often. In Fallout 3 the repair mechanic is the chief way you increase your weapon damage.

Basically in Fallout 3 you *need* the repair skill. Unlike Oblivion where you need repair hammers, in Fallout 3 you can just repair any item with any other item of the same type. So after you kill all the raiders, you scavenge all their guns and use them to repair your own. If you don't like scavenging for stuff, Fallout 3 probably isn't for you.

The neat thing about Fallout 3's system is a high repair skill equals high damage weapon. I could be wrong but I believe the damage output between a low condition and high condition weapon is around 100% (so the high condition weapon is twice as effective). There are no repairmen in the game who can repair stuff this well for you so you have to do it yourself.

While my wife & I liked both Fallout and Oblivion, I do have quite a few friends who didn't like Oblivion at all but loved Fallout3. Many of them had problems with the combat, which improved immensely, and the convoluted leveling up system, which was simplified and made more rewarding.

When it comes to customization, it's a little bit better than Oblivion. Like Oblivion, you get a wide array of skills but you also have special abilities; amongst the array you'll find there are some that are useful and others that aren't.

The game isn't quite as big as Oblivion (there isn't quite as much to buy/do) but Oblivion takes a while before it draws you in while Fallout 3 will snag you after your first couple of quests. Still, you might have to give it more than a day but definitely borrow it from a friend and do the Wasteland Survival Guide quest: it's a long one but it gives you a good cross section of things to do and can be very rewarding.

Fallout 3 is basically a sequel to Oblivion, and immersion isn't a problem at all. Good and evil are also not extremes, as you can be in the middle or slightly to one side and there are pros/cons to it. You do have to choose a weapon or two to use exclusively since your ammo and spare guns to use for repairs use up space, and since ammo sells really well it benefits you to use as narrow a range of weapons as possible.

I really do feel it's the best game I ever played.

Fallout 3 is just like Oblivion - Shit.

There are so many better RPG's out there, and if you want a real Fallout experience, play the first.
Fallout 3 is a real Oblivion experience in a Fallout world. Fallout 1 & 2 are very good games, Fallout 3 isn't the same, but I still enjoy messing around with people and being as big a dick as possible. I guess it's just all in what you like. Fallout to me is more like a FPS or an action game than an RPG. It more has the elements of RPGs in an open-world FPS. Fallout does get dull after you beat the campaign, but the rather unusually frequent DLC keeps it interesting. I recommend it, I guess.

I'm certainly no power gamer but I found Fallout 3 much too easy. I never considered the difficulty of the originals, it wasn't relevant to my experience with them.

I've come to terms with that comparing Fallout 3 to number 1 and 2 is somewhat ridiculous, they're not even in the same genre. I absolutely hated Fallout 3 until I came to terms with that, expecting more of the wonders and humour of the previous titles. The comparisons seem impossible to avoid though.

After a few failed attempts to play it, I managed to get into it, after having switched from the Xbox to the PC.

Fallout 3 is more of an expose of graphics, little or no physics and rather uninteresting, run-of-the-mill characters. It has a very 90s FPS feel to it, IMO. After a couple of hours in the wasteland I had excellent combat armour, a minigun with loads and loads and loads of ammo, some assault rifles, cartons of grenades and more cash than I could spend in the areas I had discovered. From there on I didn't once worry about ammo or item degradation. Stuff just came in droves.

The story really doesn't fit the Fallout universe. Like Yahtzee has pointed out, sticking a sign over some character's head reading "sympathize with this guy" won't cut it. Especially not in the Wasteland, where sympathy comes in short supply. I never cared one bit about the story. It had none of the quirky, at times stupid, weirdness of the originals.

I've played through the originals with every character I could think of, done every quest and seen all the endings. After one time through number 3, I'm very unlikely to ever play it again.

It's good because it's Fallout. It's bad because ... well, IMO it's a bad game.

Fallout 3 is decent. The gameplay was alright, not extremely fun but not bad either. If you like RPGs, get it. The ending sucks total balls though.

Well, being that Fallout 3 is pretty much the official game of the Escapist, you aren't going to hear much bad things about it. If you didn't like decaying in Oblivion, it's pretty much the same story in Fallout 3, but you use other weapons instead of a hammer.

I didn't like Oblivion all too much. Fallout, while you you will get that sense of similarity, is a whole different experience in the long run. =]

Fallout's great if you like guns and free roaming, but god damn weapon degradation gets on my nerves.

I wont bother reading all the other comments, so here is my words for you;
I love Fallout 3 to bits, but at the same time, I did not like Oblivion, even though its not bad. This is becuse I am a person who demands creativity and exploration in a game, also I am quiet the scavenger in Fallout, I love going through every inch of a building, looking for things, which helped me keep my interest up. The storyline and RPG elements of Fallout 3 also helped me keep my interest up, but this is becuse I am an RPG geek and an artist. If you like this game or not is from my point of view, depending on what you like in a game. This game is perfect for me, since I search up things to do in the game, and dont like them slapped right into my face, and I can shoot stuff, also I can pick the outfit for my character. The skills are also excellent, but you have to decide which way you want to play the game before placing them out. I always choose my skills in this order;
Small Guns>Lockpicking>Sneaking>Repairing>Speech.
I like to say I played the assasin way of the game. You have alot of choices, but it can be difficult to really know what to go for in the beginning.

In short this game was good for me personally, you simply have to try it and see if it fits your gaming style. But if you ask me, I say buy it, becuse I think its excellent.
