Next Elder scrolls game will be an MMO, so I'd expect a rather different game engine.
Do you have a citation for that?

If it's true, which I doubt, that would be the end of TES as we know it. You can't really share sandboxes effectively. The whole point of Bethesda's games is that it's you all alone up against a huge world. Once you add multiplayer, you lose that sense of wonder everyone gets when they step out of the prison sewers/Vault entrance/Customs and Excise building.
There's some other post with a link floating about which lead me to believe this was correct; I admit that as a citation makes wikipedia look like the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Its also the reason (if true) that I will not be purchasing the game.

I say Bethesda needs to finally fix the damned gamebryo engine.
It was unstable in Oblivion, it was unstable in Fallout, and it'll probably be unstable in TES V.

But instablity is what Bethesda games are all about!

New engine or Morrowind style gameplay seems to be the general gist here.

Personally I would be all for making Oblivion again with next generation effects, a larger (and generally more enthralling) area to explore and more diverse spells.

Of course we all hope that the new <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/97607-Court-Documents-Show-Secret-Elder-Scrolls-MMOG-Underway>Elder Scrolls MMO won't get in the way of TES: V. In fact, given Bethesda's stance that they prefer to create quality single player instead of mediocre multiplayer, we can be fairly certain that TES:V will come out. The MMO seems to be happening though, so it's really a question of whether or not one will come at expense to the other.

Oh, and antoher thing: if we can include Fallout 3 in the Bethesda game evolution chart at all, then the trend with the games seems to be for them to become simpler, more linear and shorter. Roughly:
Morrowind>Oblivion>Fallout 3.
A worrying trend.
I think Oblivion managed sandbox exploration and RPG gameplay well, but if the next TES game were to be even simpler and more linear (and shorter) than Fallout 3, then I think I might cry.

All I really want is a new ES game. They could take the same Oblivion engine and add missions where I had to go pick roses and try not to be pricked by the thorns and I'd be a good little fanboy for the next two years until I started complaining that Fallout 4 should be out by now.

It's not true.

As I've said before (today actually, just a few hours ago) all I really want from Fallout 3 is the gore. In Oblivion, it just didn't feel right for me when my Ork one-hit killed a mage with a power strike from his battle axe, and all that would happen is the mage would fly a few feet and not even wrinkle his robes. Maybe I'm just a little disturbed, but it just felt a little...off. Especially with all the other gore in some of the dungeons. I mean, if your going to scatter some rotting body parts around an old castle, you should at least have them actually come off people. As for the graphics, I think they can stay the same from Fallout. I don't think we ever saw their full extent in that game, what with the lack of vegetation and all.

Well, seeing as how TES5 won't actually be; TES5 - It's going to be a sort of RPG with online play set in Tamriel. Not a lot of info has been released on it; but we can speculate that they will do a good job. Bethesda earned my absolute fandom with Oblivion, then when I played Morrowind that fandom doubled. Let's just hope that TES5 won't be a flop - that would leave a horrible mark on the currently spotless reign of the Elder Scrolls series being one of the best RPG series made.

BTW - Has anyone ever played Arena? The first elder scrolls game? It's VERY well put together. It has that old Gamplay > Graphics style to it. And the graphics are DOS style 8-bit (but they're awesome 8-bit graphics :p); and I find them to be very easy on the eye's, and pretty addicting too!

Anyways, I prefer Oblivion over Fallout 3 because Fallout 3 just didn't have that certain feel to it that Oblivion had. And I don't mean I didn't like it because it wasn't an Oblivion with Guns - I mean fallout 3 felt just too empty; the game-world didn't really seem to be 'alive'. And I know what your thinking 'It's a nuclear apocalypse; of course it's not alive'. I just mean, there doesn't seem to be enough activity in it - it seems like one of those games that's good and fun to play; but just doesn't have that "special touch".

Both are VERY good games though.

Keep the hitting and spellcasting of Oblivion, but everything else can be like Morrowind (aside from the graphics obviously).
True. I really felt that the hitting in Morrowind sucked.
Didn't you feel that (even disregarding Fast Travel) that it took far too long to get anywhere in Morrowind? Of course it could just be that I didn't find the gameworld interesting enough and/or couldn't get past the graphics when I finally got around to playing it.

The obvious lack of levitation magic was pretty lame, as was their 'lore' excuse for it... yeah, levitation is forbidden in the capital district... Why don't you just throw in the retarded judges from Final fantasy tactics advance and astound us with your stupidity.
That was their excuse? Forbidden? LOL, so is necromancy, and that's why there are no necromancers in Cyrodiil necromancers hiding in just about every cave on the continent.
If you wanna get technical, they say that there is some sort of special 'field' around tamriel that prevents levitation magic from working... Which doesn't explain why you can't use it on the plane of oblivion, but then again, you can't even learn the damn spell. It was something that was nessesary in certain parts of Morrowind, but I can see how it can 'break' the game in certain dungeons. Also it would make it so you can just levitate up the mountains instead of having to see them as horrible obstacles that frustrate you every time you have to reach a cave halfway up and the slope is >just< steep enough that you can't just walk up.

Wow. Where are you getting all this? I assume it's official, so why couldn't they come up with an explanation that doesn't raise any more questions? It's probably best not to ask.

I found a good levitation mod though, so I don't mind the mountains so much.

While I'm on the subject, more things that need to be kept from Oblivion:
- Separate clothing pieces, since Fallout 3's one piece outfits were a terrible blow to character customisation.
- Modability. This. Has. To. Stay. Although since it was still in Fallout, it's all but certain it will feature in the next Elder Scrolls instalment.

Maybe being able to play as a dwarf would be a nice addition too? [small]Please don't attack me with your lore...[/small]

Tradition was to build an entirely new engine for subsequent TES games.
This for sure, there's no way they're going to use the same engine they did in oblivion. If they do it's probably going to be so heavily modified it would be considered a new engine anyways.

They'll probably make a new engine, though I'm slightly doubtful of this as TES V will need to run [most likely] on current gen Consoles, as Bethesda seem determined to keep developing multi-platform games now.

Though, I honestly don't care, I'd prefer a new engine, Fallout 3 didn't look overly great on highest settings (on PC) - especially the rock model/texture, it looked copied exactly from Oblivion, I wanted to cry when I saw that.

Fallout 3 used an updated Oblivion engine so TES V will no doubt simply use a more updated version of the Fallout 3 one, no point creating one ground up.

I also heard in a pod cast with Todd Howard from Bethesda that they will be improving animation as one of their aims when they upgrade the engine.

I hope the new ES uses perks though, it would be cool to see them in that series as well as Fallout.
